Blog Engage $650 USD Guest Blogging Qualifying Article
I’ve won second prize in my very first online blogging contest which ended with Blog Engage’s first guest blogging contest. And my article in my contest was my very first guest post. I had no experience with good guest blogging but still I was able to survive my contest and also was able to put my post under the “TOP COMMENTED” post. Now, the question is how did I do that?
There’s nothing like a BIG SECRET for that. As I said above, it was my first guest post and I wasn’t aware of guest blogging strategies so much. So, here in this post, I’ll be sharing the strategy I used use in my first contest with my first guest post.
Choosing a blog
Basically, it depends on the blog on which we are writing. In my case, I did it in a contest. So, to participate in the contest I had to submit it on that blog only and I didn’t have any choice. It depends on the popularity of that guest blog you are choosing, blog readers count and followers count. Of course, it would not have been possible if I had done it on a newbie’s blog, where there is little traffic. There are some factors which we should take care about when choosing a blog for our guest post.
Factor #1: Popular Blog – Select a blog with high traffic. The blog should have a high subscribers and followers count. A blog which gets lots of comments on it’s most of the posts. Of course, it doesn’t mean that you’ll get a lot of comments just because all posts get lots of comments there. It’s just the first step, let’s move to the next factor for choosing a blog.
Factor #2: Relevant – Who will read our article if we post about mathematics on a poems blog? I hope you got my point. The topic we choose should be completely relevant to the blog we choose for guest posting. Or write a post with a topic which is the most popular topic on the blog you choose. I’d suggest that your guest post should add to what’s been said on that blog already, or should contradict it
These two are basic but important factors in the success of your guest post, if your goal is to get lots of comments. BUT… it’s not enough. Here comes the main job:
Writing a master piece
Choosing the topic: I know, I’ve discussed this above but I’m trying to be more specific here. It may happen that you don’t have enough knowledge about the topic that is the most popular on your guest blog. What then? One option is to do proper research about that topic and write a fresh new article with your own perspective. Or just go for another relevant topic to that blog. But I think, just a popular blog with relevant topic is not enough to rock with our guest post.
Write on a General topic and make it controversial: Suppose you write about affiliate marketing on a blogging tips blog, then it’s possible that there might be some readers who are new to blogging (I think, many Internet users come into blogging everyday). Affiliate marketing will be very new to them. Maybe there are some readers who don’t believe in affiliate marketing. So, prepare an article on a general topic when you are writing for new readers. And don’t be afraid to take a stand, for or against something, such as the pros and cons of affiliate marketing. Be persuasive, but leave room for debate in the comments. So that everyone out there can have interest and can easily understand what you are talking about. My article was about “how to make a good blog”, that was good enough for newbies and a good refreshers for intermediates. So, I was able to attract most of the audience there.
Make your article controversial. Again, relevant to the blog’s theme. A topic which is hot to get the debate started. Like a post “something vs something”. An example I’ve got in my mind just now:
If one is writing on a blog related to blogging tips then a very good controversial post would be “Blogger Vs WordPress” Or any platform. This is one of the hottest topics in blogosphere on which the debate never ends. Because there are WordPress lovers and Blogger lovers as well who will surely jump in to defend their platform. My second guest post was a little similar and I got around 280 comments there. It was on BasicBlogTips and named “10 reasons why I’ll not visit your blog”.
Note: For these type controversial posts, one needs to do proper research before saying something in front of a big audience. You should try to be respectful also for the opposing position, so that readers who disagree feel welcome to comment, too.
Work on Title: Be mysterious as well as interesting when making a title for your post. So that readers feel curious and click on your article title without moving further.
Writing skills: This one matters the most when we want to write a MASTERPIECE. I’m not saying that one needs to be perfect in his or her English. Even, my first language is not English. But by paying attention to a few basics of grammar and writing rules, we can write a better, more readable piece. I’d like to mention two of the common mistakes which are good enough to make someone look really unprofessional and which can be seen on most of the blogs from newbies to some very good blog owners. (The following section is for newbies, especially.)
Mistake #1: Un-capitalized ‘I’ – This can be seen on many blogs. I used tothis mistake too. But I’m glad I have a professional writer as my friend (Holly Jahangiri) who pointed this out (and many other mistakes). ‘I’ is never used lowercase when used alone or individually, “..i’ve, i’m, i..” are wrong. Correct are “.. I’m, I’ve, I…”.
Mistake#2: Short forms: “hw r u”, “I hv lot of frnz”. What do you think about that? This is our chatting language, may be. But this gives a bad impression when used in an article where you are trying to teach something. And this mistake is done unintentionally, most of the time. So, it’s easy to take care of this if one writes carefully.
A search on Google with “Check Grammar” can give you hundreds of free online tools to check grammar for your article.
SIMPLEST TIP: USE SPELL CHECK OPTIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING OR PUBLISHING.
Moreover, be specific in whatever you say. For example, you might have read some articles with words like “and much more”, “and so on” and one very common word “etc”. There might be some readers who are completely new to the topic you are writing on. And they’ll be unable to understand that what exactly you want to say with “so on” or “much more”.
Get the conversation started
I think, now we know how we can write an impressive guest post. But here we are talking about, to get comments from maximum readers. It’s not necessary that a very good impressive post with correct grammars will get lot of comments. Here, we need to take care of few things while we write our post.
Style and Humor: Writing style is important – write as if you are talking with your readers, not giving a lecture. Give some points to encourage readers to speak their mind. Readers should understand easily what you are trying to say. Adding some humor to make your readers laugh can lead to start a conversation there – It’ll start with appreciating the humorous writing style.
Ask questions: Try to be interrogative in your article. Not only in the article but also when you get comments. Keep asking questions related to your topic or questions relevant to reader’s comments. It helps to change comments in meaningful conversation.
Social Promotion
Last but not the least, promote your post on your Facebook fan pages, Twitter wall, blogs, and any community or forum you are in. Of course, it doesn’t ends with a single share in all. I think, we need to promote out guest post in regular interval of time. I still share my two month old guest post sometimes.
This is the strategy I used for my first two guest post.
Now the question is how much comments I’ll get for this article? Do you have any idea?
Can you add more tips? I’d love to hear from you.
And you know, these share buttons are really meant to be pressed. Try them! Let me know if they are working properly.

