Sunday Morning Walk In The Snow by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Sunday morning snow that is falling gentle on the ground, on the lake, on yourself. This is the perfect time to take a walk with the family.

Sights seen every day have changed. Clean, bright, and pristine. The lake covered, roads made clean, snow-covered roofs, fields leveled with snow.

In muffled footsteps, the world made new and still. This is the gift of New England in winter.

Serene Cards Pond Reflections by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Walking away from Moonstone Beach in the late afternoon, I look to the east, to my right. Looking upward in the wires, I look to check for fishing lines and a lure. They are there, always different, but always there from someone's errant cast.

This is Card's Pond. This is on the small pedestrian causeway that allows access to Moonstone Beach. It is always calm and serene due to its protection from almost all winds.

Cards Pond is a transitional life metaphor. It's that place that we do not our destination but serves as a transition point that sets our attitudes. We go to the beach with anticipation of a pleasant experience. We leave having had that experience. Somehow, this serene image is what anchors our attitudes hours and days later.

Portrait Of A Gnome by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - I took a photo of a garden gnome in West Kingston, RI only to find out that it has become a symbol of a contemporary issue. Yes, a symbol or victim of my other profession of maritime transit. Recently (as of April 2021), there was a ship that blocked the Suez Canal in the Middle East.

The ship that blocked the Suez Canal is free now. Well, the ship is under arrest (one arrests the personality of a ship under Admiralty Law). There will be many issues to settle including the issue of "General Average".

But as a result of this global trade "hiccup", there is now a global shortage of garden gnomes. You can read more here: Gnome shortage: Lockdown and Suez canal blockage blamed - BBC News

So, protect and appreciate your gnomes. They may become sought after commodities.

Pink Blossoms of April by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Blossoming PinkPink flowers in spring

The sun's descent is a little bit later in April. Its special light gives soft illumination to the changes that April brings. Changes that we have awaited with tense patience since the end of winter.

We wait, watch, and anticipate as we watch our favorite plantings. Passing a favored bush, we check for the potential of buds daily. Then they appear. It's not overnight. The perception is that the slow progress may not be happening, but it is. And then, the glorious color of pink appears. It is here. In the soft afternoon light, the harbinger of true spring i

The flowers bloom and then fluffy hail falls from the Rhode Island sky. What is "fluffy hail", you ask? I see that hand at the back of the room. "Fluffy hail" falls from the sky like the snow of winter, but one is so looking forward to spring that they enter a denial.

So these flowers are not covered in melting snow in April. This is melting fluffy hail. The denial embraced in full. The beauty is not diminished.

Allen Harbor Scallop Shell: A Waterfront Metaphor by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

There is a reason why I make certain distinctions. I realize that the waterfront is on the shoreline. But, there is something distinctive about the waterfront. The connotation of waterfront, if not denotation, is something akin to a utility. Related to utility is work. The waterfront is where things happen.

This work and utility thoughts lead us to a scallop shell cast among bluestone or Belgian Stone. The stone is the edging brought in to stabilize the soil near docks and piers. The scallop shell is the remnant of work (and someone's tasty meal). It's not on the beach and it's not on the shoreline per se. No.

When photographing Narragansett Bay, I have made it a practice not to be operating a boat myself. This view is why. I love operating boats and I have a reputation as a seaman, but this is a different function. While photographing, I utilize the same powers of observation used in vessel operation. Then I allow myself to add in a sense of awe.

Here we have a couple of examples. I looked up. The weather was on the cusp of being beautiful or going completely upside down. The resu

The sun turns milky in appearance as a light fog settles in the atmosphere. A fishing vessel settles in for the night. Dockside activity starts in a few hours under lights, but for now, activity has settled.

The vessel shows graceful curves in this port-bow view. The sheer sweeps from stem to stern in a beautiful sweep. Even at rest, the vessel's flared bow seems ready to throw water aside.

But what frames the scene are the rocks of the point and the clouds above. The clouds flow as markers of the rivers of wind in the spring air. Soon, the tide will change and that wind will face the tide, churning up chop on the water. This is the natu

A simple natural shingled structure of typical New England architecture. The Fishhouse serves an important function in waterfront life. This is the interface of the work onshore and the work at sea.

