SEO,as any other industry that carries it’s activity exclusively in online, gets affected by those three agreements. Firstly, I will explain what means ACTA,SIPA and PIPA in a way that can be understand by everybody.
ACTA ( Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement ) is a agreement signed by more than 30 states. It’s trying to establish international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. It sounds innocent, but in fact , there are many consequences of ACTA that will affect the entire online industry :
- All internet providers will be forced to watch what are you doing while are you surfing on internet. If you are downloading an MP3 or a image, you can get arrested and you’ll also be charged with thousands of dollars as debt for your actions. They will keep an archive of all websites that you’re visiting and they can restrict your access to internet or you can get arrested.
- If you have some warez on your devices (laptop, phone, mp3 player, tablets) you can be discovered when you are trying to pass the border. As a consequence, the devices can be destroyed and you’ll also need to pay thousands of dollars to the state.
SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP Act) are bills in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. If this agreement will get approved and implemented, websites like Facebook, Google and Twitter, will get forced to watch all the content and to prevent the free flow of information. While the biggest social networks owns a lot of resources that can keep them alive during the agreement, a big part of blogs, video/photo/music sharing websites and a lot of small online businesses will be gone, deleted by the internet providers.
The opponents of SOPA and PIPA are presenting DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) as an alternative that already exists for SOPA and PIPA, and they consider that this is enough for the moment.
How ACTA,SOPA and PIPA will affect SEO industry ?
- Firstly, almost all SEOs that are not working as professionals SEO for companies, will be gone. Why ? Because the websites that are working for , will be deleted by the internet providers. When the companies are taking the lead, the small SEOs don’t have any chance to get some jobs and to show their abilities.
- You’ll be unable to promote a website using keywords that are used copyrighted by the companies.Everything will be copyrighted !
- You must be very careful to websites that you are promoting and you must inspect everything twice, because you can have some copyrighted content on your website and you can get punished for a image, a phrase that may be the motto of a company, a video that may have a copyrighted sound on it’s background or something else that can be copyrighted.
- You can not use anymore free SEO tools that may be vital for you as a small SEO and that can help you a lot in your approaches of promoting websites.
- You can not use anymore free stuffs like templates, backgrounds, ftp clients. You’ll need to buy everything.
- Social Media Networks, social media bookmarking sites, dofollow blogs, dofollow forums, directories and many sources of backlinks will be gone forever. Even if some social media networks will be still alive, you’ll not be able to use their entire potential, because the free flow of information will disappear and the internet as we know it today will never be like now.
- Even BlogEngage.com (yes, our network) will be threatened by those agreements. Blog Engage provide for bloggers a network that allows the free flow of information, like many other networks.
Imagine a life without all those things that makes your SEO life so easy…
Websites like Wikipedia,Reddit, Google and WordPress had protested against SOPA and PIPA. As you can see, those four websites (that can be considered the main pillar of online community, had protested agaist SOPA and PIPA because those agreements are threatening their activity and their users. WordPress is the most used blogging platform, Google is the most used search engine, Reddit is one of the most popular social networks for webmasters and Wikipedia is the largest network that provides information from any category. As you can see, those networks are used by each one of use and all the webmasters will be affected by the censorship of these networks.
There are many SEOs and SEMs that are receiving a good income from promoting websites on these networks. After passing SOPA, PIPA and ACTA, their income will be 0(zero) and their jobs will be gone. This is another part of how will get SEO affected by those agreements. There will be just a few online jobs that will allow you to get a serious income from blogging, promoting, building backlinks, getting visitors and writing articles or creating videos/sounds.
In my opinion, those agreements are a way of asking SEOs if they can live without internet businesses. This is unimaginable for me, because I’m used to have all the resources that I need on the internet and to use them. This thing will be impossible if those agreements will be accepted!
After reading this article, just think for a moment and tell me in a comment that you agree them and if you imagine how will be your life without all those things that makes your life easier. If you think that those agreements will not affect your activity, just tell my why and we will discuss about that and about your opinion. You’re free to say everything you want till those agreements will be approved and applied by the governments. Hey,
I didn’t know about PIPA.
You said it right, this will make our SEO life easy because there will be less competitors.
I’ve seen, some people are supporting SOPA/PIPA but some are not.
It will make our online life a bit difficult but do you think we should STOP SOPA just because it will make our life difficult?
We should try to understand the other positive side of these bills. May be, there are less GOODs than BADs. But we cannot neglect to look at that.

