Skype Me™!

I see it all the time and trust me I’ve been there and done that. When people first start into social networking or social media marketing they always make the same mistakes.

Today I’m going to compile a list of things you don’t want to do when it comes to social media marketing and social networking.

What we have to understand first is what our end goal will be. Do we know what we want from our marketing efforts? Remember just like financial investments social media marketing has a return on investment too it’s just not based on money it’s based on time.

Things you don’t want to do.

Waste your time and energy – Make sure the community you are putting time into will provide quality feedback, back links and web traffic. Target your market correctly don’t waste your time in communities that provide no return on investment.

Create Multiple User names – So many times I see users sign up with different user names on many different websites. This is a huge mistake as your brand will no longer build up it’s reputation. keep your name consistent in every community or social network you join. This way people that already know you can easily fine you once again.

Be negative and rude – If you get negative feedback from a community member try to turn it around and make it positive. Don’t argue with anyone. Simply state you understand the concern and look forward to trying to fix the issue.

Market in random areas – Try and make sure you post your articles or questions in the most appropriate forums or categories. I see many people do this and it doesn’t look good on yourself and the brand your trying to build. It’s also less significant when it comes to SEO. If you post in a targeted category or forum it will create stronger back links for you in the long run.

Leave and never return – There’s nothing worse than someone that posts a question or promotes a service but never comes back to answer the questions of the community members. Subscribe to the comments make sure you are helping the members get answers to their questions. Take time and show that you care. This will help you in the long run and will create a way stronger brand.

Create duplicate content – When submitting to social networking websites make sure to use a unique title and descriptions. Don’t simply copy and paste your content. Write something unique that is relevant to your article. This will build a strong back link from any of your favorite social communities.

I know this isn’t the hottest list of social networking tips but trust me the small things make the biggest difference. Take time and work on your brand. Use the same user names and pay attention to the feedback your marketing efforts are getting you.
