Rhody On WatchRhody the Ram looking over the University of Rhode Island campus.

As spring closes and summer begins to warm, the University of Rhode Island campus quiets. A lone ram, Rhody, looks over the campus with a protective all-seeing glint in his eye. The campus is in good "hands".

Naturally Doubly Exposed Pier by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - The waterfront is a wonderful metaphor for many things. In this case, looking at something from more than one perspective. An explainable mystery that we cannot fully wrap our minds around.

Here we see a typical pier surface with marine growth and a few small barnacles. Wonderful shapes and textures, especially the swirls of the woodgrains in the spiles. The reflections in the calm water's surface with only mild disturbances and ripples. And all at the same moment seeing below the water at the same time.

The whole image conjures up the thought of M. C. Escher and his work. Everything here is explainable by science and mathematics. It is all-natural. Photo manipulation is not involved. The reflections are from the angle of incidence of light on the flat calm water. The viewing

People often see inactivity when they see vessels at the dock on a foggy later afternoon. This is far from the truth. Right now, the batteries are being charged. There is potential activity here. Tomorrow will be very busy.

Tomorrow, these vessels packed together at the dock will start readying for work at sea. The vessels need maintenance. The equipment needs maintenance and repair. Inspections occur as lists reveal who is in port.

Active at the moment? No. Soon to be about the business of fishing? Yes.

We are living in a space where we had a difficult year. In that time, we cultivated our yard. We planted and we tended. The spring rains have come, and our reward has been a bevy of roses. Now, we preserve the images for another day.

A closeup of the grain of a driftwood stump found on Moonstone Beach in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

There is an undeniable attraction to driftwood as we walk the beach. From far away, it is something bleached, twisted, different, and interesting. Up close, there are patterns, swirls, embedded with sand and stones.

To others, it is an inspiration. It is art. Henry David Thoreau wrote of its inspiration on the beach. To critic Harold Rosenberg, it is a way of explaining modern art: "Modern Art does not have to be actually new; it only has to be new to somebody—to the last lady who fo

Into Each LifeInto each life a little rain must fall. Especially when crossing the sound on a rainy day on the M/V Block Island

Into each life, some rain must fall, especially if your life is on an island ferry. Along with the rain come bow watches, wet windows, and rolling ships.

This is ferry and island life. The islanders and the crews grow accustomed to these sea conditions. Tourists will grumble with these conditions, but they need only wait. There is a clearing over the island fine on the starboard bow. But for now, the views of bulwarks and capstans forward are rain-covered. And we can tell you that they are playing jazz, perhaps Ella, at a c

The Highlights Of Snow by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - We bid adieu to Winter as Spring strolls in. The snow has departed from Rhode Island. Winds will still blow with a certain ferocity as rain becomes the seasonal herald in place of snow.

So we take a moment to observe and appreciate what the snow offered. It painted the shapes that we will remember. The snow highlighted paths and accentuated curves. The clean accents of the snow made us appreciate our surroundings more, not less.

We will miss the snow, but also welcome the changes and the accompanying warmth. Until next year, we archive the painted frozen memories.

Lines, Function, and Working Beauty by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Stern View Waterline

Stern View WaterlineStern view of a working boat cabled out in Dutch Harbor, Jamestown, Rhode Island.

I love classic styles of workboats and fishing vessels. This is but one example. The hardy work vessel is functional and open. The graceful lines lend to its function.

A powerful stem juts above the high bow. The level of the bow is perfect for splitting open waves and throwing them aside. This keeps the operator safe and dry.

The sheerline comes from the need to have a lower middle and stern for working and hauling. In this case, a winch rigged on the console says that they are hauling traps with this boat.

This boat carries its width to its stern and transom. This gives it "wide shoulders" and support as items come up over the size in working. Thi

Have you ever been present for a turning in history? This is symbolic of an event of history that changes the familiar landscape itself.

This clock tower will be coming down. There is a plan to replace this tower that will be an homage to the current tower, but it will not be the same. (Building Committee backs new EPHS clock tower concept | EastBayRI.com - News, Opinion, Things to Do in the East Bay)

History is changing. We are the witnesses.

A simple natural shingled structure of typical New England architecture. The Fishhouse serves an important function in waterfront life. This is the interface of the work onshore and the work at sea.

These simple buildings serve as the staging area of the "maritime adventure". "Maritime adventure" being an Admiralty Law and Marine Insurance term with ancient origins. This is where ice and supplies board the vessel.

The fish house is also where the lumpers will unload the fish for sale and auction
