Blog Engage $650 USD Guest Blogging Qualifying Article

I’ve won second prize in my very first online blogging contest which ended with Blog Engage’s first guest blogging contest. And my article in my contest was my very first guest post. I had no experience with good guest blogging but still I was able to survive my contest and also was able to put my post under the “TOP COMMENTED” post. Now, the question is how did I do that?

There’s nothing like a BIG SECRET for that. As I said above, it was my first guest post and I wasn’t aware of guest blogging strategies so much. So, here in this post, I’ll be sharing the strategy I used use in my first contest with my first guest post.

Choosing a blog

Basically, it depends on the blog on which we are writing. In my case, I did it in a contest. So, to participate in the contest I had to submit it on that blog only and I didn’t have any choice. It depends on the popularity of that guest blog you are choosing, blog readers count and followers count. Of course, it would not have been possible if I had done it on a newbie’s blog, where there is little traffic. There are some factors which we should take care about when choosing a blog for our guest post.

Factor #1: Popular Blog – Select a blog with high traffic. The blog should have a high subscribers and followers count. A blog which gets lots of comments on it’s most of the posts. Of course, it doesn’t mean that you’ll get a lot of comments just because all posts get lots of comments there. It’s just the first step, let’s move to the next factor for choosing a blog.

Factor #2: Relevant – Who will read our article if we post about mathematics on a poems blog? I hope you got my point. The topic we choose should be completely relevant to the blog we choose for guest posting. Or write a post with a topic which is the most popular topic on the blog you choose. I’d suggest that your guest post should add to what’s been said on that blog already, or should contradict it

These two are basic but important factors in the success of your guest post, if your goal is to get lots of comments. BUT… it’s not enough. Here comes the main job:

Writing a master piece

Choosing the topic: I know, I’ve discussed this above but I’m trying to be more specific here. It may happen that you don’t have enough knowledge about the topic that is the most popular on your guest blog. What then? One option is to do proper research about that topic and write a fresh new article with your own perspective. Or just go for another relevant topic to that blog. But I think, just a popular blog with relevant topic is not enough to rock with our guest post.

Write on a General topic and make it controversial: Suppose you write about affiliate marketing on a blogging tips blog, then it’s possible that there might be some readers who are new to blogging (I think, many Internet users come into blogging everyday). Affiliate marketing will be very new to them. Maybe there are some readers who don’t believe in affiliate marketing. So, prepare an article on a general topic when you are writing for new readers. And don’t be afraid to take a stand, for or against something, such as the pros and cons of affiliate marketing. Be persuasive, but leave room for debate in the comments. So that everyone out there can have interest and can easily understand what you are talking about. My article was about “how to make a good blog”, that was good enough for newbies and a good refreshers for intermediates. So, I was able to attract most of the audience there.

Make your article controversial. Again, relevant to the blog’s theme. A topic which is hot to get the debate started. Like a post “something vs something”. An example I’ve got in my mind just now:

If one is writing on a blog related to blogging tips then a very good controversial post would be “Blogger Vs WordPress” Or any platform. This is one of the hottest topics in blogosphere on which the debate never ends. Because there are WordPress lovers and Blogger lovers as well who will surely jump in to defend their platform. My second guest post was a little similar and I got around 280 comments there. It was on BasicBlogTips and named “10 reasons why I’ll not visit your blog”.

Note: For these type controversial posts, one needs to do proper research before saying something in front of a big audience. You should try to be respectful also for the opposing position, so that readers who disagree feel welcome to comment, too.

Work on Title: Be mysterious as well as interesting when making a title for your post. So that readers feel curious and click on your article title without moving further.

Writing skills: This one matters the most when we want to write a MASTERPIECE. I’m not saying that one needs to be perfect in his or her English. Even, my first language is not English. But by paying attention to a few basics of grammar and writing rules, we can write a better, more readable piece.  I’d like to mention two of the common mistakes which are good enough to make someone look really unprofessional and which can be seen on most of the blogs from newbies to some very good blog owners. (The following section is for newbies, especially.)

