The End Is The Beginning Is The End: Undergods (2021)-Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - You’re probably sick of hearing about “unprecedented times” and seeing every new film compared to them. Human nature is to try to relate art to current experiences so at a certain point that becomes unavoidable. Sometimes the comparisons can feel like a stretch but then a film like Undergods comes around and the only thing you can think about is how horrifyingly real it all feels. Multi hyphenate artist Chino Moya makes his feature film debut here with this dizzyingly dystopian anthology. Set in an indeterminate future and filled with a stacked cast of British character actors like Kate Dickie and Burn Gorman, Undergods weaves three stories together, all centered around the oppressive domination capitalism has on a society. Each tale series in on how even when you feel like you’re on

Cult Cinema: Graveyard Shift (1990) - Reviewed

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  Hidden among the soulless tombs of Stephen King adaptations are a handful of memorable gems.  While the overwhelming bulk of these films are forgetful cash grabs, a few manage moments of greatness.  One such example is Ralph Singleton's Graveyard Shift.  Featuring astounding set design, a pair of bravura performances, and several creepy kill sequences, this is a remarkable example of how atmosphere can redeem an otherwise mediocre film.  Singleton's compelling approach breathes life into the sweaty, grimy world of a dilapidated, economically forsaken New England town, filled with desperate souls and unthinkable horrors and the result is a nasty piece of genre gold. A defunct textile mill is the only thing keeping a sleepy Maine town alive, despite an un

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  After his sleeper hit directorial debut Wind River alongside an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay with Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan has proven himself to be at the forefront of a new emergence of neo-western moviemakers.  His latest effort Those Who Wish Me Dead, released simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max, continues in that genre but moves the setting deeper into woodsy terrain, making for a tense, predictable but nonetheless satisfying action suspense vehicle.   Based on the novel by Michael Kortya co-written for the screen by Kortya and producer-director Sheridan, the film follows in the footsteps of Peter Weir’s Witness involving a child who witnesses a murder before going on the run from two assassins who hunt for him in the Montana

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - Russian cult director Timur Bekmambetov’s follow up to his 2016 commercial bomb Ben Hur (the third remake), a webcam thriller called Profile involving a journalist who goes undercover investigating ISIS recruiters, is another one of those movies shelved for years before being dumped into theaters amid the COVID-19 pandemic ala The Empty Man.  Completed in 2018 the film comes to theaters now through Focus Features and is a loose docudrama adaptation of Anne Erelle’s nonfiction book In the Skin of a Jihadist through the computer chatroom lens of Unfriended.   Despite strong performances from the film’s two leads, Valene Kane as the journalist Amy Whittaker who creates a new fake Facebook profile of a woman who recently converted to Islam and Shazad Latif as the charismatic bu

Spiral Crashes: Saw Spin-Off Fails Box Office Expectations

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - image courtesy Lionsgate The long running Saw franchise saw its latest release hit cinemas this weekend. Unfortunately after several delays caused by COVID-19, the Chris Rock brainchild didn't live up to expectations. Spiral, a film which is a direct spin-off to the Saw movies, has had a rough road that didn't get any better when it released this weekend. Although analysts were expecting the film to gross somewhere around $13-15 million in its opening frame, the horror flick only made $8.7 million over the three day window. As could potentially be expected from a series that's gone on for over 15 years, this does not bode well for the franchise as a whole. It seems that the low budget flicks are seeing dwindling returns from an audience that's seemingly beginning to grow out of this

Well, today comes news that the director/writer has officially been offered a deal to make the part two. While the first film was no box office success, it has an amazing cult following that's wanted a sequel for years. This news comes hot on the tail of the original movie's ten year anniversary. As of right now, the story for the second part is being kept under wraps. But both the director and Boyega both made statements that let us know the movie is officially happening. The film will fall under Boyega's production moniker UpperRoom Productions. There is no word on a release date quite yet but this is what Mr. Boyega had to say in response to the breaking news:"I

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com -  A staple of the gangster film is the undoing of empires.  It is almost impossible to think of an example in which things work out for the players within an organized crime syndicate, and yet the genre continues to flourish with films being released each year that highlight the rise and inevitable fall of sympathetic, yet dangerous sociopaths.  Why?  Because the civilized world is fascinated with the dark side, the underworld where there are no constraints.  John Mackenzie's uncompromising masterwork, The Long Good Friday was one of the first evolutions of the genre.  Rather than build towards the end, things begin in the middle of Armageddon.  Harold Shand's criminal empire is evaporating around him while he is simultaneously attempting to go

http://www.spoilerfreemoviesleuth.com - By now, most of us are familiar with the myth of the wish-granting genie: Find a magic lamp, rub the side of it and out pops a smoky creature who will make your dreams come true. Popularized by stories like Disney’s Aladdin and Sidney Sheldon’s I Dream of Jeannie, these whimsical apparitions we have come to love have their origins in the much darker tales of the djinn.Although the exact origin of the djinn is unknown, myths surrounding these supernatural creatures date back to pre-Islamic Arabia. Tales of their characteristics vary from benevolent beings capable of great magic, to evil shape-shifters who can possess the vulnerable and steal children. Islamic era scholars have described the djinn as beings made of a smokeless fire, created by God himself, eventually cast out and forced to
