The sun streams across the East Passage of Narragansett Bay in the early morning. I am standing near the M/V Coastal Queen in Jamestown, Rhode Island. The vessel is in a position that leaves me feeling as though I need to get to work as I remember my old excursion boat days.

This is a vessel that has been around for a long time. I remember this vessel as the "Viking Queen", a bigger sister vessel to the "Viking Princess" in Newport. The vessel had fallen into disrepair. It was fortunate that refurbishment occurred at Wickford Shipy

Serene Cards Pond Reflections by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Walking away from Moonstone Beach in the late afternoon, I look to the east, to my right. Looking upward in the wires, I look to check for fishing lines and a lure. They are there, always different, but always there from someone's errant cast.

This is Card's Pond. This is on the small pedestrian causeway that allows access to Moonstone Beach. It is always calm and serene due to its protection from almost all winds.

Cards Pond is a transitional life metaphor. It's that place that we do not our destination but serves as a transition point that sets our attitudes. We go to the beach with anticipation of a pleasant experience. We leave having had that experience. Somehow, this serene image is what anchors our attitudes hours and days later.

A Country DriveBright late afternoon spring sunlight filters through the trees highlighting a country drive in Rhode Island's South County

As a youngster, Sunday afternoons outside of boating season were for taking a drive. Though I am not that old, the drive was more rural. Driving down what is now a retail district was a drive in the country (what is now Route 2 in Warwick, Rhode Island).

On those Sunday Drives, we would pass various properties and farms. Looking out the backseat window, I was often enamored with the property's driveways. Some were straight. Some curved. Some fence lined. The term is, "character". These places had character.

So today, as I move about, I make note of rural settings.

Fishing Boat Comfort by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Last year, about a year ago exactly as of this writing, we were itching to get out. We slipped out of the house, almost feeling like we did something wrong, to stretch our legs in the open air. We found ourselves in the comfort of the familiar docks in the Port of Galilee.

We assuaged our newfound "COVID guilt" with an evening stroll among the fishing boats. Some find the fishing port scents overwhelming. I grew up along various fishing piers. The smells were lively and comforting to me through the filter of my mask. Timeless. Familiar. I look back at the images now and still find comfort.

The most beautiful and unspoiled spots take work to see. Hiking is part of the adventure. Whale Rock Preserve in Narragansett, Rhode Island is one of those places. The spot lies on the shore of the very southernmost place in Narragansett Bay. To the south beyond is Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.

Marsh Grass by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - There is a certain undefined quiet comfort in being by marsh grass. One experiences a stillness that is only disturbed by the wind ruffling the grasses.

Marsh Grass

Marsh GrassMarsh grass is seen in the marsh area of Fox Hill Pond abutting Dutch Harbor, Jamestown, Rhode Island. A peaceful scene with marinas and the Newport Pell Bridge in the background.

That undefined quiet is one of the things that signify the benefits of marshland. Marshes are buffers between wave and storm action of the ocean or bay and more stable, fertile ground. Marshes and distribute nutrients into that fertile soil and filter out pollutants. They are also breeding grounds for commercial and recreational fish.

The quiet peace of looking at marsh grass holds a great deal of meaning. Given the calm fee

Walking is at the center of most of these encounters. It allows for moments of the expected and unexpected. Late Sunday afternoon at the Botanical Gardens at the University of Rhode Island finds this mix.

Encountering beautiful peonies is a stark moment that stops everyone in their tracks. Delicate and tissue-like petals dance in the light and slight warm breeze. Shadows play and petals smile.

The specials of the day on the board in the Port of Galilee. Ocean to Table.

I have always had a little thrill walking by hand-lettered chalkboard with the latest catch. It's part of life on the shore, on the waterfront. Sometimes one is a patron of the shop or restaurant, other times one has been the supplier. Either way, there is something comforting about seeing the fresh daily catch at the dock.

The Past's Mosaic Template Of The FutureGlass block wall outside the former pool entry at the Old East Providence High School created a rain speckled mosaic template for the new school building

The past is often an imperfect mosaic that leads us into the future. We look through a glass darkly; uncertain of what the future brings but knowing that the future is ahead of us regardless.

On the last weekend of May 2021, my wife, Jen, received an invitation to visit East Providence High School. This is where she graduated from some years ago. The old high school building is being torn down and the education is moving to a new building.

Found History: The Old Man's Face Of Narragansett by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Harkening back to the heady days of Victorian Era Narragansett, Rhode Island. The word of the day was resorts. The places to visit were the casino, the resorts, and the shore.

The inspiration of Narragansett Victorian architecture was rock and stone. The Narragansett Towers. The Lifesaving station that is now a restaurant and churches remain. These are all credited to the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White.

The hobby of the time was photography. George Eastman of Kodak fame (a contemporary of that time) played a big role in this pastime. Tourists brought their shiny new cameras to Narragansett on their vacations.

Driftwood And Stacked StonesStones stacked on a well-traveled and weather-beaten driftwood log on Moonstone Beach, South Kingstown, Rhode Island

Driftwood is a fascination of beachcombers. We like to believe that enchantment is about survival and longevity.

A large log as driftwood conjures up all forms of imaginary scenarios. Where did this log come from? Did it fall in the water from erosion? Did it come from a ship? Did someone have it in tow to build a shelter? Was there a terrible storm that caused the tree to fall off a cliff?

But this could be the lure of driftwood. This log has journeyed a distance and has the scars to show it. It has a story, even if only in our imaginations. It has, even

Sunday Morning Walk In The Snow by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Sunday morning snow that is falling gentle on the ground, on the lake, on yourself. This is the perfect time to take a walk with the family.

Sights seen every day have changed. Clean, bright, and pristine. The lake covered, roads made clean, snow-covered roofs, fields leveled with snow.

In muffled footsteps, the world made new and still. This is the gift of New England in winter.

Easing AlongEasing in along the docks and throttling back preparing to dock in the Port of Galilee on a cloudy, rainy morning

When coming into port, especially on a cloudy day, one must throttle down and ease along. In Galilee (Narragansett, Rhode Island), this is sometimes easier said than done.

When one arrives in a port such as Galilee on a stormy day, there are often a few steps. First, when the swells are sweeping in from the south (as they were on this day), there are adjustments. The following seas mean that one is "playing" the wheel and throttles. Once in the breakwater, the seas can often peak a bit as the bottom shoals up a bit. Then once in port, the skipper is breaking down that little bit of adr

Diving In by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - The sculpture "The Feet And The Wave" in Newport has always evoked a whimsical chuckle from me. There is no guilt in the humor. In fact, someone said something to me recently that makes me think that it was a compliment. I wrote a similar blog and a respondent said that it was humorous, "amusing". I thanked the person because that was the purpose, to be amusing.

There is also a serious side to the playfulness of this sculpture. While not an art critic by any means, I can sense the transition of going from air to water. It is always a shock and an awakening wrapped in fun.

Passing this statue as season change seems fitting. The socks that often adorn the feet in winter can come off as we dive into the spring season.