Hi Abhi, you learn fast! I can’t believe that you just started guest blogging based on the results you are getting. I like you tip about doing research because this is where a lot of bloggers fail. Poor spelling and grammar will get a guest post rejected for sure too! I have one pet peeve that I see some bloggers doing that drives me nuts. They put a question mark at the end of their title when they aren’t really asking a question. If I see that most of the time I won’t read the post. LOL! Not in this case though, it’s a good question with a great answer! Keep up the great work and I’m sure you will go far and win more contests. Hope you migrate to WordPress with your winnings.

That would be a great use of his winnings – but then again, Abhi does well with Blogger and it’s working for him. I’m sure he has some great plans for the winnings. (If he saves up what he won from his last contest, and keeps adding to it, I’ll bet I know what he plans to do with it!)
As for your pet peeve, I think that’s one of those “regional issues” I mentioned in my post – and I wonder if the logic behind it is something like this – the writer hears, “Write conversationally, like you talk.” And then forgets that to make that work, you have to adjust your writing for the fact that there is no audible inflection, as there would be in speech.

That’s right, Holly! But what I discussed with you recently is forcing me to switch over to WordPress now. But I’m sure I’m gonna save some money for late. Let me know if you know any host who accepts debit card.
You said very right about “they write like they talk” and that makes the writing a little weird sometimes.

Thank you for you appreciation. This one is my second contest. I will work hard for this one as well. I hope to get little support of yours.

Ms Ileane, please do let me know if you know any hosting provider who accepts debit cards. As I’m a student, so don’t have a credit card. That’s why I didn’t buy my blog’s domain from a popular website. And yes, I remember you suggestion about switching over to WordPress. But it’d be little difficult for me and it’ll take some time. But I’m working on it, already.

Look up what sites accept Moneybookers https://www.moneybookers.com/app/directory.pl?c=HOSTING and you can link your debit to moneybookers I think, which I know many Indian blogger use instead of Paypal. (Now Skrill not Moneybookers). Or else I do all my blogging transactions through Paypal.

That’s really going to help me. Actually, I’ve got one more hosting provider that is BigRock.com. It is an Indian service (I’d be able to make them understand easily) and the price is also very cheap.
But thanks a lot. I’m going to have a look what you suggested.

The only reason for getting so many comments for your guest posts is: You are controversial. I don’t think with ONLY controversy one can’t stand out from the crowd, in fact you need to be a problem solver instead of controversial. BTW you have a long way to go (you’ve written only 2 guest posts till now).

