There’s no limit to what you can accomplish with a little persistence (or a lot). I think I my persistence could be confused with OCD. I’m one of those weirdos who just can’t quit. Even when it seems totally stupid to keep going, you’ll find me there, chugging along feverishly.
I’ve been this way most of my life. It’s one of the reasons why my husband calls me “The Finder.” I have a gift for finding lost things. That’s because I have nothing against looking everywhere, no matter how bizarre the place or impossible it might seem for an item to be there.
I’ll look and look…and look until I finally find what was lost (my mind). 90% of the time, I can recover almost any lost item. It might take me a few minutes; a few hours; or even days, but I’ll persist. I’ll even look in the same areas over and over again – I know it’s quite ridiculous, but for some reason, it works.
Honestly, I don’t think it’s because I have a gift, or because I’m special – I seriously believe it’s the sheer persistence; it’s simply the fact that I don’t give up.
I know several bloggers who had the makings of an A-Lister, who quit before they could get to the level they wanted. For whatever reason, they just couldn’t handle the continuous battle that blogging can be.
I won’t lie and say that there aren’t days that I don’t think about quitting. When I think about how many hours of my day I would get back, it’s quite tempting to just disappear.
But then… I think about the potential that’s hidden within my blog. I think about what my blog could be in the future. That’s what propels me along. It’s so easy to get caught up in today only. It’s so easy to allow that to overwhelm me and cause me to forget why I started blogging in the first place.
There’s too much at stake. Blogging allows me to leave my mark on the world – I don’t know about you, but that’s major. That’s the reason I started teaching years ago; that’s the reason why I write. I know how powerful helping and inspiring others can be.
I know how valuable of a contribution each of us has to make in this world. Quitting would void all of that.
Most of the successful bloggers are so, not because they were extra special or extremely gifted – it’s because they didn’t quit. It’s because even when they wanted to, they thought about their goals for the future.
Yes, if I quit I’d have more time to do other things. But honestly, if I look at the big picture – if I think about which activities would take its place, aside from spending time with family, there’s not much that’s worth it or that can produce the same results for me. The time would still pass, but what would I have to show for it?
I’ll tell you what I want to show for it! My vision! My dream is that in 2014, my blog will be five years old and it will be among the top 1,000 sites in the world. Advertisers will be fighting over those ad blocks in my right sidebar; major companies will contact me for guidance and consultations; and I could charge any astronomical amount I want for a review post.
I’ll be able to work from home; work from the office; work from the beach; from my yaht; work from a cabin in the mountains if I want to – I’ll promise to say away from the redrum (only 80s kids are gonna get that one – sorry).
But that’s only if I don’t quit between now and then.
So it’s my long term vision that helps me persist when I want to quit – that’s how you make it through those periods of doubt. Bloggers who have a lack of vision won’t be able to make it.
When I feel like I’ve lost my will to blog – when I can’t think of anything to write – that’s when I kick into “The Finder Mode” – that’s when I start using my gift to find ideas in the strangest of places. I’m not afraid to look under a rock (I’m sure there’s some way I can relate worms to blogging). I’m not afraid to look under the sink or behind the stove. I’ve got tons of personal experience stories to share, so I’m bound to find something, if I just persist.
So… how do you persist when you feel like quitting? What is your blogging vision that keeps you going?

Great insights Kiesha, probably the feeling of quit blogging comes to everyone, some will face it and many will be left behind, I’ve seen those who actually quite during their first year of blogging, it’s kind of sad feeling when I open their blogs and I found a blank page! To me it’s like a friend pasted a way!
So…. Glad you made it

Great post (as always), Kiesha !
Persistence is definitely important in blogging. I think the 1st year is the hardest year of blogging. If you can survive the 1st, then you are ready to go. For me, Satisfaction has always been the motivator. Blogging, to me is a hobby. I started blogging because I didn’t have anything to do. I think satisfaction can be the biggest motivator to blog.
I have felt like quitting blogging because I couldn’t really think of any ideas. But then, I came up with a new plan : To look around my school and life. Suddenly I had ideas popping out of now where (Example : Few days back, I wrote one of my ideas on blog engage – comparing a seed with a blog). To me, Persistence is determination and will to work Hard. Thank you for the great read !

