Shipwrecks to Camel Treks – Navigating Mauritania's Highlights Part 4 – Chinguetti's Old Library and a Medical Emergency

Posted By TeamHazardRides 1863 days ago on Travel

http://www.teamhazardridesagain.com - In the past, Chinguetti was not only a major trading post in the Sahara Desert, but a major stop on the pilgrimage path to Mecca. It is also considered the seventh holiest Muslim city in the world.

There are 5 ancient libraries in Chinguetti, but only one or two that regularly open to the public to give tours. There are thousands of books in the care of the families that built these desert libraries so long ago. Most of them are religious, but many cover subjects like astronomy and mathematics. Muslim scholars from every field are represented here.

While the curator had some wonderful stories, when my husband's blood sugar plummeted, we brought some drama of our own.

http://www.teamhazardridesagain.com - The thing is, we found that people were thrilled to have us there. They were excited to share their party with foreigners (of which there were very few). We got hugs and people wanting to talk to us. They loved taking pictures and showing off for the camera. Over the four days of the festival, I received three spontaneous kisses on the cheek.
