Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has gone with so many changes these days, changes that made us in doubt of our SEO strategies and changes just on the blogosphere right now that will alter the usual SEO practices as we reflect of it today. The way things are made now, are not the way they were made in the past. The same with the way things are being done now, will remain the same developments as ways of the future. It’s about to change and progress again once more. As a person whose job revolves around SEO, Blogging and Social Media, I am aware of these changes keeping track on these at all times.

Now, let’s get about some of the past biggest changes that we look forward to until now. Before I tell you what was happening, I hope you were aware of these changes as these are the changes that are present till now but we aren’t focus on these that much. The changes I am going to express may sound pretty old appalling, but I intent to merely make you attentive on these things. Reaching out the best SEO changes of the past in an easy approach.

Targeting Global Google on Local Search

First off, I am going to depict this important change as this happened quickly but it came very effective and successful. First you need to be aware of this, because many people won’t be.  For so many years Google has been proudly building the world seems closer by being the universal search engine as we know it. And now it happened to focus on being a “local search engine”. But you know before having local search, Google have already some other kinds of place search and local searches different from this one that we have today.

We need to recognize it thoroughly, because many will not know what in the world is happening with Google local searches and how are we going to simply qualify or be visible in it. Now, what does this mean to us? Simply, it only means that if you do not have a Google Local listing declared, your nearby local competitors will leave you behind in the dark when local consumers locate them instead of you at the peak of the Search Engine Result Page (SERPs) within Google Local Search.

Here’s the simple yet effective tip to that, claim your free Google Local listing. Fill out the listing completely as possible and then strive to get some responses and reviews posted on your listing. By just simply doing that, you will go a long way toward success in getting the top rank in SERPs from your local SEO hardwork. So easy right? But why you don’t give attention to it?

Be the Best in Yahoo and Bing

While some people become almost weighed down with the fears of the Google Panda update. I found out that in SEO we must learn to cuddle changes because changes are our friend in this evolving world. We don’t need to shift our SEO strategies if we’re hesitant to where we gonna be after implementing our strategies. The truth is, we have a major advantage because we can know how to keep up and go with the change, where many don’t know.

Bing and Yahoo! made well on their established alliance – as well as the sharing of rankings. The about 22% of the search market volume of Yahoo joined the about 11% of the search market’s volume of Bing, combining it now to manage a full third or more of the search market today. So how does this influence us? Anyway, who among us is optimizing sites for Yahoo or Bing? What went before was that many people did not worry optimizing for Bing and Yahoo because it accounted for so little chances to be visible in the actual SERPs. And it’s true!

How could rankings soar in Yahoo and Bing?  Now, pay attention to Bing guidelines. Follow the important things on Bing such as:

1. Good titles that include your three most significant keywords and your brand name .

2. Descriptions that encloses your three most important keywords.

3. Make sure each keyword appears on the written pages about two to three times.

4. Make your URL be SEO friendly URLs. This is a big deal in Bing.

In Bing, you have to look back at a bit with history of search. SEO was all about attainment of higher rankings for the most important keyword phrases. That was early in the match and back then, some people assumed that was all we needed. After all if you show up number one for the best keywords in Bing then you must turn out to be a winner too in Yahoo.

Google Instant for Instant Traffic

As a Google Searchologist, I find Google instant annoying especially when my Internet connection is slowing down. I don’t like its preview thingy. But you know, I’ve able to grasp the importance of this change and it entails that we must make our website be attractive as we can. I tend to disregard sites that look boring in the preview. Thanks to Google Instant Preview for making it for us to have a glance on the site before visiting it. Or else we’re just wasting our time. Possible visitors no longer have to click on the search listing to choose if they like our site. The small magnifying glass icon gives us preview mode that shows an outsized thumbnail view of our web page. If the visitor does like the looks of our site, they simply click on it and there you have them.

It goes like the less people who visit our site, the lower our rankings will go because Google does keep an eye on site popularity and visits.

Here’s what you can do, make your site attractive and looks really good. I have visited several sites and many websites have just lost sales in having dull and dry designs and web templates. Be sure to follow the usability standards in blogging and that of have the design of the winners – winning the visitors by clicking your site from a preview through Google Instant.

I believe our job as Bloggers with knowledge on SEO is to keep advanced in an ever changing environment and keep ourselves be not be surprised of current and future developments. There are many ways to solve it, there are many alternatives, and there are many opportunities around, so just keep up!  You want to keep yourself conscious of what is upcoming next because that way, you’ll always be able to help out your readers with state-of-the-art skills and advantages not considering of the changing search world.