Mistake #1:  Un-capitalized ‘I’ – This can be seen on many blogs. I used tothis mistake too. But I’m glad I have a professional writer as my friend (Holly Jahangiri) who pointed this out (and many other mistakes). ‘I’ is never used lowercase when used alone or individually, “..i’ve, i’m, i..” are wrong. Correct are “.. I’m, I’ve, I…”.

Mistake#2: Short forms: “hw r u”, “I hv lot of frnz”. What do you think about that? This is our chatting language, may be. But this gives a bad impression when used in an article where you are trying to teach something. And this mistake is done unintentionally, most of the time. So, it’s easy to take care of this if one writes carefully.

A search on Google with “Check Grammar” can give you hundreds of free online tools to check grammar for your article.

SIMPLEST TIP: USE SPELL CHECK OPTIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING OR PUBLISHING.

Moreover, be specific in whatever you say. For example, you might have read some articles with words like “and much more”, “and so on” and one very common word “etc”.  There might be some readers who are completely new to the topic you are writing on. And they’ll be unable to understand that what exactly you want to say with “so on” or “much more”.

Get the conversation started

I think, now we know how we can write an impressive guest post. But here we are talking about, to get comments from maximum readers. It’s not necessary that a very good impressive post with correct grammars will get lot of comments. Here, we need to take care of few things while we write our post.

Style and Humor: Writing style is important – write as if you are talking with your readers, not giving a lecture. Give some points to encourage readers to speak their mind. Readers should understand easily what you are trying to say. Adding some humor to make your readers laugh can lead to start a conversation there – It’ll start with appreciating the humorous writing style.

Ask questions: Try to be interrogative in your article. Not only in the article but also when you get comments. Keep asking questions related to your topic or questions relevant to reader’s comments. It helps to change comments in meaningful conversation.

Social Promotion

Last but not the least, promote your post on your Facebook fan pages, Twitter wall, blogs, and any community or forum you are in. Of course, it doesn’t ends with a single share in all. I think, we need to promote out guest post in regular interval of time. I still share my two month old guest post sometimes.

This is the strategy I used for my first two guest post.

Now the question is how much comments I’ll get for this article? Do you have any idea?

Can you add more tips? I’d love to hear from you.

And you know, these share buttons are really meant to be pressed. Try them! Let me know if they are working properly.

Official June 2011 Monthly Guest Blogging Contest Post #3
Contest Article

So, you’ve spent a few hours choosing just the right topic for your next great article. You’re proud of what you’ve accomplished.  How can you gauge the reaction of your readers to your new masterpiece? How do you know what kind of feelings your article conjures up in the hearts and minds of those that read your commentary.

Are Analytics Enough?

You can track the visitors to your blog. You can even see where they go and what they choose to read. But, to really understand what it is that your readers are getting from your work, you need to entice them to join in and start a conversation about the topic at hand. There are various ways in which to elicit the feedback that you are seeking. You could take a poll, hope that people take the time to answer it, then come to your conclusions based on the answers that you receive ==> Sure, this method could be very helpful if you have the time to gather all this data, collate it, then bring it all together into some sort of visual representation of ideas.

Lets Talk…

Personally, I like the idea of being able to have a conversation with my readers. I tend to be more into instant gratification. That’s why comments are such a great part of any blog for me. I don’t have to wait to receive, process and put extensive mathematical skills to use to determine what the general reaction is to what I have written. Each and every reader has the opportunity to have their say; to really let me know what they think and feel.

How Do You Engage Your Readers To Comment on Your Blog

Merely writing an article and publishing it online on a blog or any other medium will not necessarily bring you the feedback that you desire. Even if you already have the traffic and the readers on your blog. How do you get people to leave a comment anyway? I’m going to go through 5 of my usual methods of getting people to comment.

