DANGEROUS SEO MISTAKES!
We are all here to because we are involved in blogging and we strive hard to rank our posts higher on the Google search engine. To do this, we use Search Engine Optimization. While doing so, we tend to forget certain things which can be responsible for the downfall of the success in blogging. This post is not going to talk about the common mistakes, but the most uncommon and neglected mistakes which can cost you a lot! Some of them are mistakes while some are misconceptions and we will have a look at them one by one in detail.
#1: Expecting fast results: Google takes time to index pages which are having lower page rank. Higher the page rank, faster your site gets indexed. Assuming you have a blog which is not old enough and has a few number of visitors, and you start your SEO campaigns. You should know that the SEO you have applied will only reflect positive results after a month or two. The real potential of your optimization can only be seen after maximum of 3 months and minimum of 2 weeks.
Keeping this in mind, you must wait for atleast 3 months after your first optimization campaign.
#2: Backlinks only from High PR pages: Most important part in SEO campaign is link building. Blogger’s can backlink each other’s website. But most of the time we choose to create backlinks only with a high PR website/blog. Doing so will result in drop in page rank your site and eventually a drop in search engine ranking. If you create quality content and build up a reader base on your blog, you will not have to worry about link building. This process will happen naturally on its own. If you are involved in artificial backlinking, in this case you must build backlinks from high PR as well as low PR pages.
#3: Looking at domain home page PR instead of “PAGE” PR: Page rank is all about the “web page” rank and has nothing to do with the domain homepage’s page rank. Most of the time when we check for PR, we tend to insert the homepage address. The homepage might have a PR of 1 while internal pages could have PR as high as PR5. In this case, we are misled by the homepage’s PR. This is important point to remember for backlinking artificially.
#4: Expecting wrong results: Once we start our SEO compaigns we are constantly watching our traffic stats. Instead of that, you should be watching your search engine ranking. Most of the traffic is recieved by the results on first page of search results. Suppose your ranking for a particular keyword is 590. After optimizing your website for certain duration, you will still not notice any increase in the traffic to your pages. A huge chunk of visitors click the results on first page. So you wont start noticing any increase in traffic unless your webpage ranks in the first page of google search. So, if you see that your page ranks 19th on search result from previous 500, then you should consider that your SEO campaign is working and going in positive direction.
You should spend more time in improving search engine ranking rather than constantly keeping an eye on traffic stats. Because once your page ranks higher and higher, the traffic will rise gradually, and as I mentioned in the first point, it will take time until you see the effectiveness of your SEO campaign.
FAST FACT: Analysis show that 99% of the visitors will click your link if it appears on first page of the search result. The first 3 links on the search result receive maximum amount of traffic. (Top 3 Ranks get hit with 63% of the traffic while the 9th result on first page gets only 2.85% of traffic) SOURCE: http://www.seobook.com/google-serp-ctr-data-search-rank
#5: Never optimize for core keywords: It is important to keep in mind that optimizing your website for core keywords such as “SEO”, “hacking”, “ebooks”, “levis”, etc will never be useful in terms of traffic. Instead you should be concentrating on keywords more specific to a niche such as “free ebooks download”, “levis clothing shops”, “hacking tutorials”, “SEO tricks” and so on. The core keywords have the very least click through rate (CTR) which even though after ranking on first page of search results will not drive much traffic to your website. People tend to search for specifics as mentioned above.
You must optimize your website for particular narrowed down niche in order to get a good chunk of visitors to your website. This will also bring down your bounce rate which is an indication that people get what they are looking for. Ofcourse this is a different topic and bounce rate depends on the content you have.
#6: Failure to write a proper meta description: Many a times the web developers/ bloggers tend to forget that meta description makes or breaks a company’s overall reputation. When people search on the internet, meta description is something that will be visible to them. Failure to meet this requirement is equal to failure in attracting visitors to your website/blog post. From the SEO point of view, a proper meta tag must contain atleast one occurence of the target keyword and words related to the target keyword. Many a times this is neglected when your page rank and link structure are strong.
#7: Failure to link your own pages: It is very common to link internal pages of your website. Apart from the external backlink building, internal link building is equally important. Suppose your website contains articles such as “5 SEO steps for blogger”, “building a great blog”, “Yield money from your blog”, “Generate traffic”..etc. All these posts are related to each other. While writing something related to these topics, you can easily add a link in your post which links back to the older related posts. In this way, the rank of your homepage will begin to increase, because search engines rank you on page-by-page basis as well as on the basis of website as a whole!
Conclusion: Take your own time in optimizing your website and once you start using SEO methods for your website/blog, it will form into a habit which will make your web content more pleasing for users as well as the search engine. Keep in mind, Slow and Steady wins the Race!!!