Have you visited Abhi’s blogs? He’s a great problem solver! (Though we’d both be grateful if someone could explain why sometimes Facebook sees graphics and adds them to links in status, and sometimes just adds an ugly url.) Controversy leads to polarity – and everyone has an opinion. The more diverse opinions are possible about an issue, the more likely it is to lead to comments. Or the meater the basic “general” post is – for example, his first guest post had a huge list of tips for good bloggers and blogs. LOTS of things to talk about in comments, beyond, “Thanks for the tip” and “Let’s move on!” You want comments and return visitors, let your readers have a voice – encourage them to come back by making sure they know they’ve been heard.

Well, I think my old friend Deepak Mankar ( http://popgoestheslop.blogspot.in/ ) might vouch for me here – I didn’t know him at the time, but he found my Blogger blog (probably back around 1998 or 1999 when Blogger was new and still in beta, owned by Pyra) and one of my first posts was my own attempt to figure out this “blogging” thing. In order to have something to write about, I attempted to define “blog” in terms I could understand. A while later, I went “vanity surfing” and found my name mentioned in the HindustanTimes, in a column called “Quite a Take” – you can imagine how stunned I was to see myself described as a “veteran blogger” by this tech columnist. That not only made me chuckle, it probably inspired me to step up my game and KEEP blogging, just to be worthy of the title.

April 28th, 2012
That’s very nice, indeed! You know, my mom used to say that it’s easy to find friends to console you when you’re down, but a true friend will celebrate your successes as they would their own. I thought she was being weird, at the time – I thought most friends just stuck around when things were good and happy. But it’s true – as long as they’re just “good and happy,” that’s easy – but some will run when you’re down, and even more will run when you’re celebrating an achievement.
I think that stems from the subconscious notion that if you succeed, that’s less success left in the cosmic pool of success for them. It’s a weird notion, isn’t it? But I think that’s what jealousy is – some twisted idea that you win = I lose. Maybe, for some, it just throws their own woes into sharp focus, and once you begin to think negative thoughts, it seems to attract negative things. But if you can feel true joy for someone else’s wins, then I think you’ll succeed in life, overall.

You’re right about that! I declared “Never again!” on obligatory reciprocal tit-for-tat (titillating phrase that doesn’t mean what you think it does) blogging/social media/shameless promotion techniques YEARS ago.
Sounds harsh, doesn’t it? Horrible. But you can never keep up. You make this deal with 50 others – and then what? You’ve no time left for your own life. Those “you comment on mine, I’ll comment on yours” groups all sound good, in theory, but they’re a disaster. On the other hand – the ones that say, “Comment on at least three that came before, then post your link” have it right. They work so long as everyone pays into them, and you may get 3 or 50 comments in return, but you’re never stuck having to give our a thousand just to keep up.
Numbers alone are meaningless. And I don’t know many bloggers or social media “professionals” who can truly calculate ROI on anything. If it’s your business, you need to learn how to measure ROI; if it’s your hobby and your fun, you’d better avoid doing things that turn it into a life-suck.
Now, having said that – does it mean I never reciprocate? NO. It means if you ask me nicely for help, and I can give it, I think it’d be lovely if you’d do the same for me – but I’d kind of rather pay my dues FIRST, and not end up in everyone’s DEBT.

Alan mentioned a good one – challenge people to see who can have the last word on the topic. Now, to play this out fairly, they have to stay ON TOPIC and they have to add to the discussion. For example, “I think that the best way to get a million comments on a blog post is to write a controversial, one-sided post about a cherished pop star and accuse him or her of a shocking secret.”
Discuss.
Or, if the post itself is not terribly controversial, challenge readers to add their own tips or fill in any info you failed to cover. (And definitely phrase it that way, because (a) it invites critique from people who might otherwise hesitate to hurt your feelings; (b) it invites people to feel superior; (c) it sounds nicely humble – okay, you could actually turn this one on its head and declare your post to be the ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EVERYTHING and claim you’d already HAD the last word, but that works better if you already have a reputation as an arrogant jerk and you’re just DARING people to take you down a peg.)
Discuss.

Hi Abhi,
The contest craze is all over you this year! I am tired and done with it just after a month!
For a person who had his first guest post; you did really well. I would agree with the things you say here. But what I think really worked for you is that you had the right marketing skills for blogging. You marketed your post really well. And that showed well in the number of comments. And yes, I did get notifications today the comment count is still on the rise!
One thing that helps a lot is having a network of people that are ready to help. And networking has to be a constant process. You have to be familiar with them, their work, their blogs and the likes to have them over to your blog too.
This is definitely an interesting entry! Good Luck with the contest!