1. Say Hello to New Visitors

New visitors to your blog or website do not know anything about you or what you write about. Fortunately, there are several WordPress plugins that allow you greet new visitors to the site and let them know about the site and how they can join in the discussion.

2. Ask Your Readers Direct Questions

Be sure to ask for the comment! If you ask your readers a question at the end of your post, you are going to more likely to receive a comment with an answer to your question. Don’t be afraid to ask for your reader’s opinion, previous experiences, etc. Remember, you are looking for feedback on what how your readers are responding to your writing. This is going to help you when it comes time to develop new material for the site. You will have a much better understanding of what interests your readers have.

3. Reply to the Comments That You Receive

Just as you have asked for the comment to begin with, you want to engage in the conversation with your commenter. People are, after all, social creatures (even if the majority of their socializing does happen online). Both online and offline, people are more likely to engage in conversation with someone who they know. Be sure to include Gravatar support to your comments to allow your readers to put a face to the ideas that they are reading. Make it personal. This will also allow your readers to recognize their fellow commenters easier when they come back.

4. Reward Your Active Participants

There are thousands of other things that your readers could be doing besides commenting on your blog. When someone takes the time to comment on your site, be sure to make sure that they are aware that their contribution to the conversation is appreciated and very welcome. Try using a “Top Commenters” type of plugin to generate a list of your most active members.

5. Follow Up on Trackbacks

When another blogger links to your content, obviously, they have most likely read what you have written. Be sure to visit their site and return the favor by leaving a comment or linking to their content in a future piece that you publish. Not only will this ensure that they remain readers of your ramblings, but it will also allow you to build actual relationships with other bloggers in your industry.

How have you been able to increase the amount of comments that you get? Please leave a comment below and share your experience with us.

The more time I spend around the web, the more I find that blogs are one of the best resources for traffic, research, engaging people, and building a profitable online business.

However, people keep asking me the same question over and over again:

How do you find blogs within a really small niche?

So, today, I decided to jot down a few of my favorite resources where I go to find blogs so that you can start engaging people who really want to hear what is going on in your niche market.

Before you run off, you need to look at your own niche, and figure out how tightly focused your site is. Think outside the box, and think about where your potential readers will be.

As an example, I have friend with a site on compulsive hoarding. On the surface, there aren’t any big authority blogs on the topic, although there are loads of keywords and searches for it. So, rather than getting stuck in a rut, if you are in a tightly focused niche, look for more general  niche blogs.

With the example above, I would look for blogs that are more general. These would be blogs on personal development, psychological disorders, and topics where you might find people who are interested in finding a cure for compulsive hoarding.

So, with that being understood, let’s get to the point of the post, and go into where to find blogs that you can get involved with:

Google Blog Search – I love Google blog search to find great topics within my niches. I like to do a search for my keywords, but also at the end subscribe to alerts for that same keyword using Google Reader for future updates.

BlogEngage – I can’t post this here, without giving credit to Brian. I have found a lot of really great blogs here, and met some really nice people in the process. He does an awesome job of providing a place to find relevant information on a huge range of topics.

CommentLuv –Commentluv is a great place to find loads of blogs within a variety of niche markets. Enabling CommentLuv on your blog will also attract other bloggers to you like flies to honey.

MyBlogGuest – If you want to find blogs specifically for guest posting, there is no better place on the planet. Loads of bloggers in just about any niche imaginable are there, and they want to share your content with their readers.

Niche Forums – I always go on and on about forums, but they are a one stop shop for anything you are looking for in a niche. Check out the links in other people’s signatures, and get to know the members. My first taste of online success was through forum posting, and still are my favorite way to brand myself, meet potential customers, and engage more people in the community.

Twitter – I find loads of blogs by following the tweets of other bloggers. The more people you follow, the better your chances of finding really great blogs.

