He ruled the Eastern Empire, appointing Maximian (r. 286-305 BC) as co-emperor in the West and was succeeded by Galerius (r. 305-311 BC).

Galerius was the father of Valeria Maximilla and Candidianus.


His wife, Galeria Valeria, was the daughter of Diocletian and Prisca.

Galerius was succeeded by Constantius I (r. 305-306 BC), who was then succeeded by Severus II (r. 306-307 BC).
