King Massinissa (r. 206-202 BC) of Numidia unified and lead a federation of Massylii Berber tribes during the Second Punic War, making Cirta, now Constantine, its capital.
In 25 BC, Numidia became a Roman vassal. The former kingdom was split, transferring Berber King Juba II (r. 30-23 BC) to the neighboring kingdom of Mauretania.