Please share if you would like to add something. I would really appreciate your insights A LOT!

Wonderfully put Kira, but I must argue there a bit abt Google instant. As you said before it should be all about RELEVANT CONTENT sites should be judged by content and not by aspect. That is why Google gives those sites a disadvantage. People who go on those sites and like what they read can also leave suggestions in their comments so that the owner can improve if she/he does not have the “eye” for it.

Also I have Google instant when it tries to show results before i finish typing. Simply annoying and the list of suggestions stays open and it blocks down. I can only type again my word(s) to see the searc results.

Anyway a good contribution as always. Good insights, I’ve never considered Yahoo and Bing too much before. Gives me thinking!
    Great job!

    • (April 20, 2011 at 3:09 pm) | Permalink

Relevance is the primary factor Google search have consider, and yeah I agree with you that sites should be judged by content and not by aspect but you know, the design also has something to contribute to the overall impact of the site. This is now the role of Google instant, giving us the instant glance of the site we are going to visit. And whenever a user sees that the site is broken or having this hilarious design, they won’t waste time to visit your site, whereas having a good, attractive design and excellent performance, I believe this would really make a difference.

But anyway as you what you have said, we can tell the website owner if the design of his her website looks not really good.

Oh Yahoo and Bing have potential. With the rapid Google’s changes today which may jeopardize SEO, I think it’s time for Yahoo and Bing to have this SEO algorithm enhancement.

Thank you so much Andreea for the very insightful comment. I am happy to see you here. Thank you.

Interesting alternatives! It was all the fundamental changes, it was a natural step towards Google’s mission to provide richer search results.
We got used to local results and global search and it was interesting to note that Google has good changes in the SERPs.
Thus, in order to rank in the organic search your site needs to be optimized.

As I see it with some people in the web worrying so much with the latest updates in Google. So I’ve decided to go back and get the best from the past changes that we took for granted. I found out that the past changes have something to tell us, ’twas about Google’s mission to bring the best information to us. And as you can see, the search is richer now with so many add ons and I believe we can now do something with search literally with +1. Optimization is still on the go if not globally, try locally.

    Kira,
Nice article, very informative.I would take your advice and use yahoo and bing,I didn’t use them to the full potential. My point is very clear there is very little space for little players in the cyber world. If you have the green bills then you can take over very quickly.Content is given very little value.I hope things change for good. There is a slight difference between websites and blogs though.Content is king in blogs and you get real followers and build a genuine network for your blog.
Keep up the good work and keep us informed.

I got you, in the web we need hardwork to get success. I liked it when you say “Content is king in blogs and you get real followers and build a genuine network for your blog.” Yeah that’s really is it, blogging is somewhat for real people , a relationship betwen bloggers to blogger, and a reader to blogger vice versa.

Go on do something for Bing and Yahoo. These Google changes is for all of us to get the information we search be accessible and useful.

Thank you for your feedback. You just made my day.

OKAYYY it seems you are mister popular here Kira I’m glad to be the first one to have passed by here.

So I understand every change has a reason and a plan behind it (i don’t think Google thought one day “Hey it would be nice to do this!”). Everything has a research and some data behind it, but from my point of view it disadvantages especially beginners and some people who simply don’t have the “eye” for it. Get what I’m trying to say?

I’m simply saying that change cuts some of the traffic from those sites/blogs. Therefore if content is relevant both parties have smt to lose: owners traffic and influence and web navigators the content they were looking for. Improvements can happen (if the owner is also open to suggestions) and design/aspect and whatsoever can suffer drastic changes.

As I see it, that change is mostly a downside measure and honestly I don’t even use it. It doesn’t even work for all sites.

Regarding Yahoo! and Bing: well I see your point there. Google is making too many changes too fast and sometimes overlooks some aspects. What can we say? They are humans and world wide web is Big. I am of the opinion that there should exist a basic algorithm, a solid base that should never change and the changes of later should rely on it. That would be a way to prevent extreme ups and downs of navigation and SEO. Maybe Yahoo! will see in it an opportunity. All we can do is keep “clean”, have nice-clear&friendly “OVER HERE!” signs (i mean of course keywords and labels) and provide damn good content, useful too (sorry I see many sites that don’t tell much but are very popular so…)

My pleasure to be here. If it’s something good I stick to it. No need to thank me just keep up the good work. :)

On Yahoo & Bing, you said “Make sure each keyword appears on the written pages about two to three times.” Here’s something important I learn from an SEO dude I hired, “always put the keyword in the first sentence, or in the first paragraph and second in the center of the written content and finally the one in the last sentence or last paragraph.”