Although I am a fresh new blogger, I started working online about a year and a half back. Most new bloggers give up fast. They think they will earn money fast and once they realize how hard it is they just give up.
The image you have in your head is similar to the one in mine. I don’t strive that high but I will not give up.
When my hubby teases me asking how much did you make today and I say $5 I always say “but I know I can make it”. Of course it is not about the money but having a dream like yours is the thing that will keep us going.

This is a truly great and inspiring post. Makes us not want to quit when we feel like it. Thanks for sharing your inspiring story.

Hi Andrew,
I’m glad you found this inspiring – I think every blogger goes through phases where they question why they started blogging and why they should continue, but the thing is – no matter what, don’t quit. Switch up your tactics if you have to, but don’t throw in the towel.
Hi Keisha,
Being persistent is most of the time a good idea, but sometimes you would be better off just to move on and start doing something else, not everything can be rescued by sheer persistence and ambition.
But having this characteristic can help you in almost anything you do! It’s something that sometimes helps me too, to move one and keep doing my thing although there is no light at the end of the tunnel… just yet.

You’re right that blind persistence alone won’t do the trick. You can’t just keep doing the same exact thing and expect it to suddenly start working. Some changes do have to be made.
I sometimes have this problem too, want to quit from blogging, but fortunately my passion is so big, that i will always come back to my blog.
When i feel i want to quit, it is usually a “pause” and i took a break which is very important for my own health and my blog.

Thumbs for this way of thinking, and to me it is absolutely a positive attitude. I myself have been in several situations before (not just blogging) that made me come close to quitting and right there and then, I find a light at the end of the tunnel. Persistence is really what keeps many going and moving on. Unfortunately, it is something that is not tailored for everybody, hence the reason why many promising people just drift away with no trail. I like Justin’s words, “never surrender” or don’t give up until there is nothing else to do. When that happens, persists and start over again, you are bound to get it done… Easier said than done.. but it is still a “fighting” spirit that must be present somewhere, just look harder

Being persistent is a must for any blogger hoping to succeed. It’s easy to give up or find some convenient excuse not to continue. It’s really too bad that some of the bloggers I came into the arena with have packed it in, but this is a tough profession that doesn’t fit everyone’s lifestyle.
On the bright side there are bloggers like you and those here in the comments that are consistently working to reach a higher level of success. When I first started, I called this my last career and that holds true. We have to continue to do what’s necessary, even when we don’t feel like it.
Keep rockin!

When I was reading I had an idea all the time floating over me: dreams.
I think you started your blog having in mind your dreams. But you realized that blogging was not the easy way to reach the goal. Well, maybe it is time to sit and think. It is really difficult to get your dreams came true. But, if you want to develop a life in writing, at least a year or two, you have to get other incomes. You are a very talented writer. I advise you to take a look in other ways or topics. We are in a globalized world, but curiously the local topics are important. So you do not have to quit blogging, it is maybe just looking in a different way the same things.
I hope be helpful Kiesha, because your article really touched me. Be good!

That’s what separates the A-listers and successful bloggers from everyone else – persistence. If you’ve listened to interviews, many of them tried and failed, tried and failed over and over again. But they didn’t give up – they just said “Ok, that doesn’t work – let’s try this.” Sometimes it takes awhile to find something you’re passionate about, then a lot longer to find more people passionate about the same things. But if you hold out and don’t expect a million dollars to float into your lap in two months, then you will eventually find the right thing and become successful with it.

I took up blogging mainly to learn about myself and try and help me develop myself. I’ve been at it for under a year and with rarely any feedback it sometimes feels like working in a vacuum. In addition, as well as putting in the work (unpaid) you also put a lot of yourself out there to people you’ve never met with the constant threat of negative criticism. With such an uphill pursuit, it’s easy to want to give up.
What keeps me going is posts like yours and the fact that there is noticeable progress in my life. Being a blogger kinda forces you to reflect and think about events in your life rather than cruising through life on auto-pilot.
