Lines, Function, and Working Beauty by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Stern View WaterlineStern view of a working boat cabled out in Dutch Harbor, Jamestown, Rhode Island.

I love classic styles of workboats and fishing vessels. This is but one example. The hardy work vessel is functional and open. The graceful lines lend to its function.

A powerful stem juts above the high bow. The level of the bow is perfect for splitting open waves and throwing them aside. This keeps the operator safe and dry.

The sheerline comes from the need to have a lower middle and stern for working and hauling. In this case, a winch rigged on the console says that they are hauling traps with this boat.

This boat carries its width to its stern and transom. This gives it "wide shoulders" and support as items come up over the size in working. Thi

Lobster Trap On Wintry Beach by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Walking on the beach in winter is a different experience than in the summer. In the summer, they drag and clean the beach daily. In the winter, the gull's natural "raw bar" leaves fascinating shells all over. And then there are the remains of fishing and items such as lobster traps washed ashore.

The lobster traps are usually beaten up as they have been turning about on the bottom. They have hung up on rocks and pounded in the surf. They are a mess of vinyl-coated mal-formed and bent wire by the time they come ashore.

In this case, someone dragged the trap up to the dunes. The wind has started showing patterns in the sand as the dune grass bends. Even without snow, this is winter on the beach, and it is fascinating to see. We will join in the cleanups come spring.

Some have expressed that I have saltwater in my veins. That I have nervous shakes when I go inland for two long. These are obvious hyperbole that is only funny because of their juxta positioned veracity.

In reality, I have spent time inland. I have spent much more time on or near the water. There is a reason why I live near the beach. This is the place for comfort, thoughtfulness, and inspiration. And the ocean never fails to offer its welcome.

Mornings are quiet on the river. It is as if there is an old man alongside the banks telling everything to slow down. The current runs with deceptive alacrity, but the appearance is quiet and serene. Reflective. Look south. Look north. Relax to the quiet rhythm of the river.

Dandelion And Sunshine

Dandelions provoke mixed feelings wherever we go. This especially applies in our own yards. They signify something that is not accepted in our lawn culture. All the same, they reach out to us in sunny contrast to the green grass.

Here I have walked our yard in the morning sun. Crows are making their noise as another bird chirps. And reaching to the early light through the shadows are the dandelions. I decide that since they have asserted themselves on th

The past is often an imperfect mosaic that leads us into the future. We look through a glass darkly; uncertain of what the future brings but knowing that the future is ahead of us regardless.

On the last weekend of May 2021, my wife, Jen, received an invitation to visit East Providence High School. This is where she graduated from some years ago. The old high school building is being torn down and the education is moving to a new building.

Resting With DriftwoodDriftwood and house on Matunuck Beach with waves rolling in and a very high spring tide

As we walk on the beach, we often wonder. With extreme tides and waves, we often marvel at what will wash up. We also wonder what could wash away.

In this case, a driftwood tree has washed up on the beach. And an ancient cottage needs protection. Sand on the shore and sandbags surrounding. This is a stormy day in Southern Rhode Island.

Neighborly Flowers Reaching OutA batch of neighbors flowers in bloom on a late afternoon in springtime

We have a neighbor that has the most manicured lawn and landscape in the neighborhood. He's that rugged, grisly-voiced aging veteran that takes pride in everything he does. Disciplined and creative. Meticulous. The gent you trust with a problem. This is the gent that you trust with your sons. And when you need a laugh, there is a welcoming smile, wave, and a conversation full of dry wit.

Our neighbor is aging now. We send our sons over to help him out. When the cords of wood come, we send them over to help

I once read that the waves are the voice of the tides. It's true. As the winds increase against the tide, the resistance will generate waves. The motion of the earth adds to the action with swells. This is a simplistic explanation but it piques our interest in the waves.

But what the wind and tide deposit on the beach attracts the beachcomber and beachgoer. Driftwood in this case. An entire driftwood tree. The bark stripped and every grain raised. Soaked with salt (it would pop with explosive crackles if burned). A fascination deposited on the beach.

Orange is a color that is often called "happy". So coming across a natural display of the color orange that is mysterious and moody is a find.

These orange flowers know that this is later spring and that summer is coming. They know that the rain is coming tonight. They know that brightness is around the corner. But the current climate leaves them unsure, shy, and introverted. They hide in the shadows and look forward to the bright light. Orange flowers are happiness cloaked in mystery and wisdom.

Serendipity. It's a term that I like to embrace more often in the day and age we live in. It's the pleasant, fortuitous surprises that make life more pleasant. A strict definition includes an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.

This is why I like the shoreline and the beach. I enjoy being the "

An enjoyable aspect of photography is that it sometimes captures surreal reality. These moments of seeming surrealism only last for a moment. How does one capture that moment? You have to be lucky enough to be there and aware of your surroundings.

A Country DriveBright late afternoon spring sunlight filters through the trees highlighting a country drive in Rhode Island's South County

As a youngster, Sunday afternoons outside of boating season were for taking a drive. Though I am not that old, the drive was more rural. Driving down what is now a retail district was a drive in the country (what is now Route 2 in Warwick, Rhode Island).

On those Sunday Drives, we would pass various properties and farms. Looking out the backseat window, I was often enamored with the property's driveways. Some were straight. Some curved. Some fence lined. The term is, "character". These places had character.

So today, as I move about, I make note of rural settings.
