Blog commenting has recently gained a lot of momentum. There is still a substantial percent of newbie blogs that aren’t receiving any comments, but almost everyone in the blogosphere is crazy about commenting.

Don’t take it the wrong way; I mean the craze is for good, almost. I say “almost” because there are still a few bad practices with blog commenting that are not serving the purpose. Let’s leave that aside, since it is not the scope of what we are talking in this post.

This post basically answers your question: “Why should I comment on other blogs?” and I am pretty sure that I will convince you if you are thinking hard and long about starting to comment on other blogs. So I basically give you reasons that tell you why you should comment. Let’s dive in.

PS: Throughout this post I imply commenting to be a commenting practice where you add valuable and thoughtful comments and NOT comment spam (both automated, that is using a blog commenting software or done by humans).

Networking

This is the NO. 1 reason I would start commenting. There is nothing beautiful than finding new people in the niche and getting connected to them. In the blogosphere, everything is about sharing and making friends. So commenting just works for this purpose.

Targeting high traffic blog sites for blog commenting will surely do great. There You have a lot of people to network with.

Reading

Blog commenting takes blog reading. I mean, you cannot leave valuable and thoughtful comments on other blogs without reading them first. And, you cannot scan too!

Blog commenting therefore encourages your habit of blog reading. That is so good. Reading other blogs keeps your updated with hot topics in your niche, hot tips and other things. Plus, reading other blogs inspire you to write great posts; they are excellent sources of blog post ideas.

Writing

Do you know that your writing improves a lot depending upon your reading? That is true. The more you read the better your write. You learn new vocabulary, various styles and writing patterns when you read variety of blogs.

Establish Authority

Do you think that you can establish authority only in and through your blog? Not at all. Of course, your own blog shows your expertise. But that is not the only place to prove yourself.

Blog commenting is an excellent way to establish your expertise. All you need to do is add value and help people out with what you have got. When you comment on a blog, do not forget to add your two cents, if you have any.

Browse through the comments and see if anyone has raised a question that is not answered by the author or anyone and you can try to help. I have gained a handful of loyal readers and subscribers through this technique.

This is no blackhat technique or a trick; but if you genuinely help others you will get noticed. So this is one strong reason that you should start commenting.

Backlinks:

Finally, I cannot go without saying this. I meant this when I started this post when I said blog commenting is getting crazy – that is for this fact! Yes blog commenting helps you build backlinks.

Remember, you are allowed to enter a url in the comment form and most blogs now have commentluv plugin installed. So you can enter a url in the comment form and give a link to one of your recent posts for a comment you leave. And, most blogs with commentluv plugin are do-follow blogs; so you build backlinks.

No-follow or do-follow – more than that, you build a lot of backlinks to your homepage and various other pages of your choice from your site through blog commenting.

Takeaway: The Good Practice-

So you know the benefits of blog commenting. You want to start that right now (I insist that very much). But have some good practice while you head over to it.

1. Do not leave spam comments.

2. Do not leave comments in a hurry that do not add any value to the post.

3. Do not be offensive. If you have to disagree with the author, do it politely.

4. Look at commenting from the view point of building relationships rather than building links.

It is basically common sense!

So what are you waiting for? Have I convinced you enough to start commenting on blogs? Show me the start of your blog commenting campaign by leaving a comment here!

Maintaining a blog over the long haul can be tough, especially during holidays and life’s inevitable transitions. One of the most common concerns among faithful bloggers is the fear that we won’t be able to keep up with a regular posting schedule. We’ll fall behind, the internet will delete us, and we’ll be forgotten forever.

I want to challenge you to add even more blogs to your repertoire, however. That’s right – more blogs. But don’t worry, I’m not going to add much in the way of a time commitment to what you’re already doing. I just want to suggest a potential traffic and backlink strategy that doesn’t break any rules. It’s entirely white hat, socially acceptable, and even socially responsible.

