Window To HistoryViewing the historical buildings of the South County museum through the windows of the Canonchet Estate Stable Ruins. Narragansett, Rhode Island

Living in Rhode Island, there are ample views into history. We live in the cradle of the birth of a nation. Visual metaphors of history are so ubiquitous that they are often taken for granted. We cannot afford to take this rich history for granted.

Having two boys in our household gives us a greater appreciation for that history. They are thirsty to learn, and we are anxious for them to learn. On this day, we combined some hiking by the salt marshes with our son's desire to learn blacksmithing. That led us to the South County Museum.

I could not help wandering into the Canonchet Estate Stable.

Walking West by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

(This blog is a continuation of Walking East At Indian Run Reservoir)

There is a change in the temperament of scenery when shifting from east to west while hiking. The air changes with where one faces the breeze. The light changes as well, becoming brighter as one walks toward the afternoon sun. So too does the attitude of the hiker change.

I was not in a bad mood on this walk as the opening quote from Hippocrates might suggest. But, I found that my attitude having spent the time in thought in the snow had improved nonetheless. Like changing direction from east to west, everything was a little different... and even better than when I started.

Swiss Homage In Westerly, Rhode Island by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - No, these photos are not displaying preparation to ascend Santis. These images are from the Ocean House on Watch Hill here in Rhode Island.

There is cross purposing for these Rhode Island Swiss images. I have a post-pandemic invitation to show some of my work in Basel, Switzerland. My photographic work coupled with my late grandfather's artwork from years past. My grandfather is a native son of Switzerland, born outside Basel in Bubendorf. He emigrated to the United States, Rhode Island, in 1900. For many years, my grandfather was a lithographer, general artist, engrosser, and calligrapher.

By the by, if you ever find yourself in the position of taking a gondola ride to the top of Santis, do so. The view is spectacular. In the same vein, if you ever find yourself in a position of ha

Snow Flows To Sea by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Snow Flows To Sea

Snow Flows To SeaThe snow on the rocks shapes itself as if water were flowing off the rocks to the water. At Black Point, Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Observing the snow on the rocks points to the natural ebb and flow of the shore. In studying the snow, it appears as graceful flowing water. In a sense, it is.

While the tide is out at this moment in time when the tide comes in and there is a storm, water drums in on these rocks. Over time, the receding waves have worn these rocks as the water seeks its natural level.

The snow has acted as a natural paintbrush to highlight the wave action. The ice shows the natural pools that form. This freezes the scene in place as the dynamic of the clouds move above and the waves below.

Soon, winter will recede as the water has.

Classic Narragansett Beach Fence by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - Classics. Classic views, classic scenes, classic imagery are concepts that appear around our home. We escaped to take a walk on the beach before a snowstorm and found so much.

The beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island is a few short miles from our home. It's a place that we are familiar with, but it changes a great deal in a short time. Wind and wave of winter storms did not erode but instead shifted the contours of the beach (and more photos to come).

Encapsulating the changes was the shifting of one fence. It captured the sun and cast shadows in a wonderful way. Grasses on the dunes and clouds scudding in the background. A classic view sustaining until summer comes again.

Snow by the water at Black Point, Narragansett, Rhode Island

Snow by the shore is something that makes one choose. One either enjoys the snow by an area that they consider to be a summer place or not. Either way, the snow remains. I choose to enjoy the snow and the change of scenery.

Walking at Black Point, the scene is spectacular. The rocks covered in snow. Yes, we tread with care. The tide pools take on different hues as they ice over.

The waves still roll in and crash on the rocks. The soft, white clouds above frame the scene in the dying winter afternoon light. The scenes are enjoyable.

Ripples And StonesViewing rocks and stones in the water at Whale Rock Refuge in Narragansett, Rhode Island

Clear waters and the entrance of Narragansett Bay. The remarkable clarity of water found at the shore of Whale Rock Preserve reveals so much.

Among the revealed are stones of a variety of colors and textures. We have questioned this recent clarity and have wondered why this condition exists.

One reason for the cleanliness is the regular tidal current clearing these areas. We theorize that another reason is the relative recency of oyster and mussel farming. Oysters and mussels are bivalve water filters, cleaners, of water. Support for this theory is also the finding of eelgrass in various spots.