YES, Abhi. Yes we should. As with CPSIA (that badly-crafted bit of Congressional crap that purported to “protect our children” and actually did little but put small businesses out of business and give the keys to the hen house right over to the rooster) we have laws today that protect intellectual property. We need better ways of enforcing them. We don’t need MORE laws – certainly not vague ones.

Very true, Holly We need better ways not new laws. There are all the necessary laws present, already. The problem is in the way of enforcing.

Hi Niceblogger,
I do not think it will affect us any that much in the end, when the politicians get it all, will not there be any agreement.
It will affect us. Belive me !

Lennart, you are wrong. It will affect us in many ways, some obvious, others not so obvious.

Typical situation of politicians and pressure groups getting involved in things they don’t understand. I would be surprised if this actually gets anywhere in its current form.

I don’t think that you need to be surprised, because the big companies can do anything for getting their profit to the maximum point.

The real problem with SOPA and PIPA is that they are too vaguely written – leaving them open to broad judicial interpretation – which leads to fear and uncertainty in the Internet marketplace. They don’t actually create new copyright laws, but they do have a chilling effect on free speech, largely because they make it possible for corporations with big lawyers and deep pockets to shut you down without due process or any practical recourse.
As a creative writer, I should be all for these laws – God knows, I’m tired of having my work, my writing, my intellectual property stolen! But I’m also unwilling to compromise on the issue of free speech. We have already compromised with “protest zones” and other nonsense, in the name of public safety. But this is solely to benefit large corporate interests – I don’t think so.
Some of the dire predictions that have been flying around, though, are unlikely. Copyrighted keywords? I think you’re referring to trademarks – and we have that today. You can’t copyright an ordinary word or idea or even a title. You may be asked to cease and desist if you try to compete with Disney for keywords like “magic kingdom” right NOW. The only difference is, they can’t shut down your ISP when they get your ISP to shut YOU down (due to DMCA’s safe harbor provisions).
The only way to stop an act like SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, OPEN, or any number of laws being proposed around the world right this minute to stop IP theft is to STOP STEALING IP and to stay vigilant and alert to new laws that will affect us (bonus points if you can explain why none of these proposed laws were making headline news). I realize a lot of people don’t think it’s a big deal to download stuff you didn’t create, didn’t pay for, and don’t have a right to (e.g., creative commons license). But it’s a BIG DEAL if that’s how you make your living. I actually had someone argue with me and try to convince me that they would buy my books IF they liked them after they read them. That’s like going into a restaurant and saying, “I’ll pay you after I’ve eaten – IF I like the meal – and if you don’t let me? I’ll never eat here again!” To that, I say, “Go cook yourself.” (Yes, I do know how to punctuate that sentence properly.) If you don’t believe this is a HUGE problem, then go search Google with the following keywords: “stephen king” AND “free pdf”

All these things won’t influence only on SEO, but on the whole Internet society and people in general. I hope that these laws won’t be accepted
Sopa will affect everyone. Blogger, not blogger…it doesn’t matter. Everytime a law like this comes around, it hurts the users of the technology. What SOPA WILL NOT do is stop piracy.
That’s right …will be almost useless against piracy.

While I believe that there should be a form to “protect” copyright infringements, I think that the way the SOPA as it looks, may seriously hamper the overall efficiency of the internet… It comes to a point that I have to think if when writing a post, I can or can not use say the word “Apple”…
All these things not only influence SEO, but also whole Internet society and people. I hope that these laws won’t be accepted easily.