Although, I’m not an SEO expert, but I do believe what this SEO dude said as he pointed out that is how those content in ehow.com rank high in search engine for multiple niches… which actually out rank ezine and hubpages in the new Google update…

    Hmm… any thoughts?

    • (April 21, 2011 at 12:53 am) | Permalink

@BadBlogger: I understand why that guy said so. When your content is being scanned the keywords/tags don’t help much. Many sites can have the same tag. As for when scanning the search engines realize your content is really about what you claim and if it’s (keyword i mean) throughout the article then you got a stronger visibility for the “Crawlers”.
Andreea Fanita recently posted..Now you’ve done it!

    • (April 24, 2011 at 8:21 pm) | Permalink

and your SEO Dude was right! Keyword is one of the factors being considered in Google algorithm. The actual content on your site has everything to do with your search rankings. What he did corresponds to keyword density and Google weighs sites also according to keyword density.

But you know, there’s always limits of repetition of words in content to avoid keyword stuffing. Google no longer gives good rankings to pages employing keyword stuffing

    Hi Kira,

Found this post very useful and learned some new tips. Especially the things about ranking in Yahoo! and Bing. While it is true that people lament on the Panda, why don’t they take advantage of this time to boost their rankings with Bing and Yahoo!

Most people don’t pay attention to anything else apart from Google. Well Google is not the only search engine out there, but it has tantalized the web space, I can say that much.

This is the second time I am reading about the usefulness of Google Instant, but I am not completely making use of the features. Thanks for reminding me.

This is such a good post; my best wishes and complete support are always there for you.

    Cheers,
    Jane.

Well Jane we can be sure of one thing: If Google is more used by ppl, more popular and so on then Yahoo! has something to learn. They need to promote themselves more, improve their capacities and offer more to users without losing their essence (e.g. Google disturbed some ppl with G.Panda).

Ofc we have smt to learn now, which we unfortunately we find out only when smt goes wrong, that there are others “in the biz” who could help us boost to the top.

As for using Google features, if you were not using them then some of them are really use-Less, not use-Ful, like I find Google Instant, which previews websites. Instinctively ppl look for easier ways to do smt so it gives you thinking. If ppl barely use the features or acknowledge their presence then their function is questionable. But you made some good points there! :)

Very nicely put information. I don’t give much though to Yahoo and Bing, but according to the latest statistics they are catching up on the search market. On site factors like keyword density , Good titles help, but nothing beats well anchored back links :-) and that has being a constant as long as there being search engines.

Good question Andreea. Backlinks are considered a vote for your site. Quality backlink is being considered especially in Google as one of the major factors in ranking. Just to share, the four factors are keywords, content, links, and social media. And you are right there, blog linking is will get you more, more visibility in the search engines. Backlinks has also been considered in Yahoo and Bing but most expert found it with less significance when optimizing for these search engines. Primarily, you are right with keyword density , Good titles, and tags. Anchor text backlinking, i believe is most effective when done properly and careful linking to sites with good rank. Anyway, anchor backlinks, a sure hit.

It’s hard to tell which one should you adhere to, and where should you keep an eye on with. I definitely agree with your words in regards to Yahoo and Bing. Although these search engines can’t really keep up with Google, they still possess a substantial amount of traffic to your site, and besides they’re not that hard to deal with! I’ve even got one blog on the top pages of both Yahoo and Bing in just a matter of days. Moreover, only a few people keeps this thing into consideration. Therefore, it would typically be easy to be the best on both Yahoo and Bing with your niche.

I really don’t understand much about SEO. However, recently, Google announced its recent change on its search algorithm. It affected even some major content providers on the web mainly because of content redundancy and the ever-growing industry of content farming.

When I write blog posts, I don’t really look into the keywords or the keyword density as you know. Maybe that’s the reason why my page rank never goes up. Lol. Anyways, I’m still thankful that some search keywords bring visitors to my blog. :D

Great tips. I think it is funny how many people want to diversify by having more than one site, but still continue to rely solely on Google for traffic. Optimizing for bing and yahoo are really great. I often get more traffic than from google for certain keywords.

