Hello there! :)

Do you want to become a successful blogger?

I’m sure you do! That’s why you came here in the first place, anyway. :P

Everybody wants to become a successful blogger. Who doesn’t?

However, contrary to what you may think, becoming a successful blogger is not easy. It takes hard work. It takes dedication! It takes… the 3 P’s.

Planning

If you don’t know where you are going, how can you expect to get there?
Basil S. Walsh

To achieve success, you gotta plan! Planning is key, man!

Imagine that your blog is a ship. If you don’t plan your blog’s destination, your blog will be like a ship floating mindlessly in the middle of the sea, letting itself go wherever the waves and wind may take it.

3584965668_0b2341ace7_b

So, you must plan!

Oh yeah, and plan specifically—“I want my blog to earn $300 monthly.” OK, great! How are you going to do that? How long until you achieve that? Be specific.

Set bite-sized plans. “Oohh! I’m gonna earn $1200 monthly in one year!”—That’s too… not bite-sized. You can’t chew it. Instead, go like this:

1st month – $20 weekly
2nd mth – $30 weekly
3rd mth – $45 weekly
….
10th mth – $260 weekly
11th mth – $280 weekly
12th mth – $300 weekly = $1200 monthly | Woohoo! Goal achieved! :D

Notice how it’s “weekly” instead of “monthly”. Now this is a plan you could chew on! :)

Plans are prone to change. So, if the situation changes, adapt your plans to the situation—If your blog-ship is sailing on the sea, and out of the blue, there is a raging storm… You wouldn’t want to go with your plan of catching fish, would you?

Plan specifically, plan challengingly, plan wisely.

Those who plan do better than those who do not plan even though they rarely stick to their plan. — Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister

Passion

2349458100_4764b9cc79_oIt takes passion, guys!

If a blogger loves what he is blogging about, then it is easy for him to become successful.

Your passion is your motivation. If you’re not blogging about your passion, how’d you become successful?

Even if a blogger becomes “successful” by doing something he doesn’t love, he’s not really successful because—how can you be successful doing something you don’t like?

So, blog about your passion, people! “Errr… how do I know what’s my passion?” Whatever you like doing—your hobbies!

Do you like singing, do you like health, do you like cats, do you like jeans, do you like lavender? . Then blog about it!

“But Mr. Gloson Teh, who in the world would want to read about lavender Mr. Gloson Teh?”

Patricia from Lavender Uses blogs about all things lavender, and she’s truly a great blogger. Many bloggers read her blog. Do you know how many comments she gets on each blog post? Approximately 100 comments. That’s even more than my blog!

So, blog about your passion!—May it be fishing, music, sleeping, books, movies, apples, Apple, whatevar!

“Yeah, very cool, but uhh… what if people don’t read my blog and I don’t earn money?”

And THAT’s the mistake that most bloggers make, people!—NOT following their passion! They all mostly just fall in into the blogging or make money online niche, not because they love it, but because they think it’ll make them money! My good friend Onibalusi has written a whole article on this entitled “Stop Following the Blogging Crowd. Reform!”.

If you find yourself swimming with all the other fish, go the other way. They don’t know where they’re going either. — Leo Babauta, zenhabits.net

Oh yeah, who says you can’t make money from niches other than blogging? You blog about apples? Blogging about apples doesn’t stop you from making money!—Sell a book about apple recipes, create apple pie T-shirts, and much more; try something different!

And what if you don’t get visitors, you say? Blogging about your passion doesn’t stop people from reading your blog either! I would even read about apples, if the blog post is simply remarkable! :P

If you’ve just started a blog, don’t worry. I didn’t have much visitors when I started blogging either. You need to be patient… which kinda brings be to my next point…

Patience

2760610793_d77ffcdc00_mAhhh, patience.

It’s truly a virtue.

Patience… is essential if you want to become truly successful. You need to sit back, and wait.

If you have noticed, most of the successful blogs in the world has been around for more than 1 year!

Problogger – since 2004
Copyblogger – since 2006
DailyBlogTips – since 2006
BlogEngage – since 2007
Lifehacker – since 2005
Digital Photography School – since 2006
Mashable – since 2005
Zen Habits – since 2007

Is the patience worth it?

