Blog comments are important for a blog, it shows the growth and quality of a blog. It doesn’t make sense if the blog you build doesn’t have even a comment, it might be your content does not sticky enough to get your readers to leave a comment, or you have not done enough work to get your readers to contribute their opinion on your blog.

If you want to get people leave comment on your blog, first you have to know what mistakes that you’ve done, then you can avoid and don’t repeat the mistakes, and improve your blog to get more comment. You have to do something to attract your readers to leave a comment after reading a blog post, it’s not an impossible mission but you have to do it the right way.

7 Reasons Why You Aren’t Getting Blog Comments

1) You Didn’t Leave Comment On Other Blogs
Blog hopping and leaving comment on other blogs is important, you want people to leave comment on your blog, then you have to do it first on other blogs. When the blog owner sees you contribute an honor comment, then they’ll be happier to leave you a comment on your blog in return. It’s the concept of “give and take”.

2) You Didn’t Reply Blog Comment
Alright, now you’ve gotten a blog comment on your blog. You need to be sure that the commentator will be coming back on the next few days to leave another comment on your latest blog post. Be sure you reply their first comment to show that they’re respected, and they’ll be your regular readers and commentators. Never ignore even it’s a critic comment.

3) You Didn’t Use Plugin To Benefit Commentator
Nowadays, most of the people leave comment because they want something in return from you, traffic and backlinks. If you give them what they want, then they’ll be happier to leave a comment. There are several wordpress plugins which would benefit commentators such as KeywordLuv, CommentLuv, Top Commentator, and etc. Spend some times and install the plugin on your blog, you’ll see the differences.

4) You Didn’t Dofollow Link From Commentator
It goes same to #3, you need to give advantage to your commentators, reward them something for their contribution. What they want is just a dofollow backlink juice from your blog. If you want your readers to leave a comment with desired keyword link, then you might need to install a dofollow wordpress plugin to make their link dofollow. It would definitely increase the conversation rate on your blog.

5) You Didn’t Write Call-To-Action Post
Blog content is the key that makes your readers to leave comment, sometimes people don’t leave comment even your post is quality and unique because they don’t know what to comment, it’s because your post is perfect and they don’t want to just say “Great post! I agree with you!”. So you have to make it to be a “call-to-action post”, it means that you can ask a simple and related question at the end of the post, and ask your readers to share their thoughts.

6) You Didn’t Show Your Enthusiasm While Interacting With Readers
While interacting with your readers, you need to behave yourself. You can’t be rude to your readers even they critic your blog. You show your enthusiasm and good attitude, then they may be your regular readers and contribute comments on your blog from time to time. Good relationship is the key to build up health community, it could help in a long run basis.

7) You Didn’t Write Simple And Understandable Post
Many people like to write long and complicated post to show people that they’re professional, they use complicated words and sentences to write a lengthy post and they thought they’re expert in writing but they’re wrong. You want people to read your post and leave comment, then you have to write simple and understandable post that make people easier to leave a comment. You may write list post for easier understanding.

How To Get More Blog Comments?

1) Blog Commenting
If you want to make your blog to be crowded with conversation, you need to learn how to build a healthy community around your niche, then the community will be hanging around your blog and leaving comments from time to time. Blog commenting on other blogs is a good way to build up community, you may search for similar niche blog and leave a comment or two. I’m sure they’ll drop by your blog and leave a comment as well.

2) Sincere Interaction
I’m sure you did receive several emails from blogger fellows who asked question about your niche right? You should reply them sincerely and try to help them as much as you can, once you help them to resolve their problems, they’ll be your regular readers forever, or at least for a few months. When they know you can help them with their problems, then they’ll leave more comments on your blog and ask questions.

3) Know Your Mistake And Overcome Them!
You just have to know your mistakes (perhaps one of the 7 mistakes above), overcome them and you’ll be getting more blog comments on your blog. Learning from mistakes is the essential process toward success.

Wrap Up

In fact, it doesn’t matter if your blog doesn’t get more comments, only if you want to build a brand for your blog. A brand is important for a blogger if you’re serious in blogging business, it would definitely help in your future business. It’s not complicated to get more blog comments on your blog, you just have to do a little more research on what mistakes that you’ve done on your blog, take some times to fix them and improve your blog.

