DANGEROUS SEO MISTAKES!

We are all here to because we are involved in blogging and we strive hard to rank our posts higher on the Google search engine. To do this, we use Search Engine Optimization. While doing so, we tend to forget certain things which can be responsible for the downfall of the success in blogging. This post is not going to talk about the common mistakes, but the most uncommon and neglected mistakes which can cost you a lot! Some of them are mistakes while some are misconceptions and we will have a look at them one by one in detail.

SEO mistakes#1: Expecting fast results: Google takes time to index pages which are having lower page rank. Higher the page rank, faster your site gets indexed. Assuming you have a blog which is not old enough and has a few number of visitors, and you start your SEO campaigns. You should know that the SEO you have applied will only reflect positive results after a month or two. The real potential of your optimization can only be seen after maximum of 3 months and minimum of 2 weeks.

Keeping this in mind, you must wait for atleast 3 months after your first optimization campaign.

#2: Backlinks only from High PR pages: Most important part in SEO campaign is link building. Blogger’s can backlink each other’s website. But most of the time we choose to create backlinks only with a high PR website/blog. Doing so will result in drop in page rank your site and eventually a drop in search engine ranking. If you create quality content and build up a reader base on your blog, you will not have to worry about link building. This process will happen naturally on its own. If you are involved in artificial backlinking, in this case you must build backlinks from high PR as well as low PR pages.

#3: Looking at domain home page PR instead of “PAGE” PR: Page rank is all about the “web page” rank and has nothing to do with the domain homepage’s page rank. Most of the time when we check for PR, we tend to insert the homepage address. The homepage might have a PR of 1 while internal pages could have PR as high as PR5. In this case, we are misled by the homepage’s PR. This is important point to remember for backlinking artificially.

#4: Expecting wrong results: Once we start our SEO compaigns we are constantly watching our traffic stats. Instead of that, you should be watching your search engine ranking. Most of the traffic is recieved by the results on first page of search results. Suppose your ranking for a particular keyword is 590. After optimizing your website for certain duration, you will still not notice any increase in the traffic to your pages. A huge chunk of visitors click the results on first page. So you wont start noticing any increase in traffic unless your webpage ranks in the first page of google search. So, if you see that your page ranks 19th on search result from previous 500, then you should consider that your SEO campaign is working and going in positive direction.

You should spend more time in improving search engine ranking rather than constantly keeping an eye on traffic stats. Because once your page ranks higher and higher, the traffic will rise gradually, and as I mentioned in the first point, it will take time until you see the effectiveness of your SEO campaign.

FAST FACT: Analysis show that 99% of the visitors will click your link if it appears on first page of the search result. The first 3 links on the search result receive maximum amount of traffic. (Top 3 Ranks get hit with 63% of the traffic while the 9th result on first page gets only 2.85% of traffic) SOURCE: http://www.seobook.com/google-serp-ctr-data-search-rank

#5: Never optimize for core keywords: It is important to keep in mind that optimizing your website for core keywords such as “SEO”, “hacking”, “ebooks”, “levis”, etc will never be useful in terms of traffic. Instead you should be concentrating on keywords more specific to a niche such as “free ebooks download”, “levis clothing shops”, “hacking tutorials”, “SEO tricks” and so on. The core keywords have the very least click through rate (CTR) which even though after ranking on first page of search results will not drive much traffic to your website. People tend to search for specifics as mentioned above.

You must optimize your website for particular narrowed down niche in order to get a good chunk of visitors to your website. This will also bring down your bounce rate which is an indication that people get what they are looking for. Ofcourse this is a different topic and bounce rate depends on the content you have.

#6: Failure to write a proper meta description: Many a times the web developers/ bloggers tend to forget that meta description makes or breaks a company’s overall reputation. When people search on the internet, meta description is something that will be visible to them. Failure to meet this requirement is equal to failure in attracting visitors to your website/blog post. From the SEO point of view, a proper meta tag must contain atleast one occurence of the target keyword and words related to the target keyword. Many a times this is neglected when your page rank and link structure are strong.

#7: Failure to link your own pages: It is very common to link internal pages of your website. Apart from the external backlink building, internal link building is equally important. Suppose your website contains articles such as “5 SEO steps for blogger”, “building a great blog”, “Yield money from your blog”, “Generate traffic”..etc. All these posts are related to each other. While writing something related to these topics, you can easily add a link in your post which links back to the older related posts. In this way, the rank of your homepage will begin to increase, because search engines rank you on page-by-page basis as well as on the basis of website as a whole!

Conclusion: Take your own time in optimizing your website and once you start using SEO methods for your website/blog, it will form into a habit which will make your web content more pleasing for users as well as the search engine. Keep in mind, Slow and Steady wins the Race!!!