Yes, it is.

You definitely need some sort of plan before you start blogging. Most people just start blogging without any goals in sight which is bad idea. You should set mini goals.. realistic ones you can reach.

      Agreed! :)

Mini goals are great! I agree that bloggers should set goals, but in my opinion, those bloggers blogging for a hobby don’t need to.

      Cheers!

        Hey Gloson,

I’ve read your blog post and I think the (3 P’s) is a creative title, it truly attracts the reader.

For me as a (Blogger) I think blogging can be done in 2 ways,as you said, like making money or blogging for fun.
Talking about goals , if I were you, I will put (Mini- goals) but also (Long-term goals). Mini goals are the ones you can reach faster than the long term goals, but the doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put goals for the future to achieve.

I think this article will attracts a lot of readers and it’s very well- written. Great examples, illustrations and also quotes, all support the article.

Way to go and stay creative!

Even if you’re blogging for a hobby, it doesn’t hurt to set some FUN goals (and practice SMART goal setting in the process). For example, my current goal is to win the WBB guest posting contest and win enough to buy a new camera – the results of which I’ll share with my readers via more vivid photos and HD video! :)

I’m not out to make a million dollars with my blog. Maybe I SHOULD be, but I enjoy blogging for the fun of it and I’m not prepared to make my hobby into a real job. I have one of those! ;)

          Hi Holly,

True, Holly. FUN goals are great for a hobby. :)

Wow, you’re buying an HD camera from your winnings for your readers? Great blogger you are! Can’t wait to see your photos and videos in HD! :)

Agreed Holly! The most important thing you should know about blogging is that it definitely shouldn’t be “dreary drudgery” ;) . Whether you are blogging for a hobby or a profession, it should always be fun! :)

Oh, and by the way, What HD camera are you going to be buying? :D

          • (May 12, 2011 at 9:19 am) | Permalink

I’m hoping to, Gloson, yes! I’m looking at a couple of Sony and Canon models – still debating which particular model I want, but I want higher resolution than what I have today, easier to travel with, image stabilization (Sony usually does that really, really well – and I need it for a little point-and-shoot, because my hands shake too much when I use anything lighter than an SLR), FAST (most digital cameras I’ve owned fall really short here), good in low light, and I’m really debating the merits of that waterproof model – it gets mixed reviews, but might be fun, too. Trying to stick to something affordable – not to exceed contest winnings plus “birthday gift money” already earmarked for something fun. So I’m definitely NOT looking at a DSLR here (would love to be, one day), but just something that takes great pics with minimal fuss. Oh, and the ability to switch between manual and automatic settings would be a big plus, although nowadays I can usually just leave it on AUTO and do fine.

              Hi Holly,

Sorry for the late reply. Was very busy with lots of stuffs. :)

I’m not really sure about HD cameras because I’ve never owned one (although I really wish to someday). Yeah, Sony and Canon are good brands and they probably would take some pretty decent photos and videos.

I think the best way to find out what model to use is to go to sites like Digital Photography School and find out what cameras they recommend. Or, look up user reviews of models you’ve considered. :)

Good luck with your contest. I really hope to see your new HD photos and videos! =)

              Cheers,

Don’t tell my husband, but most sites seem to be recommending his favorite brand. Which is great, but I already know from using it that it doesn’t have enough image stabilization to work well for ME. HIS pictures always turn out clear; mine, slightly out of whack. That’s the problem with reviews – unless they’re really detailed (and preferably, show detailed specs AND sample photos for comparison), it’s just really hard to know which will have features YOU particularly want and need! *sigh*

Great post, Gloson. I agree with all of your points except for passion (will get back to it later). Yes, we need a plan before we begin, but do remember these things :

Not all sailors started out with a plan ; In the ancient times, they didn’t think about plans. That’s not because they didn’t know what plan is. That was because they didn’t know how the world was, how dangerous their adventures might be. It doesn’t matter, if you don’t have a plan. You can still accomplish great things. And the blogging journey would be more thrilling and exciting if we didn’t have a plan at first.