I call it “spreading yourself around in the cloud.” You can do this in just a few easy steps.

1. Start your own Tumblog by setting up an account at Tumblr.com. Tweak your profile with your pretty face and biographical information. Choose a nice theme and do some basic setup work. Add a link back to your blog in the navigation if you wish, but very few people will ever click it.

2. Start a Posterous blog as well following the same basic pattern. Name it whatever you like. It can even be something like “Bob’s Lifestream,” though I would only recommend this if your name is Bob.

3. Start a Blogger blog. Yes I know how inferior to WordPress it is, but stay with me. You want to be liked by Google, and they tend to like Blogger whether the rest of us do or not.

4. Start a WordPress.com blog. Even if you have a self-hosted WordPress blog, set up a free .com blog as well. Again, shine it up with a nice free theme and your standard profile photo.

5. Start an Amplog at Amplify.com. This one is key. After you’ve set up your Amplog, install the bookmarklet or browser extention of your choice. As you go through your feeds, browse BlogEngage, and do your general reading, post links to Amplify and allow it to automatically cross-post those links to your other four new blogs. And here’s the cool part… Amplify your own blog as well.

Isn’t this the kind of double-posting that creates duplicate content, hated by search engines around the world? No, this is simply syndicating your own blog across multiple platforms. With the dawn of the social age, we’re seeing the death of “blogging engines” and the rise of “social networks” but the names don’t change. Instead of having a WordPress.com blog, you now have a WordPress.com profile with which you reach out to other faithful WordPress.com users. The same is true of the other blogging networks as well.

I’ve seen quite a bit of blog traffic coming back to my blog from Posterous because some people read the latest headlines from all of the Posterous accounts they’ve subscribed to. They don’t subscribe to my blog, but they see my link because they’re following my Posterous profile.

So if you’re interested in spreading yourself around in the cloud and drawing more traffic, you need at least five more blogs, and there are probably other viable services as well. If you know of one, post it in the comments.

What do you think of this blogging/networking/marketing/traffic-driving tactic?

I’ve been marketing online for about three years now and have learned many interesting techniques on how to generate traffic to my blog or website. The main idea is understanding how to take advantage of the marketing median were given and how to use it without being overwhelming or overzealous.

Many times we under estimate the power we have on our own blog to market and promote. In today’s article I would like to look at ways to increase interaction on our blogs and also outside of the blog using other websites or social communities.

Write well and write often – When starting to market your blog you have to remember consistency is what your visitors are looking for. This is both regarding content and how often your writing. Making sure you write often is of most importance to an active blog. When writing try to ensure high quality in your content.

Take advantage of your comments – If you have regular visitors that are expressing their opinions in the comments field make sure to build on these relationships and make a reply to them. Follow your readers back to their blog when possible and comment on their blog. be proactive and try to build a community around your blog comments.

Template Design – Ensure your template is easy to use and navigate. Readers and other visitors don’t like messy blogs. Keep things tidy, neat and make sure the visit is pleasurable! Don’t have annoying pop ups or anything like that. If you must, place a nice add in the said bar like I do and leave it at that!

Take Advantage of your Blog Roll – Start trading links with bloggers that have traffic related to your target market. This could potentially be a major form of targeted traffic to your blog! Link to other blogs your readers might find interesting as well. Don’t worry they will visit you again you’re not going to lose readers.

Do your research – Making sure your content is true and reliable is so important in today’s’ competitive blogging environment. Make sure to research your information and be accurate in what your writing. This is a great way to build a very good reader base that returns for more articles in the future.

Understand your target market – here at blog engage it’s pretty easy for me to blog for you guys. Now I’m not a strong writer but at least I understand what you all want to read and that’s blogging tips or simply articles about blogging. When visiting my blog I try to provide information that is of interest to the general population of blogging. Make sure to provide your readers information that is beneficial to them.