Lest you think I’m joking about that:
Two Armadillos’ Strife
by Holly Jahangiri
Against the truck, two armadillos fought
(They lost not only lives, but tail and ear)
‘Twixt sun and rain and tire tread they rot;
And yet, Death is no sneering victor here!
See? In the putrid stinking street they lie
Crushed, congealed, their armored innards cool,
Providing shelter for the pregnant fly
Who leaves her maggots where dogs dare not drool.
The gleaming pearls wriggle–what a treat!
Joyful little maggots writhe and nibble
On fetid juice and desiccated meat
A revolting sight–no one would quibble -
But thus, within this roadkill springs new life;
Small recompense for armadillos’ strife.
Roadkill sonnet. It’s a Texas thang.

Hi Abhi,
According to me you write good, readable, interesting, and respond as well to the comments. you understand the point, but more should do it to become successful blogger.
Holly Jahangiri
March 19th, 2012
Lennart, I think it’s important to strke a good balance between “perfect grammar and spelling” and accessibility – most bloggers aren’t writing perfectly crafted prose, nor do they expect it. But readability, clarity, and a welcoming tone – something that says, “Come on, it’s okay, talk to me – I’ll answer, and I don’t think I’m the know it all expert who’s going to put you down for asking a question” is kind of “perfect” when it comes to blogging.
I hate going to a site where everything’s so pristine and magazine-like that even I feel intimidated joining in the conversation. I feel like a reader, only – and that’s fine – but that’s not interactive and it’s not as much fun for me. I will ONLY come back, then, if the prose is perfect and worthy of taking with me to the watercooler offline, to chat with real friends about it. Or if I can really learn something new from it.

Yes, I did read it. If I hadn’t my name would have been “Free WordPress Themes” or “used tires” or something similar.
It’s clear that the comments on the winning posts are monetizable since Blog Engage was giving away $650 in prize money. I guess I should have said something like this:
“Do you think that comments, in general, are both monetizable and a good use of your time?” So that means comments on all blog posts, not just the one you won the prize for.
One pro argument is that you can build connections and relationships with people who comment and later use those connections for affiliate marketing. The main con argument I hear against comment monetization is that although they’re monetizable, they’re not usually worth your time (though writing that guest post clearly was worth your time
).

I think I know what happened. I took “I’ve” to mean that you recently won the contest. Usually “I’ve” is used to indicate something that started in the past that’s still occurring, like “I’ve been blogging for a while [and I still blog today]” but it can also be used for something that happened recently. So, “I’ve won the blogging contest” would mean the same thing as “I recently won the blogging contest”. It can also mean “I’ve won the blogging contest before” without specifying which blogging contest. There are other differences between British and American English uses of “I’ve”, for example, the yanks don’t use “I’ve” possessively like we do.
So, I thought you won second place in the Blog Engage contest that had just ended, when what you meant was “In my first blogging contest, I won second prize. That contest was also Blog Engage’s first blogging contest.” It did seem a little odd that you were just now making your first guest post.

The problem I have with all this, Murray (and I get what you’re saying) is that it reduces human relationships to “can I USE this person to make money?” and the implication is, “If not, then screw it.” Sorry if that’s putting too fine a point on it.
Seems to me common courtesy flies right out the window in the blogging world – and yet, everyone seems to expect courtesy and respect to be shown to them, even as they’re “letting it all hang out” in terms of how they plan to USE others.
I find it a little disgusting, sometimes, really. Make no mistake – I’ve got nothing against doing business on the Internet or elsewhere, but the blatant commoditization of human relationships really turns me off.

Oh, dear – have I disappointed you, tbaoo? I’m always telling people they really must KNOW the rules before they break them – and I may have guessed incorrectly, but I think you do – and that your writing is designed as much to attract the attention of the grammar police as anything. (This is the equivalent of throwing an #Occupy movement and having no one come – or having everyone mistaking it for a “performance art installation” and throwing you quarters, isn’t it?)

thanks holly, this is my first contest entry and so soon after landing here at blog engage
i’m amazed at the quality and depth of participants and the blog engage community itself. i might have time to consider another entry for the next time, but the style will remain, the topic as eclectic as ever and hopefully with some humour. thanks to everyone for your support .. cheers ( an expression often used – “lob a hand grenade” )

No, no – lobbing a grenade would be walking into a room full of SERIOUS WRITERS and asking, “So, what’s so bad about passive voice?” Or starting the old serial comma debate over drinks. Or maybe, discussing the effective use of sentence fragments – and whether there ever IS an effective use that justifies a fragment or a dangling participle, or whether participle physics will ever unlock the mysteries of an alternative universe in which there are no semicolons.