Patience is important, I agree with you on that. Now, let’s talk about passion. You see, passion has a gray area. Sometimes, we can define it as motivation, other times it is different (it can defined as something that will keep us from quitting). Anyway, I am not getting much into it. Thank you for the great read ! Best of luck with the contest.

      Hi Jeevan,

Thanks for the big comment! Really appreciate it. :)

I do partly agree. Without a plan, you can still do great things. I believe bloggers who blog for a hobby don’t need a plan, but bloggers who want to make money and become successful *do* need a plan. Otherwise, they won’t know if they are moving forward, or not. Even if you don’t have a plan, blogging still can be thrilling and exciting.

Passion, is your rate of interest for blogging. If you don’t have passion, you most probably won’t blog very well because you don’t like blogging. In order to write top posts, you need to be passionate so it would not sound dull. And if you blog about your passion, you’d have a lot of fun and be happy blogging.

Thanks! Good luck to you too in the contest. :)

      Cheers,

    Hey Gloson,

This is a wonderful post. I am happy to see that you have cast here the three vital Ps, the really vital ones I mean. The most obvious one is the Passion which we are taught of so many times. Whenever we are in the business of starting a blog and open to advice, the most prominent thing we hear is to blog with passion.

But that is not enough. Planning and patience are far more important than passion itself. As you say here, Problogger is one of the top blogs that gives Darren a full time income and is the blog which almost every blogger regularly reads. But it has took about 6 years to achieve this status.

Oh patience is a virtue :)

Great post and good luck with the contest, I am glad to support you.

    Cheers,
    Jane.

I really wanted to be like Problogger, but I then realized that his blog has been around for 4 years already, and that really inspired me to be patient. :)

I agree, when it comes to planning one needs plenty of patience. Although planning is important, as I see it, it’s more important to adapt easily to every situation. Rarely, plans have come out how I’ve planned them, and often I had to adapt my plans.

REally awesome post. thanks for sharing. I totally agree. I think all 3 are critical especially patience. I see people giving up after 2-3 months because some guru told them they could make it that fast. It took me over 6 months to start seeing an income and it took a long time after that to build it up to where it was my full time income.

Gloson, I’d ask “Where did you get so wise, so young?” but we’ve had this conversation. Will you hire me when you are CEO of the world?

These are two of my favorite tips, really – first, you have to have SMART goals (specific, measurable, ambitious/achievable, reasonable, and time-bound) and second, life’s too short to waste it doing things that feel like dreary drudgery. The opposite of dreary drudgery? Passion! It’s the current buzzword, but it’s really “that which brings us joy.” We’re only 100% certain of THIS life; and it has a fixed span of years. To plod away at something that brings no joy is just sad.

LOL, I guess it was because of my beloved mom. She gave me a lot of attention when I was 0-2 years old, and taught me flashcards and stuff. I think that answers your question. LOL :P

Agreed! You need to set SMART goals, and life is too short for dreary drudgery. Did you just invent that word? :)

        Your parents are exemplary, Gloson.

And while I did not invent the words “dreary” or “drudgery,” I MAY have invented the phrase. It’s SO true – you spend too many hours of your life working for it to be dreary drudgery. That’s a sure sign you need to change careers or get a new hobby or make new friends, because it’s a sure sign that hours of your life are being tragically wasted.

Yeah, tragically wasted, Holly, but sadly most people are still doing dreary drudegery and not their passion, probably because of fear, or risk, or some stupid nonsense.

But I strongly believe, if there’s a will, there’s always a way. Surely it is possible to get out of dreary drudgery if you persevere. :)

    Hi Gloson

Thankyou so much for all those kind words about me and my lavender blog. There were a few bloggers who questioned my choice of topics and if I would still be around in a year…..or run out of things to write about LOL

Definitely all the points you have made are necessary to continue on that path to eventual success. I have had bumps in the road and not being a techie, sometimes I have seen the need for changes in my blog but have to wait to get them done for me. Have a few more that I hope to get done soon; as found some more products and want my shop front to be shown differently too.

