When hiking, I always revel in finding a hollow in a tree. For one thing, a hollow in a tree signifies old woodland. That tree has been there for a while. Hollows form from tree stress, fungi, or animals or insects burrowing into the heartwood.
A tree hollow acts as a resource or habitat for many vertebrate and invertebrate animals. It's a sign of life and activity. When found in the snow, as this one was, it is also a potential for shelter from the cold.
