In order to start running a successful Google AdWords campaign, one must be able to understand the importance of keyword matching. This is due to the fact that it is a key factor in setting up and managing high performance and cost-effective Google AdWords campaigns, which are especially useful and effective for ecommerce stores. Google allows AdWords users to control which of the needed keyword searches should be done in order for their ad to show, as with the case of keyword matching.
That is why it is important to understand how this process works, and how one can make use of it to their benefit.
Broad Matching
This is one of the simplest types of matching, and could also be the one that is easiest to understand. Broad matching is also the default match type for any kind of keyword. Keywords that are set in this kind of match will start displaying the ads on a wide scale of variations within that keyword given. The variations that are included will touch up on singular and plural forms, acronyms, abbreviations, related terms and misspellings.
Using broad matching will allow the user to hit a wider set of data which are related to the keywords that customers are utilizing in order to find them. This match type can be handy to be used at the start of a particular campaign, especially when you are not really sure yet which keywords the customers will most likely be using when they are doing a search.
Phrase Matching
Phrase matching can be thought of as a more restrictive version of a broad match type. In this kind of match, the ads of the user will be displayed for searches in keywords which will exactly match their keywords or with the words before or after.
There are some key advantages being offered by phrase matches today. It will enable users to control their searches more closely, which is going to trigger the advertisement in return. An additional benefit is that users will more likely be paying less for their clicks using phrase matching because the keywords may have high relevance to the ad text and to what the company is selling in its landing page. And in AdWords, a higher relevance will lead to overall cost in going down when it comes to the average cost-per-click.
Exact Matching
This type of match can be understood easily as it is just simple. It means that the ads which you use will only show using the exact term that has been specified, touching up no other variants. This is an ideal option to utilize when the budget for AdWords is limited and if you are looking to maximize your factor for relevancy within your campaign. Using exact matching will work very well if you want to advertise specific products and services.
Running an economical campaign is one of the most important benefits of exact matches, as the ads will only target people that are specifically seeking the product or service being offered. The user’s average cost per click could also be lowered down compared to the other match types because of keywords being highly targeted in the ads.

Hi Romel,
I have not been to adword since my account got suspended last year for reasons only God knows. While I like and appreciate this post, I’ll also be interested in knowing some of the reasons Google slaps Adword account. I know a quick answer will be to go check it out on the adword TOS page or something but … just pissed lol

Hi Enstine,
There are many possible reasons why Google would slap your Adwords account. The reason might be relating to ‘clickbank’ links. Clickbank does NOT comply with AdWords policies, and Google bans any links to clikbank, with immediate suspension of the account. Also, some AdWords accounts are sampled, and submitted for auditing, to make sure that they comply with policies. Until the process is completed – usually within several days – the account is suspended. One thing is for sure your Google AdWords account does not comply with the Terms of Service and Advertising Policies. For more information on AdWords suspension policies visit this link: http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/static.py?topic=28449&guide=28446&page=guide.cs&hl=en_US
Hope this would answer your question.

Hi, Romel! Great article! I have a question, though. How do you know how much should you pay for an ad to be shown in Google’s first page when searching certain expressions? How do you know how much your competitors pay?

I’ve never really looked into exact matching for adsense before and maybe I should. I currently use broad match but I’m wondering if my page ctr would improve with exact matching? Thanks for your insights.
