Resting With DriftwoodDriftwood and house on Matunuck Beach with waves rolling in and a very high spring tide

As we walk on the beach, we often wonder. With extreme tides and waves, we often marvel at what will wash up. We also wonder what could wash away.

In this case, a driftwood tree has washed up on the beach. And an ancient cottage needs protection. Sand on the shore and sandbags surrounding. This is a stormy day in Southern Rhode Island.

A Rose's TearA rose in a Memorial Day weekend shedding a single tear.

On Memorial Day weekend, a rose offers an eloquent expression of our feelings. Emotions pour forth as we wish ours could.

Rain On The RoseRose unfolding in the rain

We are living in a space where we had a difficult year. In that time, we cultivated our yard. We planted and we tended. The spring rains have come, and our reward has been a bevy of roses. Now, we preserve the images for another day.

The Past's Mosaic Template Of The FutureGlass block wall outside the former pool entry at the Old East Providence High School created a rain speckled mosaic template for the new school building

The past is often an imperfect mosaic that leads us into the future. We look through a glass darkly; uncertain of what the future brings but knowing that the future is ahead of us regardless.

On the last weekend of May 2021, my wife, Jen, received an invitation to visit East Providence High School. This is where she graduated from some years ago. The old high school building is being torn down and the education is moving to a new building.

"You fight dandelions all weekend, and late Monday afternoon there they are, pert as all get out, in full and gorgeous bloom, pretty as can be, thriving as only dandelions can in the face of adversity."

Dandelion And Sunshine

Dandelions provoke mixed feelings wherever we go. This especially applies in our own yards. They signify something that is not accepted in our lawn culture. All the same, they reach out to us in sunny contrast to the green grass.

Here I have walked our yard in the morning sun. Crows are making their noise as another bird chirps. And reaching to the early light through the shadows are the dandelions. I decide that since they have asserted themselves on th

Do dandelions have a dark side? This I do not know. I am amazed about their transformation from yellow flowering plants to fuzzy globes. Nabakov was right; dandelions change from suns to moons.

Our roses have given us much joy over the last year when we could not venture far. They are making their first appearance of the current year. The first blossom appears, deep within the bush, wondering if it is safe to come out.

A commenter view this photo simply said, "I see Hope". Being that this photo was taken at the Rhode Island shore, it is fitting to invoke "Hope" (the state motto).

"My" tree is gone. I went for a walk on Matunuck Beach with my wife today and "my" tree was gone. Lost to the wind, wave, tides, and erosion of winter.

I call it "my" tree because I entered a photograph of

Mornings are quiet on the river. It is as if there is an old man alongside the banks telling everything to slow down. The current runs with deceptive alacrity, but the appearance is quiet and serene. Reflective. Look south. Look north. Relax to the quiet rhythm of the river.

Beach Waves Under Dramatic Skies by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

"I always like to say hello to the ocean, because no matter what, it will wave back to me." ~Unknown

Some have expressed that I have saltwater in my veins. That I have nervous shakes when I go inland for two long. These are obvious hyperbole that is only funny because of their juxta positioned veracity.

In reality, I have spent time inland. I have spent much more time on or near the water. There is a reason why I live near the beach. This is the place for comfort, thoughtfulness, and inspiration. And the ocean never fails to offer its welcome.