Are you doing one of the 7 mistakes above? What you do to get more blog comments?

    All good points, Lee. I especially agree with you on the importance of responding to comments, and doing so in a manner that isn’t rude or obnoxious. We need to cultivate an atmosphere in which our readers are comfortable sharing their thoughts, without fearing they’ll be attacked by those that may disagree with them.

    there is one way that how you can get more comments. I have personally observed that if i use words like you and me instead of SOME BLOGGER, you will get comments. This is because readers like personal interaction rather than using some 3rd party name. You consider your own example and think that what you will like more- personal attention or random mention. So, a very good way is to address your readers personally.

    One way, that I’ve found, that really seems to pull out comments is that you don’t just give every bit of information to a person because at that point you cover it so well that there’s really nothing to comment about. This isn’t to say that you are selective with your information but you do leave little gaps which are otherwise already understandable (example: don’t really need to mention SEO – everyone knows it, at least frequent website owners); this gives people room to discuss the sections further, ask questions and answer others you may have missed.

Topic of the blog plays an important role as well, sometimes scientific blog post may drive people away to leave a comment, they don’t understand the sentences you write. End up they leave your blog without finish reading the blog post. Anyway, try to write a blog post with simple words and sentences, then leave it to the readers to leave a comment.

      You’re right. When you ask a question, readers will be easier to write a comment to answer your question. Bear in mind, keep the question as simple as you can, so they know how to answer your question. Regarding the contest or prize for top commentator, it definitely helps, but sometimes the quality of the comments might not reach the level, and end up you will receive tons of nonconstructive comment. It may be true or not true, you may try to see the result. :)

    Points number 1 and 2 is a must. I mean, to get more comments to your blog, then you should check out and comment at other blogs as well. Also, if comments are coming in to your blog, then its essential to reply at them with sincerity.

    It is all about open and sincere communication. Show some enthusiasm about your blog post by entertaining or answering each and every comment being posted there by your visitors. For sure, they will keep coming back (and posting comments as well) to your blog to read more post.

    If you write something that people can relate and the content can have topics that could spur a debate, this can also attract comments.

    I agree with you on all of these as they are essential to getting more comments but the crux of it besides writing great content that in essence begs people to comment is also looking to see if they have a blog that you can read, comment on and share with your network. That is also key to building readership and comments. It is more than you did for me so I do for you. It is finding a new POV and also starting more conversations that lead to building relationships. Every comment I get on the blog, I see if they have a blog, every retweet I look at their profile, visit their site, every person that comments to a comment on a blog that I write, I look to see if they have a blog. etc.

    Building a community around you that wants to learn from you and you want to learn from them is not only what keeps the blog alive but also the blogging community in and of itself alive.

Anyway, that’s the best way in long term basis, for people who are serious in blogging, for sure they’ll take time and build a community, that would help their online business in long run.

    I agree with what Lee has written on this post. I’ve been blogging for about two months now and my first month was very crucial. I really really wanted people to read my posts in my blog. It was so hard to pursuade people to get to the point to read and internalize the points on my blog for there are times that readers cannot relate to the topic or does not really like the topic. Blog commenting is actually number one on my list that I really fail to do during the time that I started my blog. After some time, I am receiving some feedbacks, from the blogs that I have commented to, so blog commenting really helps actually to reach a wide horizon for your blog. Of course, you have to write simple quality article and create call-to-action post, make them easier to leave a comment. Redge, keep doing them and you’ll see the improvement.

    Great post, I think I’m lacking in the first one, so here I go leaving a comment!

    I’ve noticed that I tend to leave more comments on blogs that are quick to react to something I’ve left.
    I’ll leave a comment, and within minutes they will respond, and are smart and ask a question or something of me in order to get me to return and respond (which I do) which then starts a dialogue between us, and before you know it we’ve created 6 or 7 comments in a matter of minutes.

    I agree with all points, especially number 3 – we love our posts to be commented by other bloggers, and so we come by at their blog site and leave a comment on their post too, only to find out that they don’t have plugins to benefit us (as a commentator). Leaving valuable comments as well as replying to the comments from one’s post in a sincere manner is the way how others get more blog comments.

