When Swells Find RocksWhat happens when the swells meet the rocks

There are days that one is thankful to live near the shore. This is a place where we are able to listen to the waves, calm the mind, and come back to being ourselves.

My amazement will never cease with regard to how nature provides us art on demand for those who take the time to observe. I photograph these impromptu works because this slate will be wiped clean tomorrow.

Harvesting Andromeda Hanging OnA bee harvesting an Andromeda Bush buds for pollen

Walking outdoors with my camera, I found a bee near our Andromeda bush. The plant itself was an anniversary gift to my wife and me. It began as an ankle-high shrub and now matches my six-foot one-inch height.

This spring, the Andromeda has experienced explosive growth. The tiny flowers cover every visible part of it.

And this spring, the bees have come out. Bees that are as large as my thumb from the interphal

There is an old maxim about April showers and May flowers. We all know it. But here we see the results. Life sprouting forth from the ground. Insects seeking the life-giving drops of water. Fascinating.

Bright South County PastoralSouth County pastoral scene under bright late afternoon sun and clouds moving in. About a quarter of a mile down the street is the shore.

" The feeling that life is essentially inadequate to the human spirit ... is naturally at home with most versions of pastoral." ~ William Empson

We live in mythical South County, Rhode Island. I say mythical because there is no official "South County". Our town is in "Washington County". But, "South County" is the local colloquial and historical reference.

And it is good that South County is "mythical" because so is its presence. Myth made manifest. Within minutes, seconds in some cas

There is a section of the Saugatucket River that meanders into Silver Spring Cove. Point Judith Pond is further beyond.

As the river travels it moves under roads and highways. I am standing on a bridge forming one of the residential roads.

On this early spring evening, the light is doing what the river does. It meanders. It is doing that thing where the sun ducks behind a cloud and reappears. S

In high school, mathematics, science, and the lab is either the dread or the salvation of student. For me, it was salvation. This is where I excelled and found myself. Balancing equations in Chemistry was a joy; seeing their impact come to life in the lab was an elation.

Wandering the halls of the East Providence High School, these subjects came to life again. Beakers and flasks in the lab room. In another the equation declaring the "part divided by the wh

Watching the waves crash against the shore. It is a fascination. They seem to crash in slow motion, but the action is actually rather swift. The sound reverberates before even seeing the waves. But to sit in one spot and watch those waves is mesmerizing. And like snowflakes, no two are the same.

The high school gym is a place of elation for some, the obligation for others, and even dread for a few. There is an assurance that everyone has some memory of the gymnasium.

As the East Providence High School closes, a classic gym will go. The lacquered floors, the real wood bleachers, the block construction. The banners will remain, but this is a place blessed by memories of the athletes. It is also a place that may haunt the minds of former opponents.

This is a place of nostalgia. It is a place of honor. And in evidence, there is a name on the boards representing such recognition.

Providence In A Tree FrameViewing the Providence skyline through the frame of trees along the Providence River

I was hiking in East Providence, Rhode Island. I have an explorer's heart, so I have a tendency to find a path and ask the question, "What's through here?"

Today, I viewed something that I have not seen since childhood. That is the Providence skyline framed out by trees. I grew up on the peak of Warwick Neck. Looking north out our picture window, we could see the Providence skyline.
