Newport Clear View by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

One of my maritime licenses says that I am an operator of "Steam and Motor Vessels". My non-maritime friends have scoffed at that terminology. But steam is part of my background and it is part of a remembered empty view of Newport Harbor.
As a young man, on a later winter but almost spring day, I remember Newport Harbor being this clear and empty. It was overcast but good visibility with a high tide. These conditions had to be. The Steamer "Naushon" was being brought into the then Newport Shipyard for haul out. This was a larger ship, most likely the largest of its type to enter Newport Harbor.
I had a connection to that ship. Several boats that we had growing up bore the name "Naushon" (although out of Benza's Marina in Warwick Cove). I had read of the predecessor steamer "Naushon" in many books. We had pen and ink drawings of these steamers by artist Bill Ewen in our home. On that day, my father was among the Pilots bringing the vessel into Newport (having cross sound and Narragansett Bay pilotage).
Newport is not seen in this condition often. In fact, rarely. On this day, it was without a legendary steamer.