WordPress Plug-ins – Add plug-ins to your blog that will encourage comments. Add the Top commenter’s plug-in, commentluv and similar plug-ins that encourage active readers and commenter’s to place comments on your blog. Comments can bring in a lot of traffic so try your best to encourage the readers to comment.

Use cool images- try and find unique and cool images that apply to your articles. Don’t go overboard with image but if you have something to show the reader make sure it’s a good image and not some random Google image search image. Don’t add images to fill a lack of information… ensure it’s relative to the article at hand.

Search Engine Optimization – Don’t forget to SEO your blog titles and Meta Tags, SEO is a great form of traffic and if done correctly can generate you a massive amount of visitors. Try to be very specific with your topic title and Meta tags so your traffic is in fact looking for articles that relate to their search! Targeted keywords will help you keep the bounce rate down and allow for better indexing with Google!

Tag your Images – Ensure you tag your images! Many bloggers are getting an extreme amount of traffic to their blog from Google Image Search. When you upload your images to the article tag it and apply a description.

Become Timeless – Write posts that can be read in a year or right now and have the same meaning! I know at times this concept can’t be followed but if and when you can ensure your blog article have the timeless affect!

Link Back – when you get ideas from other blogs make sure to link back! This build traffic from that blogger in specific and you normally get a nice trackback for doing so. Some bloggers don’t allow trackbacks but the majority of us do so link to the people that influence your article ideas.

RSS Feeds – Encourage your readers to subscribe to the RSS feeds. Allowing your members to keep updated on all your new posts will help increase your blog traffic! Don’t under estimate the power of RSS feeds and from what I read over at Yan’s blog is RSS feeds are literally one of the most important resources for your blog. I haven’t had the opportunity to develop many RSS subscribers but I’m still early in my blog career so well see what the future brings!

Guest Blogging – This is a great way to build up traffic toy our own blog. Start posting articles on other blogs that allows for guest posting. The blog engage community allows for guest blogging and is always open to it’s members displaying their blogging abilities here in front of the community.

Social Networks – Make sure to join a bunch of social networks to market and promote your contest. Ensure the community is do follow and friendly. I’m a huge fan of social networking and is one the biggest reasons blog engage is such a success.

Webmaster Forums- Create many webmaster forums accounts and start posting in them. Use this method to market your blog to gain more readers! People that hang in forums enjoy reading and blogs are on the top of the list! Request Blog reviews and become an active member. I know this is time consuming but FYI I get the majority of my traffic currently from Webmaster Forums.

Contests – This is a superb way to generate traffic toy our blog or website. Create a content that create a buzz in the blogosphere. Require the contestants blog about the contest on their blog to join and this will bring you a lot of extra traffic.

Share your ideas with me and my readers. Who do you generate more traffic? What techniques are you using that work for you? I look forward to hearing from you.

Every blogger occasionally faces a flat point in traffic to his blog… that’s no reason to panic. However, the sooner you begin to remedy that, the easier it will be. There are a lot of ways to build traffic, both short and long term. Here are a few ways in which a short term boost can be realized.

Some Short Term Traffic Boosters

  • Contests – sponsoring a contest is a great way to generate a quick boost in traffic. Guest blogging, commenting, design, even e-scavenger hunts can all bring in a lot of traffic, when properly implemented and promoted.
  • Controversy – this can mean making a statement or taking a position that might be considered to be controversial, or simply writing about some controversial issue or event. Nothing attracts readers like a scandal.
  • Catchy Titles - “Officials Report Contact with Friendly Aliens” may land you some traffic from Twitter. But when visitors realize your “Aliens” are migrant farm workers, they’re apt to be a little disillusioned.
  • Human Interest – a new slant on aid to disaster victims, a story on an octogenarian returning to school for a degree or a charity fund drive for a family that lost their home can jerk at folks’ heartstrings and bring your blog more traffic.

