You may be a blogger, you may even be an outstanding blogger, but that doesn’t automatically make you a great photographer. In fact, a lot of bloggers really struggle when it comes to including photography on their blogs. That’s not to say that all do – there are wonderful bloggers/photographers out there, but not everyone falls into that category. If you’re looking for a way to improve the quality of the photos on your blog then keep these things in mind while snapping photographs:
Top 5 Amateur Photography Tips for Bloggers
The best camera for you is the one you will use | You can own a fancy, expensive camera, but if you’re never going to actually pull it out and use it then it won’t make an ounce of difference. Instead, if you always carry around and use your digital point-and-shoot, or even just your phone camera, then use the photographs you capture on there. A camera is only going to benefit you if you’re comfortable with using it.
Natural lighting beats flash any day | The effects that you get from photographing subjects in natural lighting will almost always produces a better-looking, more forgiving picture. Flash tends to overexpose various aspects of the picture, leaving you with a photograph that needs more editing than it’s worth. Stick to natural lighting whenever possible to capture the most vibrant colors and the best definition within your photographs.
Take several shots at different angles | By taking several different angle shots you give yourself more options to choose from when it comes time to upload them to the blog. Pictures look different once you can see them on a bigger screen, and you may catch something interesting in one angle that you weren’t able to in another.
Make the focus slightly off center | Your subject doesn’t always have to be the center focal point of the picture. You can often make a photograph more attention-grabbing by having the main point of your picture off to one side because it allows you to capture more of the scenery and thus tell more of the story.
Use photos to supplement the story | Using photographs in blog posts gives your readers a chance to take a break from something that is otherwise very text-heavy and therefore hard to read in its entirety. Sometimes you can capture something in a photograph that you can’t accurately write out, so include pictures to help tell the story. This will also help your readers feel like they were actually there.
Photography is a great addition to any blog and can really help a blog post stand out from what it would be without them. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to put good photos on your blog; you just have to focus on using the photographs you have to complement the post you’re writing.