Snow Path By The Sound by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - There are times that one needs to go out and blaze a new trail. These are times to seek adventure and explore. The photographed situation was not one of those days.

This was a peaceful day walking in the late afternoon sun. The path placed before us led us along the shore in snow. Having something to follow helped us relax, unwind, and appreciate the views around us.

Sometimes, blazing a path is the way. Other times, it is settling into the comfort of the known but living the experience in a different way. Such was this afternoon.

Allen Harbor Scallop Shell: A Waterfront Metaphor by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Scallop shell in bluestone

There is a reason why I make certain distinctions. I realize that the waterfront is on the shoreline. But, there is something distinctive about the waterfront. The connotation of waterfront, if not denotation, is something akin to a utility. Related to utility is work. The waterfront is where things happen.

This work and utility thoughts lead us to a scallop shell cast among bluestone or Belgian Stone. The stone is the edging brought in to stabilize the soil near docks and piers. The scallop shell is the remnant of work (and someone's tasty meal). It's not on the beach and it's not on the shoreline per se. No.

Orange Shadows CastIn the late-day sun, highlights of light and shadows cast

Orange is a color that is often called "happy". So coming across a natural display of the color orange that is mysterious and moody is a find.

These orange flowers know that this is later spring and that summer is coming. They know that the rain is coming tonight. They know that brightness is around the corner. But the current climate leaves them unsure, shy, and introverted. They hide in the shadows and look forward to the bright light. Orange flowers are happiness cloaked in mystery and wisdom.

What, exactly, are we trying to express here at Made From RI Gallery? We are attempting to show Rhode Island, its features, and its people in a positive light. We are trying to show some maritime or waterfront life in a positive light.

You will start hearing me express myself as a "Cultured Wharf Rat" or an "Educated Beach Bum". Other elevated self-deprecating terms will creep in as well. It's an attempt to elevate the beautiful things that we all take for granted. The crane on the waterfront. The shell on the beach forming an impromptu collage. The weather formation in the distance. These all have meaning in our lives. We are pulling that context

Hollow Of The Tree by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - When hiking, I always revel in finding a hollow in a tree. For one thing, a hollow in a tree signifies old woodland. That tree has been there for a while. Hollows form from tree stress, fungi, or animals or insects burrowing into the heartwood.

A tree hollow acts as a resource or habitat for many vertebrate and invertebrate animals. It's a sign of life and activity. When found in the snow, as this one was, it is also a potential for shelter from the cold.

Some wait for a celebration for fireworks to dot the sky with splashes of color. We need not wait if we slow down and look down at the ground. Nature often provides us with its own exciting but quiet splash of color too. We found these "fireworks" at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI.

What is different about walking on the beach in winter? There is a ring of snow around the beach. The footprints that we leave are actually booted against the cold sand. There are fewer people. There are different types of seabirds.

But a big difference is the air. The cold, crisp temperature

A commenter view this photo simply said, "I see Hope". Being that this photo was taken at the Rhode Island shore, it is fitting to invoke "Hope" (the state motto).

"My" tree is gone. I went for a walk on Matunuck Beach with my wife today and "my" tree was gone. Lost to the wind, wave, tides, and erosion of winter.

I call it "my" tree because I entered a photograph of

Delta Means Change by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery

Posted By MadeFromRI on Photography

https://www.madefromrigallery.com - A winter storm strikes. Sands shift. A navigation channel is gone. It appears that a new or altered river delta has formed. "Delta" is the right geological and figurative term because so much changed. This is the nature of change. This is Narragansett. This is the Narrow River.

I walk to the end of Narragansett Beach and watch the water as it shifts and moves where it is not "supposed" to be. I make some quick hops and jumps to keep my feet dry. I am standing on what is now a part of the river bed. The existential feeling that I should not be here starts to creep in.

I stand observing this familiar place (I have hiked out here many times) that is no longer familiar. The sand has shifted to a geographic point that is foreign yet the same. Yet, like so many things fore

The bridge has since become iconic, featured on the representative quarter in 2001. It is also the longest suspension bridge in New England.

This morning, it is a glorious spot highlighted by the sun. The cleat on the pier awaits boats and in a few weeks, the empty moorings will have occupancy. A calm spring sunrise illuminates future activity.
