Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now: Shoplifters of the World (2021) - Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - Stop me if you think you've heard this one before..... This spring’s release of Shoplifters Of The World drops on streaming this weekend after several delays amid a global pandemic that’s seen the indie film world struggle to cope. This tongue in cheek copycat of Airheads (1994) is a disappointing effort that won’t even satisfy die hard Smiths fans like myself. Instead, the movie is a ninety minute affair in the purest of annoyances. The dialogue is not natural and stilted. Characters are one sided caricatures of routinely standard ‘80s tropes, personal sexuality is assaulted by terrible cliches and branding, all the while attempting to cash in on current retro trends.Paired with awful acting and writing all around, the only saving grace is the soundtrack by The Smiths, whi

Stanley wants to see the newest cut of his work but, instead, Tomas shows him something that defies reality. This is the plot of the horror short film Electromagnetic. It establishes its characters and premise in a small dialogue exchange in the first couple of minutes that efficiently conveys everything the audience needs to know about this situation. Then, it gets Stanley and Tomas alone. The relationships between the characters are painted in broad strokes, so it can speed past them quickly to get to the crux of its action. Since this is a genre piece, and the most interesting moments occur once the men are in Tomas’ studio, that approach works strongly in its favor. The

Your Own Terms: East of the Mountains (2021)-Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  Based on the novel of the same name, East of the Mountains follows Ben Givens (Tom Skerritt), a retired heart surgeon with a recent terminal cancer diagnosis. Taking his dog with him, he has a final dinner with his daughter (Mira Sorvino) before heading out to Washington State’s Colombia Basin. This site, near where he grew up and fell in love with his now deceased wife, is to serve as the place where he’ll end his life on his own terms. If only it were that simple. What’s remarkable about East of the Mountains is how little actually happens despite the weighty theme of death hanging heavily over the proceedings. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as it allows Ben’s ponderous journey through the wilderness and his past to breathe. The lack of propulsive motion, however, leaves

But this week brings us brand new news about the famed boxing character that Stallone has played since the '70s. While he's hard at work developing a new story that will trace the steps of the characters from the classic movies prior to the first Rocky, Stallone has been busy working on a brand new director's cut of the all American '80s athletic montage film, Rocky IV. The film which released in 1985 was a massive hit for the studio and the director/actor and remains one of the most discussed entries in the series. But as we know by know, Stallone is never done with his characters. The film also came at the peak of the cold war which saw the U.S. a

On a dramatic level, Q and Picard play well off of each other and have a fun frenemy dynamic. This dynamic has carried itself over several episodes and series so we couldn't imagine them not wanting to do it now. And what better day for CBS to announce this than on the day we first made contact with the Vulcans?Don't take my word for it, check out the sneak peek of Season 2 below. While the trailer is light on new footage for the upcoming season, it always nice to hear John DeLancie as Q. Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard is set to come out sometime in 2022 and we can't wait to see what happens next with these two legendary characters.  (function() { var ze

The film from Warner Bros. and director Adam Wingard has gone on to gross the biggest opening weekend since the beginning of the global pandemic. In Danish filmmaker Martin Garde Abildgaard’s debut, A Beautiful Curse, this theme is pushed to its disturbing limits as photojournalist Samuel (Mark Strepan) spends his time watching Stella (Olivia Vinland) sleep, slowly falling for her in the process. On assignment on an island where a mysterious illness has afflicted the residents with perpetual sleep, Samuel spends his days taking photos of the desolate streets. In his off time, he lies next to Stella, a woman he’s found while documenting the island, and telling her everything about himself. She, of course, can’t hear him because she’s asleep but that certainly doesn’t s

While many theater chains think that Godzilla vs Kong is going to be the reset switch they need over the Easter holiday weekend, things are still not looking like they're going to be perfect any time soon. Tonight, Sony Pictures announced that their upcoming restart of the Resident Evil franchise will not meet its currently slated release date of September 3rd. The studio has decided that the film will now move from the early fall to a newly scheduled date of November 24th. This will definitely get it closer to the Christmas movie season, even if things aren't fully back to normal. Director Johannes Roberts recently stated that this new movie seri

For a long time its sole cultural legacy was that of a notorious Hollywood flop that almost ended Jessica Lange's career before it started, and stood alongside Dune as proof for many that producer Dino De Laurentiis could not be trusted to successfully helm a Hollywood blockbuster. But in recent years, the internet discourse around De Laurentiis's Kong has changed significantly, as people have revisited the film for the first time in years and had the collective reaction, "hey, wait a second, this is actually pretty good!"