As for the plugins, it depends on what’s the main purpose of the commentator, some are really helpful to leave you a comment because they have something to say about your topic, while some are just want to get a dofollow backlinks, these commentators usually leave a comment and will never come back again. Anyway, build a community around your niche and you’ll receive more conversation on your blog for sure.

    Hi Lee. I think most people could be too busy or too lazy to leave a comment. Or sometimes we get distracted, like while visiting one website, already thinking about the next search term on Google or switching to new tab on the browser. Afterall, we live in such a fast pace society and it shows no sign of slowing down. ;-)

    Having an easy access to a comment section is a key. I have a WordPress blog/website and I too have comment section where readers can share their thoughts and opinions without creating any account. I tend to skip or shy away from sites which requires me to sign up or creating a password. Who would want to create another password just to leave a comment anyway…? :-)

Our moves are just too fast and don’t want to slow down to leave a comment or something else, most probably we just read the content, we get new knowledge then we will hunt for next information. Regarding the ease of leave comment, I’ve seen someone uses a comment software which requires people to register and leave comment, that definitely drives people off to leave a comment. As you said, nobody likes to waste time registering an account just to leave a comment, it doesn’t make sense at all.

    Great post Lee, I totally agree with you that engaging and interacting with your readers is essential to having a successful blog. Which is why it’s important to get your blog reader to leave comments. The best way to do that, just like you mentioned, is to create a community around your niche and write compelling content that would make people want to leave a comment.

    I think your point about making blog comments “dofollow” will help to increase comments on your blog. However, if you have a blog in the “make money online” niche, then many of them tend to be spam or they just care about getting a backlink.

      Regarding the dofollow, when you turn on the dofollow, then you have to spend some time in reading each comments and make sure they’re not spamming your blog. I receive tons of spam comment everyday and I spend few minutes a day to evaluate all comments.

      @Jay,
      Absolutely, making your blog dofollow would definitely receive more comments, but you have to take more time in moderating the comment because you’ll be receiving more spam comments than usual. Serving useful post would be much effective, try to write something which comes straight from your mind, as long as it’s useful and simple, then most probably you’ll get more comments.

    Hi Ka Hoong,

    I think it is also quite difficult to write good comments when there are short comments like this.. “Great posts, thx for writing this up.” I get really annoyed when I see it but usually I graciously comment back. The trouble is most people should learn how to add value and be an extension to the conversation in your blog posts or comments. Thx for posting this up. Good luck in your contests!

    Cheers :)

      @Bryan,
      Yes it’s really difficult to reply a comment like “Great post”, but most probably I don’t accept comments like this, I’ll just click “Trash” or “Mark as spam”, that’s it. I won’t approve comment which doesn’t add a value for the article.

      Thanks Bryan for your comment and support! :)

    Lee,

    One thing I would add here is for new bloggers is be patient….for comments.

    It can take several months of consistent blogging and commenting on other blogs before you start to see comments appearing on your own blog.

    But don’t give up…follow the 7 steps you outline and comments WILL appear.

      @Andrew,
      I strongly agree with you Andrew, keep writing great post and don’t urge for comments, and don’t think you can get more comments for your new blog, keep building it and follow the 7 steps, I’m sure you’ll get more comments (up to 5 comments a post) in coming days.

      Thanks for your comment Andrew!

    Hey Lee,

    Another awesome post as usual I see. :D Thanks for sharing.

    I myself have had problems leaving comments on some other blogs (probably they’re also doing the mistakes you mentioned). Hence, I don’t get that many comments. But whatever it is, we just got to keep going, right? ;)

    All the best, Lee.

    I want to add this comment of mine.

    One of the many reasons why you blog is not getting any blog comments is the blog commenting structure or form itself. I have encountered this one blog who happens to dish out or post up a good article. That article is really a good one. It offers a new and fresh information around the blogosphere. But to my surprise, no one leaves any comment at that article. I wonder why by that time so I decided to leave a good and thank you comment for his article. Until this blog commenting technical error hits me up.

    After I wrote my long comment, entered the captcha code that the blog requires to be able to comment and hit the submit comment button, a error message pop up saying I inputted a wrong code (captcha) and then after I click the ok button, the whole page refreshed and my long comment is gone. So I wrote it all over again, but same thing happened error and comment is gone. So after trying 2 times, I leave the blog without commenting although I really wanna make a comment there.