Blogs on Blogging – even if you aren’t in the IM niche, there are loads of blogs on blogging including ProBlogger, Famous Bloggers, and more. You will find that most of the links in the comments are to non IM related blogs, since the readers are often in other niche markets.

Facebook Search -  just about every blogger I know (the good ones anyway) has a fan page for their blog. Use the search function in facebook and find fan pages and groups related to your niche. Through them, you will find top notch blogs, and some feedback from people reading them.

StumbleUpon- I love to Stumble. In fact, I can stumble for hours on end, and find loads of stuff that I would never find anywhere else.  By joining groups and carefully selecting which categories to Stumble, you will get get more out of your time and efforts.

Product Owners- More and more the affiliate products that I promote have a blog. You can usually find it tagged in the footer of their sales page. That is a great way to find targeted traffic that you know is interested in what that product owner has to say, so you have a better chance at converting them if you can get them onto your site. It also helps you to build up the relationship with the product owners. By helping their readers through comments and guest posts, I have gotten free stuff from them as well as heads up on new promotions months before other affiliates find out.

So, there you have it. These are my favorite ways to find niche blogs for commenting, guest posting, research, and just about anything else you need online.  But, I am sure I left a few out.

What are your favorite ways to find blogs in your niche? Don’t be shy.

The comments are open.

There are really lots of SEO link building methods in the internet today. All of them really work in a certain purpose. One of this is through Blog Commenting / Blog Linking.

What is Blog Commenting ?

This is a link building technique where plenty of spamming has already been done, so to make the best of it, you need to work a little harder in finding quality blogs related to your category and make an on-topic relevant comment.

So now I’ll talk about the simplest but the critical link building method, the Blog Commenting.

In this post I will give to you my view on the SEO benefits in blog commenting, and how it can give you more traffic to your site. Let me explain real quick.

There are softwares for blog commenting but it all boils down to having these tips I gonna mention. This can help you to easily find and generate quality backlinks to your website or blog.

First off, make sure that the comment widget used in the blog has a dofollow attribute. DoFollow is simply term given to websites or blog that follow the hyperlink. It gives inbound links for others hyperlink to the search engines. The internet has a vast collection of dofollow blogs, so you can find them easily.

But, HERE’S THE PROBLEM.

Some people post a dozen blog comments and link back to their homepage using a single anchor text link – using a single keyphrase such as: seo techniques

So, all backlinks pointing back to your site would use the anchor text (blue underlined text) seo techniques only. This is a BIG but common mistake.

There are two things that you MUST do to get even better results from commenting softwares and comment generators and then dominate the search engines.

Tip #1: Don’t point all backlinks ONLY to your homepage. You need to have DEEP link to your secondary pages as well.

For example, if your website contains the following pages…

index.html
seo-training-courses.html
seo-guide-videos.html

You must get backlinks to all of those pages.

Tip #2: You could get backlinks to all those three pages above using only ONE keyphrase (such as “SEO training tips” mentioned above).

This is another big mistake people make. Do NOT use only one keyphrase in your anchor text links. Let me give you an example:

index.html
anchor text link: SEO training tips, SEO guides and ideas, what is SEO

SEO-training-courses.html
anchor text link: SEO training course, SEO training instructions

Anyway, you get the idea. I hope this is all starting to make sense.

So, just to clarify… when you post comments on other blogs don’t forget to include anchor text links back to your website.

But, make sure that you use DEEP links to many pages on your website and use a variety of keyphrases when you link.

That’s about it. This one little tip could make the difference between your website being top 5 within Google or top 50.

Give it a try.

UPDATE: All Contest Comments have been restored! Any comments that were made today will be restored over the next hour or so. I’m working on it now.

Last night I was trying to convert the main blog engage website to another software package. Seeing I was only modifying this specific section I only took a back up of that main site database. Little did I know installing this script would automatically delete all preexisting tables in that specific database.

I’m not pointing fingers and if anyone is to blame it should be me. I am the admin of this website and I should had taken the back up. For this I am sorry a thousand times over.