I think #3 is a big mistake that a lot of people make, lets face it, the majority of the time the backlink isn’t going to appear on the home page. So when you see a site that boasts it’s page rank, it’s not going to make a blind bit of difference if your link is on a page that has no rank at all

@Blazing minds, Indeed its a big mistake and even the top bloggers do this mistake. It was a surprise for me when they refer pagerank as something “domain only related” and then because of this mistake they start performing wrong SEO which is not going to be 100% effective at all!
@Chris, Yes it is very important today to do so! You are going no where without SEO. Atleast a few basics of SEO will help you establish your presense on search engine.
Glad you liked my post, I had put a lot of efforts into it!

Hey Salil,
Nice points, I too used to create links from high PR sites only but later on I realized that it’s not a good seo practice as one should concentrate for getting links from various PR websites, it’s the best way for natural link building.

Reeha, you should include high PR sites, but you should also consider link building with average PR sites, that gives google an indication that your site has back links from all PR categories and so, it doesnt consider your site as “black hat SEO” site. I guess you got that point already.
Thanks for reading the article.

Great post with lots of good info. Too many people new to SEO think they have to have all High PR and do not realize that they may be damaging there own efforts as this looks very artificial to the search engines. You must have a mix of high and low page rank as well as some dofollow and nofollow links pointing at your site.

I made the mistake of targeting only high pr backlink sources when I started out blogging. Before long, i realized my mistake and changed my evil ways.
The best strategy for link building is a random mix of sources and page authority.
Anything too formulaic can trigger Googles red flag.
nuclearrambo
May 28th, 2012
That’s exactly my point here. Especially for beginners, “those” great link building companies always attract them by showing off “get hundres of high PR back links” and these companies try to sell their backlinks by giving away misleading information.
WE should be aware of this.
…and there is another mistake, you can’t just accept backlinks without actually placing outbound links. If there are too many backlinks and very few outbound links, it is possible your pagerank can go DOWN.

Hi nuclearrambo, I’ve been doing a lot of reading on Google and their latest updates! I need to make some changes around here and to the ay our services works to maintain high quality. Blog Engage right now is safe because we are a community but the other sites I syndicate our customers content to may have to stop. If so it’s fine as Blog Engage is where the real value is anyways. So I’ve had to deal with a unique SEO issue and from what I’ve read Blog Engage is safe, because of it’s users and social networking element. Great contest article keep pushing you have a few days left! You need more comments

I have seen many sites that sell backlinks are destroyed because of the latest update of google. Not only the backlink companies, but also the customers who bought those backlinks are removed from the google’s index.

Among the biggest mistakes you mentioned in this post, are internal linking and linking having only the PR in mind.
Regarding the internal linking, I’ve seen pages within an authority site, ranking very poorly, because of the lack of internal linking, so I guess internal linking is a must.
Speaking about linking to low and high PR pages, I personally gave up that practice a long time ago.
I’m looking more for the authority rank of a particular page, measured by Seomoz.
Is true, many times a higher authority seomoz rank means more links, and with that comes PR, but I’ve seen also pages with higher page authority, and somehow lower PR.
Al in all, yeah, in my opinion linking should be done to higher and lower PR pages, but not without checking, the page authority also.