    Sometimes, it can be at the technical side. So it is really a good thing to check it as well from time to time.

    Hope this comment of mine makes sense.

      I’ve had that happen to me, Ron, and it is infuriating! Important to note, too, is that even when things have been working very smoothly on your blog, it’s still necessary to check it once in a while. Even an automatic update of a plugin that has nothing to do with commenting can sometimes cause a conflict.

      I recently discovered that all my widgets were frozen, and couldn’t be edited. After investigating, I found that it was because of an automatic update on a plugin that manages something else entirely. Many plugins (most, in fact) have to interface with your database, and conflicts are easily introduced.

      Great addition to the convo, Ron!

        You are really right on that one Doc. It’s like a regular or routine check up of blog or websites. Testing all aspects and more importantly testing its functionality within “different browsers” as well.

        Thanks for the reply to my comment.

      • (November 10, 2010 at 5:26 am) | Permalink

        @Doc,
        Oh really? I thought a latest plugin version will need to be updated manually? Perhaps there’s an option which you can set to update plugin to the latest version automatically, it’s something which I have not figured out yet, lol!

        Anyway, blog maintenance once in awhile would be good because it may causes your blog losing traffic and comment when it’s down. Sometimes latest version of wordpress would conflict with the older version of wordpress plugin.

        Appreciate that you share your experience with us Doc, we learn something new today! :)

    • (November 10, 2010 at 5:18 am) | Permalink

      @Ron,
      I strongly agree with you Ron, it definitely drives me off when I have to write the same comment twice, I experienced it before and ended up I quit the blog. Now I learn the mistake, I copy the comment I write before clicking “Submit”, at least I have a copy of the comment if technical error occurs.

      One more thing, I hate blog which needs registration to leave a comment, I’ll never do that to leave a comment, it takes long times. Doing blog maintenance once in awhile would be good, just to avoid giving inconvenient to readers and give them the best experience while surfing the blog.

      Thanks for your comment Ron!

    Hi Lee,You have discussed some very good points,I would like to share some more things.Technical things do matter why people land to your page,they try to comment and get irritated due to some tech problem and leaves your page.But one more important thing is what makes you to comment on your post.Basically it is is the content part.How interesting and updated is your content,what message you are trying to convey to your readers,Are you asking a question,suggestions,tips etc.I want to say that basically it is the content part what you are trying to say to your visitors.what they want and what you are delivering.

    • (November 10, 2010 at 5:31 am) | Permalink

      @Adam,
      I agree with you Adam. Sometimes you’ll receive emails which ask a question, you may answer the question in a blog post, that way you’ll get the people to take part in the conversation. When it comes to content, you may try to make the post as simple as you can, then ask a simple question at the end of the post, for sure you’ll receive more comments on that post.

      Thanks for your comment Adam!

    Thanks so much for this post Lee. I have been doing these things for sometimes now and I will have to rethink my strategy, many of these 7 points have I not take so hard on and I must write more quality instead of quantity of posts. I must also take more time on the comments and to give better comments back, thanks again.

    • (November 10, 2010 at 5:36 am) | Permalink

      @Property Marbella,
      Quality of post is beyond quantity, but be sure you write a quality post with simple sentences which people can understand easily, then only they can leave a comment easily. Do ever try to show off your profession with complicated sentences, it will not only bored your readers, it will drive them off as well.

      Keep commenting on other blogs and reply comments on your blog, you’ll see some improvement in some days.

      Thanks for your comment. :)

    I really like the reasons provided in this blog, and it’s great that you also touched on ways to get more comments.

    Another way to get more comments, is to participate in a “Blog Challenge”, like the Ultimate Blog Challenge that just finished in October. These kind of challenges create a connection between the bloggers, where they each support each other and leave comments on each others blogs. This can really get the conversation going.

    Bloggers just need to understand that “blogging” is a form of “social” media. It is not the same as formal writing. It is much more engaging, and the comments section is the best part of blogging. I really liked what you said – you need to leave comments on other blogs to get comments on yours – - – and this is true! This is blogging karma.

    Also blogs that use the Commentluv plugin can be helpful too, as it provides a link to your last post on your blog, and other commenters can see this.