The earliest back up I had of the wordpress blog was from Oct 21. Last night I sat in front of my computer and went back into Google cache and re posted all the comments and articles that I could possibly see.

All the Guest Blogger Articles have been restored but unfortunately I couldn’t get all the comments back. I did however get over 120 comments back into the database by manually entering them.

Some of the comments I couldn’t find e-mail addresses for so this is why you no longer see their picture. All I could get was their website url, name and comment. I also restored all of our guest blogger comment replies as well.

Due to this unforeseen incident I must extend the contest so other bloggers including yourself have the opportunity to make up the comments you may have lost. I don’t want to push it out to long because I’m assuming you are all excited to find out who the winners are.

New Contest Deadline

The new contest deadline will be November 22 which will allow all our guest blogger contestants one additional week to gain back any comments they may have lost during the last 10 days.

Please note this extension is only for marketing, promotion and comments. No additional articles will be accepted again this is only an extension for members already entered into the best of the guest blogger contest.

Being a blogger I know how you feel right now but I plead with you to be positive and look at this as an opportunity to improve your over all score and gain additional comments from your online social networking friends.

I could barely sleep last night because I was dreading this article. I’m sincerely apologetic for the set back I have caused for some of our later guest bloggers and the loss of their comments.

If you have any questions, concerns or venting please feel free to take it out in a comment below.

If you have any missing comments that are still in your e-mail please forward them to me with the article url they belong to. I will add your comments back ASAP!

Comments are a very important part of your blog.

Without comments, your blog would be so quiet until we can hear the crickets chirping.

*Chirp. Chirp*

*Chirp*

So, lets get rid of the chirping and build a good community, a good readership!

If you’ve got a good number of comments, it will make a good impression on your readers and your blog will be full of life. Yay!

So, here are some sure-fire ways that will get you more comments! =)

1. Network and make lots of friends

Networking is the key to getting more comments, which is one of the keys to building a successful blog.

Blogger friends like to help each other and comment on each other’s blogs.

Twitter is the easiest way to make friends with bloggers and other social media guys. I use Twitter and I have made a lot of friends there.

You can start a relationship by retweeting a tweep’s blog post, thanking the people who have retweeted you, and greeting them. :)

2. Comment a lot on other blogs

As the famous saying goes, “Give and you will receive.”

To get comments, you have to give comments.

When you make comments on other blogs, most bloggers will reciprocate and leave you a comment too.

It’s good to make it a habit to frequently comment on blog posts. When you comment on someone’s blog, you encourage them and brighten their day.  =)

A good start would be commenting on the blogs of the commentators of other blogs.

But, make sure you don’t make pointless, short, and unspecific comments like “Great post!” and all those. It sounds like spam and turns off people. Instead, write thoughtful comments.

And other than getting more comments, commenting on other blogs also helps you to build your brand on the Internet.

3. Reply to your commentators

When you reply to your commentators, they feel appreciated and happy because you care, and they are more likely to come back to your blog because of that.

It’s also a great way to build relationships with your readers.

When I started blogging, I didn’t reply to comments because I thought it wasn’t necessary.

But one day, I came across a blog post about the importance of replying to comments. So I started doing it, and I got to know my readers more personally and built many relationships! :)

This is one of the things I should have done when I started my blog!

4. Notify commentators of your reply using ReplyMe

I love the ReplyMe plugin! Thanks to Onibalusi for introducing this plugin to me. :)

When you start replying to comments, you should install this plugin. This plugin sends a notification email to the commentator when someone replies to his comment.

This allows the commentator to continue the conversation if he wants.

Also, I like blogs who have this plugin because I can know when a person replies to my comment without manually checking.

5. Reward your commentators: Install these great 3 plugins

One great way to encourage people to comment is to install these awesome wordpress plugins that reward your commentators.

Commentluv lets your readers leave a link to their latest blog post, giving them exposure and traffic.

