Summoning The Thrill-less: The Djinn (2021) - Reviewed

Posted By themoviesleuth 1102 days ago on Entertainment

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - By now, most of us are familiar with the myth of the wish-granting genie: Find a magic lamp, rub the side of it and out pops a smoky creature who will make your dreams come true. Popularized by stories like Disney’s Aladdin and Sidney Sheldon’s I Dream of Jeannie, these whimsical apparitions we have come to love have their origins in the much darker tales of the djinn.Although the exact origin of the djinn is unknown, myths surrounding these supernatural creatures date back to pre-Islamic Arabia. Tales of their characteristics vary from benevolent beings capable of great magic, to evil shape-shifters who can possess the vulnerable and steal children. Islamic era scholars have described the djinn as beings made of a smokeless fire, created by God himself, eventually cast out and forced to

Mondo Macabro: Hunting Ground (1983) - Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - “The day I come to believe the world is just a hunting ground, life will lose all meaning for me.”Jorge Grau’s Hunting Ground is a nasty bit of nihilism that combines a crime thriller with a home invasion film. While most of the film is played fairly straightforward, the third act plunges headfirst into exploitation territory with some truly heinous acts depicted in their full glory. The tale follows Adele (Assumpta Serna), a defense lawyer who has a very analytical and logical view on crime and criminals. In her mind, many criminals are victims of their poor environments and lack of money and upbringing, and she fights for them to get lighter sentences with a chance for rehabilitation. While the points she brings up are excellent (and in real life are backed up with research and stu

The Softest of Lights in the Darkest Abyss: Annette (2021) Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  There is a lot to unpack in the allegory of Annette, a collaborative effort between director Leos Carax and the band Sparks, whose music breathes through the film as a living entity and whose screenplay infuses the narrative with metatextual, Nietzschean philosophical concepts and emotional metaphors. Framed as a voyeuristic fantasy, Annette tells the story of the forces of both internal and external angst, driving egotistical male rage as it stuffs the already-overflowing celebrity skin with hubris and empty cruelties. As its characters descend into a madness that chains them to the blackest depths of the abyss – an abyss that stares back into them, as much from the real-world theatre as it does their own metaphysical realities – we are witness to the deterioration of personhood as

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - photo courtesy WB The U.S. domestic box office showed signs this weekend in the form of two mega-monsters. The film from Warner Bros. and director Adam Wingard has gone on to gross the biggest opening weekend since the beginning of the global pandemic. As people get a little more comfortable heading back out into the public, theaters are finally seeing some lifeblood flow in the form of ticket sales. The long awaited dual between Godzilla and Kong ended up bringing in roughly $48 million over the extended Easter weekend which means the summer blockbuster season may start to heat up. This is also a good sign that the dual streaming and theatrical openings are actually working. While it's not nearly what the movie would have done during normal times, it's definitely a step in the right

One Re-Release To Rule Them All: Lord of the Rings Remastered Trilogy In IMAX Tomorrow

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  With theaters still hurting from the pandemic, re-releases of big budget movies seem to continue drumming up interest. It's been announced that the Lord of the Rings trilogy remaster will be in IMAX cinemas beginning tomorrow. The Peter Jackson film trilogy went on to earn nearly $3 billion in its theatrical run and will now get another proper cinematic jaunt as it hits most major theater chains beginning on Friday, February 5th 2021. Considering there are no big studio releases this weekend, this could prove to be a success with no other real competition. After this trilogy garnered such massive successes, Jackson went on to a three movie arc around The Hobbit. Amazon is currently working on their very own Lord of the Rings television series that is said to have a massive budg

Resident Evil: New Movie Title Revealed and Plot Details Announced

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  Not too long ago a new Resident Evil movie and television series were announced. When the pandemic broke out, things went awfully silent for a while. Well it looks like we're finally starting to get more details about the brand new RE movie as horror director Johannes Roberts is finally breaking his silence about his movie. His previous works include the two 47 Meters down shark attack movies and the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night. He's moved on to bigger things by taking on the Resident Evil franchise and will hopefully continue on with more sequels. Just yesterday it was announced that the new film will be called Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City. It's been said that this will play much more closely to the source material. Roberts revealed at SXSW that this will be

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - Stop me if you think you've heard this one before..... This spring’s release of Shoplifters Of The World drops on streaming this weekend after several delays amid a global pandemic that’s seen the indie film world struggle to cope. This tongue in cheek copycat of Airheads (1994) is a disappointing effort that won’t even satisfy die hard Smiths fans like myself. Instead, the movie is a ninety minute affair in the purest of annoyances. The dialogue is not natural and stilted. Characters are one sided caricatures of routinely standard ‘80s tropes, personal sexuality is assaulted by terrible cliches and branding, all the while attempting to cash in on current retro trends.Paired with awful acting and writing all around, the only saving grace is the soundtrack by The Smiths, whi

King Kong (1976) Scream Factory Extras Revealed: 2k Restoration of the Extended Cut and More

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  Courtesy: Scream Factory1976's King Kong has enjoyed quite the critical re-evaluation in recent years, and deservedly so. For a long time its sole cultural legacy was that of a notorious Hollywood flop that almost ended Jessica Lange's career before it started, and stood alongside Dune as proof for many that producer Dino De Laurentiis could not be trusted to successfully helm a Hollywood blockbuster. But in recent years, the internet discourse around De Laurentiis's Kong has changed significantly, as people have revisited the film for the first time in years and had the collective reaction, "hey, wait a second, this is actually pretty good!" That was certainly my experience when I watched it in the early days of social distancing about a year ago.Courtesy: ParamountTo be clear, it