One thing that these all have in common is that they’re temporary in nature. Once the issue has either passed or has become boring, without something else to hold them, most of the new visitors will be moving on to something else.

Top quality content, taking care of your community and promoting your blog are like the three legs of a tripod. Neglect any one of them, and it won’t stand.

Short term boosts, however, can be beneficial, for a couple of reasons. First of all, if you’re serving up quality content, that’s enjoyable, informative or instructional, there’s a good chance that at least some of those new visitors will come back for more. Second, if you offer them something special for sticking around, you may be able to keep them from disappearing over the horizon. You can let your imagination run wild on those offerings.

In the long run, the most lasting traffic will normally be acquired through more natural means.

Some Long-Term Traffic Boosters

  • Nurture – Treat the visitors you already have like royalty. Respond promptly to comments, respect your readers and work hard to deliver the kind of content they want. Protect them, and the community.
  • SEO – List your blog in blog directories; ensure your metadata tags (Title and Description) are up to par; use tags on your posts; use alt. attributes on photos and graphics; submit a site map to the search engines.
  • Comments – You’re hoping for bloggers to stop by your blog and comment, right? Doesn’t it stand to reason that you should be doing the same? Circulate around, and leave some worthwhile comments on other blogs. You’ll be able to leave a link back to your blog, and if your comment was interesting, it will probably attract some visitors from that blog, over to yours.
  • Forum posting – If you belong to any forums, place a link to your blog in your signature. Decent comments posted on the forum may well attract visitors as well.
  • Guest Blogging – There are many blogs that regularly welcome guest bloggers. Posting a guest blog has the benefit of putting your work in front of an entirely new audience, with the opportunity to attract some of them to your blog, to see more. Obviously, this is a time to put your best foot forward.
  • Guest Bloggers – You can also invite other bloggers to post guest blogs on your site. Normally, they’ll let their regular readers know where and when they’ll be posting, and their loyal readers will visit to read their post. That’s a perfect opportunity to wow them with everything you have to offer. Make the most of it.
  • Social Media – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Delicious, StumbleUpon, and a host of other social media sites all present outstanding opportunities to make people aware of your latest blog post. Don’t overdo it, though. If all you ever do is pimp your own blog, you can become effectively invisible very quickly. Post a variety of other things, and don’t forget to pimp your friends’ and contacts’ work, too. They’ll probably return the favor.

These are by no means the only ways to build blog traffic. They’re just a few of the most common methods. You should combine several or all of these techniques, for the best results.

Don’t allow yourself to get so focused on the traffic aspect, that you pay insufficient attention to the basics, though. Top quality content, taking care of your community and promoting your blog are like the three legs of a tripod. Neglect any one of them, and it won’t stand.

One thing that sets apart good bloggers from just the average ones is the ability of the former to drive traffic on a consistent basis. Driving traffic these days is easy but what counts the most is on whether the traffic that you’re going to drive is going to convert or not.

Conversion can vary depending on the goals that you set as a blogger but the bottom line here is that every serious blogger must aim for consistent and returning traffic, not just a one time spike.

In this post, I would like to talk about different things that you can do in order to get that consistent stream of traffic. But before that, let me just cover first the facts about traffic and why you need to aim for consistency.

Why Consistent Traffic?

This question is kind of like vague. It’s obvious that everyone wants consistent traffic on a daily basis but what’s a consistent traffic in the first place and how does one achieve it? To simply put it, just look at the top bloggers in the industry. They can rest or take a vacation for a week but does that decrease their traffic? Partly yes, but just because of how big they are right now, it’s more likely that the decrease wouldn’t be that much.

Getting that Consistent Stream of Traffic

Now a little bit about me and my blog. When I started last 2008 with MelvinBlog, it grew really rapidly (and of course some others grew even faster!). Just 4 months after the blog has been launched, I started slacking and thought I already had it going.