These simple buildings serve as the staging area of the "maritime adventure". "Maritime adventure" being an Admiralty Law and Marine Insurance term with ancient origins. This is where ice and supplies board the vessel.

The fish house is also where the lumpers will unload the fish for sale and auction

People often see inactivity when they see vessels at the dock on a foggy later afternoon. This is far from the truth. Right now, the batteries are being charged. There is potential activity here. Tomorrow will be very busy.

Tomorrow, these vessels packed together at the dock will start readying for work at sea. The vessels need maintenance. The equipment needs maintenance and repair. Inspections occur as lists reveal who is in port.

Active at the moment? No. Soon to be about the business of fishing? Yes.

I have always had a little thrill walking by hand-lettered chalkboard with the latest catch. It's part of life on the shore, on the waterfront. Sometimes one is a patron of the shop or restaurant, other times one has been the supplier. Either way, there is something comforting about seeing the fresh daily catch at the dock.

"One touch of nature makes the whole world kin."

As we walk, boat, hike, and move about our lives, we often encounter wildlife of different types. There are those who crawl out of the beach sand, those who fly above us, and those who scamper around us. We appreciate them all.

Check out some of these from our Nature/Wildlife Portfolio were we seek to offer smiles and wonder.

Bright sun and crisp air and freshly fallen snow. It clings to the trees and every bit of growth, bright and fresh. Stepping through the landscape encounters puffs of silver powder followed by a crunch. The sun illuminates all under bright blue skies. Look at the forecast because more snow is on the way.

Snow Covered At Ruins 1View of the Carriage House Ruins at Black Point from Scarborough Beach (in snow).

In the summer, there is a ubiquitous scene at the extreme northern end of Scarborough Beach. That is the ruins of the Carriage House. Some consider, with accuracy, that the ruins are at the southern end of Black Point. Either way, they are part of anyone's Narragansett, Rhode Island beach visit.

Those Carriage House ruins? They are still there in the winter too. It's colder, but they become part of the walk on the beach. Bundled in warm jackets, scarves, and gloves, feet in boots as we walk, the ruins remain.

The view is devoid of the greenery in the background and the Beach Roses in the foreground. The beach life replaced by snow. The snow becom

What is different about walking on the beach in winter? There is a ring of snow around the beach. The footprints that we leave are actually booted against the cold sand. There are fewer people. There are different types of seabirds.

But a big difference is the air. The cold, crisp temperature

Bay Morning Between Winter And Spring by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - There is a space in time where one season has not ended and the next has not yet begun. We see the changes occurring first in the air and water.

The textures in the clouds are the first elements indicating the seasonal change. The clouds become more full and start to show a rougher texture. The color of the water is the other element as it changes from a deep blue, almost black, to something lighter.

These seasonal changes happen in phases. The air and the water are the first heralds of what is coming. Soon, in a few weeks, birds will be chirping in the early morning and greenery will start filling in. But for now, the essence of both departing winter and arriving spring dance together.

Uplifting DocksideA crane performing off-season work at the URI Bay Campus in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

It's late winter. The trees are bare. The moorings are devoid of watercraft. The docks and piers are empty. That means that there is work to do.

Barges and cranes brought in for the off-season to work. To build. To repair. To construct. This is the time that we see this type of activity. This is to say, that this activity, this work often goes unseen.

We should see this type of work. We should appreciate what this activity accomplishes. This work enables other maritime activity. This work enables learning and education. This work makes the boating season possible. We should see it. We should respect it. It is a beautiful and creative aesthetic.

Reflective Flowers In Newport by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Working on the water, I am very accustomed to working with reflections. But on Thames Street in Newport, I had the opportunity to work with another form of reflection. I was able to photograph flowers through a reflective window.

In Physics, we know this as the angle of light incidence is the same as the angle of reflection. In art, viewing through a window is a time-honored technique. Edward Hopper and Nighthawks come to mind.

Coming back to the moment, this is a great metaphor for life in Newport. Looking in at the scene in a restaurant while life continues to move outside.
