Television: Resident Alien Ep. 1 (2021) - Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  Alan Tudyk has long been a favorite actor of mine. Like many of my peers, I came to know him as Wash on the TV series Firefly and its sequel film Serenity. My first exposure to just what a chameleon he could be, however, was in an underrated Sandra Bullock movie, 28 Days, wherein he plays an addict who brings some much-needed humor to an otherwise serious movie. Over the years, he’s played comedic characters as well as delightfully sinister villains, and his new show, Resident Alien, happily allows him to blend the funny with the menace quite nicely. Tudyk plays an alien, Captain Hah Re, who crash-lands in a small, isolated Colorado town during a snowstorm. After meeting and supposedly killing Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, Hah Re assumes Harry’s identity and spends four months isola

You've had a long history of stunt work prior to doing straight acting. How did you get involved in the world of stunts?ZB: So I got into gymnastics. Then I got into martial arts. It was through martial arts where I met people. I would stay behind and watch black belts train. And I met people that got paid to fight and flip, aka stunt people. I just always thought they were interesting. Like Evil Knievel. When I found ou

A Girl's Guide to Turning 50

Posted By LaurelLit 1755 days ago on Writing

http://laurellit.com - First, a disclaimer: I realize using the word “girl” in regards to turning 50 is both inaccurate and a bit diminishing. I am a woman and I should be proud of my wisdom, sophistication, and life experience. I am proud. However, using “girl” in regards to my 50th birthday slaps a bit of youthfulness onto the occasion, and if I can’t be young anymore, I can at least feel youthful. So, how do I celebrate turning 50? I’ll be honest; I’d really rather no [...]

Cult Cinema: Lighthouse [Dead of Night](1999) - Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - Despite having worked recently on the aging drama Edie back in 2017, you probably haven’t heard of British writer-director Simon Hunter.  Though only having two other feature film projects to his name including Mutant Chronicles, the filmmaker struck out on his own in 1999 with the largely forgotten Cornwall set gothic slasher Lighthouse or Dead of Night depending on the territory.  An ensemble survival horror thriller which came years before Robert Eggers’ mystifying horror film of the same name, Lighthouse is that rare overlooked debut which doesn’t reinvent the wheel but offers up a lush gothic horror tale in one of the most remote settings for a horror film that isn’t within the arctic.    A simple an

Dear Jake Tapper: What do you Know About Teachers' Feelings?

Posted By LaurelLit 1756 days ago on Writing

http://laurellit.com - Dear Jake Tapper,I feel betrayed. I tweeted but you didn’t respond. Rarely do I have time to watch your show, but I’d worked ahead on my lesson plans and grading, so I could finish early to make a birthday cake for my son. I had on "The Beat" while I was in the kitchen, and you did this segment about “Do Teachers Need to be Vaccinated for Schools to Safely Reopen?” Dr. Paul Offit was your guest, and you asked him if there was any reason why a “normal, he [...]

The Last Dragon Soars and Crashes: Disney's Latest Dominates The U.S. Box Office, Burns Out in China

Posted By themoviesleuth 1736 days ago on Entertainment

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - image courtesy DisneyThe box office continues to struggle in various parts of the world as the pandemic continues to cause damage to finances for all the major studios. This weekend saw Disney's latest animated release, Raya and The Last Dragon take a foothold in the domestic U.S. box office with it's $8.6 million take but it still is only a shade of what it would have done in normal times.A big animation hit for that studio would typically take in much higher opening grosses. Unfortunately, things may really start to improve until the summer when vaccines are much easier to come by. It did come in the number one position beating out any other competition from other newcomers like Chaos Walking and Boogie, but will need to recoup major money from its Disney+ premium rental. Strangely
