It’s often said that every simple following mistake brings you closer to the success through a painful process of learning on them. However sometimes there is no room for the “misfire” and the fact of the mistake will lead to the painful failure instead of routine learning process.
Such thing happens in the business world where the innocent misleading from the managerial squad could lead to significant failures of the team and the company as whole.
In this article we will go through 9 common mistakes that leaders of different levels, nationally, background, and business concentration make to cause failure in the working mechanism. We will highlight most common errors and try to teach you how to avoid them, so that you could save time and money, and big load of trouble for yourself and the team.
1. Responsibilities and Obligations
Before becoming a manager or a leader of any kind most of us walk through the evolutionary ladder from the ordinary office worker etc. On previous jobs work ethics, responsibilities and skills are very different from the new obligations that a manager must poses. While receiving a new job offer and working as a new leader many of us forget that the job has changed and completely new set of skills effective at this managerial position.
We will provide you the finest articles with information which will guide through and teach you how to develop those crucial skills to become a successful manager.
2. Failure to Define Goals
Every successful manager must lead and guide! In order for you team to be productive and posses correct work ethics they must have clear goals for the day, month or any specific period of time. Working people must have exact vision of the end product, the clear understanding of what they are doing and for what purpose and this is the key for success.
Manager’s role here is to establish a set of specific team and individual goals. Effectively spread the work load among the workers with a proper time completion order. Manager also must align effectively team goals with the company’s priorities. All of the above advises and by using principles from Management by Objectives will bring you success as a manager.
3. No Time for Your Team?
We all know how easy it is sometimes to get wrapped up in your own pile of work and increase our availability to surrounding us people. Many times this happens to managers around the world when they are filled with paperwork and projects they need to deliver on time, forgetting that your team members must come first. By losing control over the office, your people start losing understanding of what they should be doing and how to meet the objectives, thus decreasing productiveness of the whole company. As well as trying to be an efficient manager and taking massive loads of new projects and work, many leaders hesitate to delegate work to their workers thinking that no one will do better than them. This is another reason why office work falls apart due to lack of attention from the “boss”.
Effective manager should never block time in his schedule for his office workers that may need your guidance and opinion. Establish friendly relationships with people so that you could be on top of the things even at the most critical situations in your own office. Also learn how to delegate work; it will take a big load of your neck giving you more time for the members that are under your command and provide you with a “broader-view” that most leaders and managers responsible for.
4. Failure to Micromanage
Many leaders due to massive workloads and due to curtain personal believes hesitate to micromanage their people. Missing the right balance in this area you put your company at risk by creating chances of leaving very unhappy customers. By avoiding micromanagement of projects there is a chance that people might get a wrong idea and misunderstand specifications of curtain projects, thus complete the work and leave a very unhappy client, which could lead to client and revenue loss.
Micromanagement of your team and projects is one of the most important aspects in the whole leadership theory.
5. Nothing Personal, it’s Just Business
Friendly and interpersonal relationships must have place when you work with a group of people that are targeted on a common goal. Everybody is happy when they get along especially with the “boss”. And this is a right and healthy environment, but there is a thin line that manager should never cross. Socializing and keeping positive environment helps to arrange good work, however the manager should never forget that he is a boss here and not a friend.
Keeping social ethics at the office should never bring the question up of the worker taking advantage of the relationship he or she has with the manager.
6. Incorrect Motivation
Proper motivation is truly the first thing that drives people forward, businesses to success and the companies to domination. Many managers do not have the right tools in their arsenal in order to effectively motivate individuals. The most common mistake is that managers assume that the only temporary rewards drives workers to do their best forgetting that the foundation for personal motivation and happiness is the long-term stability in monetary and benefit assets.
However every person is an individual and needs a personal unique motivation but basics are the same for the most of the people. There are many, many ways how to motivate a person or a group of people to do well in your company. The key to success is the right motivation.
7. Absence of Feedback
Failure of providing feedback on workers with a right timing might hurt you business big time. Some managers acknowledging that curtain worker doing curtain things wrong waiting for the end of the month and the review of its performance and only then they deal with the situation. In this situation the managers deprive worker from starting to improve his performance earlier, and putting at risk the whole company.
Feedback on each person must be provided regularly considering business specifications. Managers should guide in the right way person that is making a mistake as soon as they notice such.
8. Express Recruiting
To develop and implement huge projects usually a large team needed. It could be a disastrous mistake when a manager hurries up the recruiting process in order to begin the project faster and cut down development time frames. Express recruiting can bring absolutely wrong people to the team that are valuable workers but lacking specific knowledge in curtain areas. Jamming the time for work frames by fast recruitment could actually slow down the whole process.
9. Don’t Forget That You are a Role Model
Do not forget that you are a role model being in position of a manager. Allowing yourself disrespect, discriminate and show negative attitude towards higher managers or even CEO could turn right back to you with complete disrespect from your own workers. Establish respectful work ethic in your office; create rules that you would be indefeasible part of, lead by example because your people watching you.

” Absence of Feedback ”
I believe this is an important factor because it gives you some satisfaction to know that your work is appreciated some how and it can improve and enhance the quality of your work, pushing you to be better.
Without feedback everything seems redundant.

When I’ve just started my career as a manager I had some problems with feedback. Manager should build an individual approach to everyone. Anyway , every person wants to feel that his or her work is valued by manager, this also makes staff more responsible.

Thank you for the tips. I have noted that setting goals and targets motivates employees a lot. Somebody once said: MONEY IS A GOOD MOTIVATOR, and therefore, rewarding your employees with incentives such as cash will eventually have an increased performance. Taking them for a tour is another way of rewarding the most hardworking employees.
In my organization, I also noted that employees seek immediate responses to their questions. It is therefore important to give feedback to employee questions as they come. Thank you for your detailed article and synthesis.

Hi Anna,
Interesting article. I liked most of it but I can’t say I agree with your point on micromanagement. I’ve never enjoyed being micromanaged and don’t do it to my staff. Instead, I prefer to set the goals and general direction and let them make the decisions on how to get there.

These are some great management tips! I’m currently working as an engineer, but my hope is to one day move into middle-management so I actually wrote these points down. I’d say the one that causes the biggest failure (not necessarily the most common factor) is hiring the wrong people. You need people who work for more than just a paycheck.
Thanks Anna!

I would say one of the reason other reason for the business getting failed is the over analysis. People devote so much time in analysis on how to shape their strategies and how to fork out a go ahead plan plus they analyze their competitors. Whole lots of analyzing and scrutiny can make things worse which can become hard to implement. Hence one should avoid all the mistakes mentioned above for being successful in their business.