Keywordluv lets your readers get backlinks – When you comment as yourname@keywords on a blog, it places a link to “keywords” instead of “yourname”. This helps you rank higher in search engines for your keyword.

Top Commentators puts a widget in your sidebar that displays your top commentators and also put a dofollow link to their blogs.

Do you know any other great comment-plugins?

6. Write a killer blog post

If you take time to write an impactful, well-crafted blog post, it will surely receive a lot more comments than usual.

The most common type of killer posts is mega list posts (like 16 Ways to Get More Blog Visitors, etc).

These kinds of blog posts also receive lots of traffic (which has a high chance of comments), and people tend to comment on killer posts too.

Besides getting more comments, writing an impactful blog post gets you more visitors, new readers, and subscribers, and helps to bring your blog to the next level. Yay!

7. Write a controversial blog post

Controversial blog posts get a lot of attention and comments.

Readers like to comment on these posts because they also want to express their opinion by disagreeing or agreeing.

For example, Ben Lang’s post on “10 Reasons Why Twitter is Bound to Fail” has received over 70 comments; and they’re not just simple comments, but quality comments!

Though, if you do want to write a controversial blog post, please remember to be respectful :) .

8. Write with more personality and style

You must write with personality and style, whether you’re writing a killer post or a controversial post!

Make sure you write passionately and expressively; be who you are.

In other words, don’t write like a robot or Wikipedia, which have no personality.

When a reader makes a comment, they are talking to you. But if you write like a robot, then you better express yourself. No reader likes talking to a robot.

Your readers want to talk to you. So, if you haven’t, write with more personality! And style! :)

9. Talk to your readers in your post

Don’t write as if there is no one reading your posts! Talk to your readers in your posts. Frequently use the word ”you” in your blog post.

You could also drop in questions like “What do you think?”, “Would you have done this?”, “…right?”, “Any advice?”, “What’s your experience?”, “Do you have more tips?” etc.

When you talk to your readers, they are more likely to answer. That’s logic.

10. Write a post to get to know your readers

When Daniel Scocco from DailyBlogTips wanted to get to know his readers, he made a blog post titled “Dear Reader, Who Are You?”. That blog post got 240 comments!

And when Chris Brogan wanted to get to know his readers, he wrote “Your First Comment on This Blog”, and that post has got over 1000 comments! Wow!

Maybe you should also write a post that lets your readers introduce themselves. Your readers like you to get to know them more personally.

11. Write a blog post just to ask questions

You could write a blog post just to ask your readers for answers through their comments.

A blog needs to have question posts once in a while. This tells your readers that you appreciate their opinions. It also fires up participation and community.

For example, Problogger’s question post titled Free WordPress Plugins – What are Your Favourites? got more than 150 comments!

You could also feature some of the best comments in your next post too!

By the way, here are some great tips for writing question posts.

12. Make commenting simple and easy

If you make commenting complicated, your readers are most probably not going to comment. So, make commenting easy breezy!

Get rid of all those mind-boggling captchas. And make sure you don’t make readers log in or register to comment.

Although doing this may cause more spam comments that you have to moderate, it’s a thing you should do to show your readers that you care, and your readers will come back again.

13. Hold a blog commenting competition

Another great way to get more comments is hold a contest (you can give away prizes like premium themes, ebooks, or cash) and make commenting a requirement.

One type of blog commenting contests is the “Top Commentator” contest; the commentator who has commentated the most in the contest period wins the prize.

Besides getting more comments, competitions are a great way to attract new readers to your blog too!

14. Comment on your commentator’s blogs

In life, we must always give more than we receive!

So when people comment on our blogs, we should return their favor and also leave a comment or two on their blog.

This helps you to build relationship with the blogger. You would probably become frequent commentators of each other’s blogs too!

15. Just ask!

If all else fails, just ask for comments! :)

This would help if you have just started a new blog and need comments.