Long story short, I stopped writing and growing the blog and obviously the result was I lost some readership. That’s basically prematurely thinking that the blog has already consistent traffic. Now that story was long over and I learned a lot from it. I made sure that mistake will not happen again.

So here are now the 5 ways that everyone of us should work on to achieve that consistency. The list starts now:

1. Establish yourself initially via commenting

In the past few months, I’ve written so many articles already about commenting. I’ve always said that the best way to get known initially is to do bulk commenting. And that’s because when you’re getting started there really isn’t that much option. You can’t immediately ask bloggers to accept your guest posts and you cannot get them to link out to you so the way to go is to introduce yourself and the best way is to comment.

I’ve written a comprehensive guide on blog commenting on Famousbloggers and if you’re just getting started, I highly highly suggest you to check out that post.

2. Write for People, but build for search

These days we already know that most search engines, Google in particular, started moving into this model of ranking sites that people are reading the most. But that doesn’t mean that we have to stop caring about the basic things that we have to optimize for our blogs. I’ll be frank with you, SEO for blogs especially with WordPress is damn easy. So why not spend some time setting up things that have to be set up like the All in one seo pack, robots.txt, canonicalization and so on. Those things don’t take more than a day to complete but its long term effect can quite be dramatic.

Another obvious benefit of this is that it can be really rewarding if done properly. Some sites that really do well from search engines almost no longer need to add new content to their site because the search traffic that it gets is already worth it.

3. Establish your social media presence

This is probably one of my biggest regrets in blogging. I dived heads first into social media thinking I can get tons of traffic just by submitting each and every of my posts. Obviously that’s wrong.

Like most things, social media is all about establishing and building your connections first before reaping the benefits. These days I really get good amount of traffic from social media and that’s because I’ve used it as I should and unlike before, I already have connections. Think about it, if you’re just into a new territory and you want people to do things for you, do you think they’re going to do you that favor?

4. Set  Guest Posting Goals per month

Well if we’re aiming for consistent traffic then why do we have to guest post every month? My simple answer is that simply because there are hundreds of new readers everyday. Why do you think guys like David Risley, Daniel Scocco, ViperChill do guest posts even though they’re getting over 1000 uniques a day? It’s because of they know that there’s just so much potential out there and also plenty of untapped traffic sources to get into.

That should be it for you. 5 guest posts per month shouldn’t be that hard. Make sure to set some goal in this and it could really give you a lot of return traffic.

5. Keep Funneling your readers

Assuming you have 30-50 visitors on a daily basis, what do you need to do then? Two things, first is try to work more on getting more traffic and second is funnel those existing readers to make the most out of them.

Funneling them could be as simple as letting sign up to your newsletter or subscribe to your rss and follow you on twitter. Or it could be as complex (and rewarding) as getting them to buy your stuff or join your membership program. All of these depend on what you initially planned and how you want to execute that plan through your strategies.

Conclusion

So that’s it. Just 5 things, but as you can see it involves a lot of hard work and dedication. That’s why I always tell people that blogging isn’t hard, but just needs a lot of hard work. The fact is that people will read this but nobody will do anything which is why only really few people get traffic and eventually make money from their blog.

I hope that in this article I’ve given up some good information on getting consistent traffic and how it can be done. Remember, its not about the quantity, its the quality that you get that counts the most. I’d rather have 50 people reading me and following me over and over again than 1000 people that I’m not even sure if they’re real person or bot, that would follow me for just one day and disappear the next day. What do you think?

Blog Engage is a community where bloggers come to unite. Bloggers from all over the world submit their articles into our community and engage with one another on a daily basis.

Sometimes we get caught up in all the possibilities Blog Engage has to offer but we must work hard to remember we are here to help one another and not simply submit our article links.

Blog Comments: Yes Blog Engage is one the best places to get new comments to your articles. Blog commenting is a huge source of traffic for bloggers so they continually use Blog Engage to find new and interesting articles to comment on.