You’re definitely right James. Maybe it’s time for them to get the best in Yahoo and Bing Optimization. Glad to hear you’ve got traffic from them. I found out lately that Yahoo’s good in lead generation if you have a low budget in advertising, they produce small business websites but have a good overall ranking.

This is only my point of View,
I did hard work for SEO for my blog and what I measure among major search engine? There is no doubt that Google is the leader among them and Yahoo is lika a 2G connection in the 3G period of time because Yahoo could not be detect backlinks and takes so much times to decided. I did live experiment my mostly new created articles google index whithin 1 min. while yahoo takes so much times even one week even one months but still I am struggle for Yahoo because that is a challenge which is life about. and Bing’s result is good for me.

I got you shadabiitr. Thank you for sharing your views. You have a point there that everyone should also consider. I have noticed that too in Yahoo and most sites that rank organically are those with good on page optimization. As what I’ve mentioned in my post Yahoo is particular with tagging, keywords and domain.

Anyway, I used Yahoo whenever I target small niche websites for my lead generation. I guess Yahoo don’t have a consistent indexing schedule in the web thus we find it really hard to have SEO for them.

The reason why many SEO specialists disregard Yahoo.

Although Google is one if not the best search engines running, people shouldn’t forget about Bing and yahoo. When it comes to getting traffic to either your blog or company websites, it is a mistake to pass up on engines like Yahoo and Bing. While everyone else is trying frantically to gain ground on Google SERPs you can be flying under the radar with the other search engines and enjoy a nice flow of traffic.

In my early blogging days I really focused more on Google since it was, of course, the most popular engine. I don’t always gear my blog towards engines because sometimes it takes away writing FOR the reader. However, when I do feel a post if very beneficial to someone, i’ll really make an effort to make it search engine friendly. I’m also slowly working my way towards Bing and yahoo and their search engine criteria.

I got you Jeremy, good writing does not add extra words just for the sake of word count something. Each word carries purpose and meaning if as you said writing for writing FOR the human readers. You’ve got it and that’s really a good practice anyway.

Also I saluted you for optimizing for Google, I believe that when you target Google, other search engines somehow follow. Thank for again. I wish all the best in your blogging and SEO endeavors.

Thanks for the great insights Kira! I’m just starting my blog and have a lot to learn about SEO and how I can boost my traffic. I’m seeing some progress though, and it’s mostly due to the some of the principles you’ve laid out here. Something that’s always rung true with me is to write/blog about your passions. Blogs or any creative content just seem to be much better when peoples’ hearts are in it. Thanks again!

My site has not been optimized for Yahoo and Bing. Thanks for your post. I now learn how Yahoo and Bing optimizes my blog. Thanks for the share. And also I am just now hearing Google Instant. I will soon try them off and get better results to my website. Can I know whether Websites like Link exchange will help to increase my traffic to my blog? Or only SEO is the best method? I enquired about this to many but Feedback was ‘SEO’. I don’t know why they recommend SEO. Do you have any idea between using Linkexchange websites and SEO?

    • (June 1, 2011 at 1:22 am) | Permalink

Hi there Arhun, glad to have your comment in my post. First off, link exchange is one of the SEO tweaks so it is part of SEO. Yes Link exchanges could help you get traffic but not that massive,. Link exchanges should be done with utmost relevancy and quality,. and it is not a good way to initiate your site with Google.

Google viewed reciprocal linking very, very low in importance.

Google absolutely loves inbound link where the link is from a site that is relevant and complementary to your sites, especially if that site is regarded highly by Google already.

Take this. This is what Google has to say:

“Excessive link exchanges, could “negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results.”

So for now the best thing to do is to focus on good quality content and then look at using social networking to drive visitors to my site having thought like “ If you have good content, then other sites will start to link to yours”.

Interesting Article! It was all the fundamental changes, it was a natural step towards Google’s mission to provide richer search results.
We got used to local results and global search and it was interesting to note that Google has good changes in the SERPs.
Thus, in order to rank in the organic search your site needs to be optimized.

Hi Kira! Thanks for asking my opinion on your article about SEO. I am not an authority when it comes to SEO because I just started my curiousity on the internet and blogging as my hobby not very long ago, but I do agree on what you said about the use of good title and the impact of using the right meta keywords to rank higher on the SE’s. May I also add that content is always king with the SE’s as well as the avoidance of plagiarism in order to rank better and higher with them. In addition, I believe that the proper use of SNS and web aggregators can further drive more traffic to a website and, of course, the overall construction of the site itself. Hope I was able to contribute a bit on your SEO topic, Kira. Regards!