For me it has always been: have a plan (which I had before I started blogging seriously) passion, perseverence and patience. Without them it is too easy to get discouraged and give up!

Thanks for another wonderful post Gloson. Well done. You must make your Mother proud :-)

Very true, Patricia, perserverence is important as well. It’s like the foundation for passion. Without perseverence, passion slowly dies.

I really like to encourage others. I want to see them succeed in whatever they do. I believe that is your goal as well, by what you said in your 3 P’s. I have had Passion to help others, but I have slacked on the area of planning. I think maybe I have been so patient that I failed to plan.

You are an amazing kid! You’re just 13 and you write very well. I’m really amazed.

I totally agree with the 3 P’s you have highlighted in this post. You can never succeed your blogging if you don’t have these 3 P’s. Really such a great post you have.

    Hi Gloson.

First of all let me congratulate you for writing so well at such a young age. You have very well summarized the path to become a successful blogger in 3 steps in the form of 3 P’s. You are right, that these 3 Ps apply to real life too.

Any task requires planning as without planning everything will crumble like a pack of cards. Once a definite plan is ready, a blogger should develop passion to build up blog. It takes some time for business or blog to establish and give returns. Success does not come overnight after a day’s hard work. Patience is required. Good Luck and have a great day.

    Hey Gloson,

This was a wonderful entry into the contest!

I haven’t seen you around the blogosphere very much. Maybe I have been looking in all the wrong places. ( ; I have seen you around twitter a bit, so I thought I’d stop by and give you my support!

It’s really awesome that you put this piece of work together. Above anything I believe a passion will take you futher than anything else. The amount of passion you have for what you do will be what seperates you from the next cat. Both might have passion, but have different levels of passion. There have been many thing I started, but eventually gave up on. All because my passion wasn’t there to keep me pushing in the right direction.

When you truely have a passion for what you do people will be able to see it from a mile away. Guess what? I can see your passion from a mile away! ( :

Wish you the best of luck!

    God bless,

Great article! But is it possible to abuse the three P’s. Like planning? Patience and Passion I’m ok in those departments…..but do you think it’s possible to over plan?

Well… I think (saying from prospective), it’s probably the content

However, humans are very interesting things… Most people on the web like to judge a web or blog by it’s cover… Therefore, the first thing first is to get the attention of the ppl of the web

First, your blog has to look nice, simple (subjective), AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE for your blog fans or readers understand how your structure of your blog works as soon as they enter in…
If your readers do not understand how your blog works in the first few seconds or minutes they’ll lose interest immediately and push you away…. Therefore, as I said it MAY look simple or complicated but for as long as it is understandable and nice then it’s okay.

Second, after having to catch your bloggers or readers eyes now is to catch their hearts as well… Always have a catchy phase at the beginning of your page or something that the readers want to see… If you were to enter into those popular sites or blogs you will realize that the first thing that you see is something that you wanna see or something catchy (then again it doesn’t apply to all)

Third, is your contents… always always have a good content either a nice story that people can’t wait to listen to the following one or something you give out for your fans to download or share or if you wanna you can come out with your own ideas. But whatever it is make it fun or exciting for your fans to anticipate your next release so that they’ll come to your blog for more….

Forth, finally (i think so…) some blog and web keep in contact with their fans so that they’ll be closer and stuff like that…. Something like a shout box you can chat to them about their complains or hear about their suggestions… or even just have a empty talk…. it would be good as well….

Oh… Also don’t forget to always update your blog… it’s not good to let your readers wait for so long and then they lose interest and it’s also no good that if you update in an irregular timing…. Try to make it at least a regular timing like once a week or once every two or three days :D

Gloson, you’re truly an inspiration. I learn something from you every day (or nearly so). I wish the world would – I’m convinced it would be a better place.

I hope that 2012 brings you and your family all the best! (Maybe you can finally get your mom blogging, too?)

Good luck in all you do – not that you have ever needed “luck.”

Adding to the 3 P’s is the power! Power to make your blog effective and efficient. Take a chance to chose what mode or tone you like or else you gonna be elsewhere. To become successful is to have goal and with that the precious P’s will be the main ingredients.
