Gone were the days when the internet was merely for googling and gaming. On the outset of the 21st century, more and more companies opted to do business online, thus creating alternative home-based jobs to worn-out office workers and freelancers. The wide array of opportunities include – among the more popular ones – data entry, medical transcription, SEO web copywriting, blogging and typing. Even techno geeks can carry out programming, web development and other online jobs for a multitude of clients all around the world. Indeed, the World Wide Web has reinvented traditional employment to a money making strategy less the hassle.

Nonetheless, it is important to remember that however easy, online jobs require above average to excellent intercultural communication skills as clients are of varied races. Such implies that a person bracing to work online has to have focus more than anything else. Other than that, she must demonstrate a mastery of the English language, must be knowledgeable on both Eastern and Western cultures (and everything in between), hardworking, and has a passion for learning.

If you think you’re fit enough to take the challenge of an online career, follow the helpful tips below to jumpstart and get the most out of your home-based gigs.

1. Establishing a regular working schedule is helpful to a start-up online employee. Having regularly scheduled working hours means avoiding the pitfall of working very long hours. Unlike regular office workers who get a clear signal to end a work day, most home-based employees have difficulty in ending a day’s job.

2. Setting up a neat and functional workspace in the house which contains all the tools and equipment needed to perform your job is also necessary. You may choose to work in the living room or in your own room; just make sure the workspace is aesthetically good and conducive to working.

3. Other activities might hamper the effectiveness of your outputs as they might be in conflict with your work schedule. It is therefore important to maintain a balance between work and leisure by avoiding so many activities. Time management is one of the keys to a successful online career; thus, discipline is highly essential.

4. Some moms have difficulty in attending to their children’s needs while fulfilling their job responsibilities. If you’re a work-at-home mom, consider hiring a nanny or babysitter to look after your kids while you work.

5. Keeping a professional attitude over work is also necessary for an online employee. Your house may be an informal setting for work, but client inquiries and requests must be handled and responded to in a professional way. Keep your conversations business-like to avoid doubts on the part of the employer.

These are personal pointers that have helped me do my job well as an online worker. You may find more guides and ideas on the net, but the most important thing to remember is that online jobs deserve the same dedication and attention as regular office jobs. Following these pointers will help become a more practical and productive online worker.

I decided it would be an amazing idea to start a new competition here in the blog engage community.

Our members will love this one because we will have many opportunities for you all to win throughout the entire year.

Every month I will be taking the article with the most votes and awarding them with an award. As always my articles will not be considered in the contest. This is only for our members.

The individual that has the most votes on their article at the end of each month will be awarded 40 USD paid via paypal.

This is just another way of me saying thanks to our community for supporting us over the past two years. The contest actually starts today and the first award will be given out for the month of May. That’s right I’m not a lamer this is going to start happening right now and not next month.

In order to compete in the competition you have to follow the guidelines.

  • Have a blog engage image on your blog sidebar
  • Written and submitted the article to blog engage
  • Be an active member within our community
  • Write about winning and how blog engage has helped you as a blogger

If you fall under these guidelines then you will be eligible for the awards presented to our members at the end each month.

What happens if there is a tie?

If for any reason we have a tie we will hold a poll in the blog forum and the winner of that poll will be the top engaged on the month. The poll will have all the tied blogs for that specific month. We will request our members vote for the one they want to see win.

How do we keep track of this contest?

Keeping track of the top article on the month is actually pretty easy. On both the published and upcoming page blog engage has tab links that show, week, month, year and all. This will show you all the popular articles in the blog engage community.

If anyone has any questions please post below in the comments section.

Hello my name is Casey and I am new here and am introducing my Forex Advice blog, on the Blog Engage network. I first of all want to thank Brian for such a great blogging community he has created. It is obvious he has put a lot of time and hard work to create such a thriving website. I also want to reach out to other bloggers here and begin to develop some long term blogging relationships.

My niche is Forex Trading and you may be asking what is forex trading? Forex Trading is online currency trading, just like the stock market. However it doesn’t matter that my niche is not related to other blogs in this community because blogging is the same no matter what niche you are in. I have developed some good skills about how to blog and am more than happy to share those tips and tricks that I have learned.

One of the things I have learned is that it helps to have a dedicated team and friends to help along the way. So that is why I am here at Blog Engage to help others and to learn. I won’t lie, I am also here be cause of SEO and the links that can be developed here. I hope I won’t get in trouble for mentioning that :)

One thing I will share to get started is don’t take shortcuts in your site to achieve short term results. Take the time to do things the right way and in the end you will reap the fruits of you labor. It may take time but in the end you won’t regret it. I am sure Brian the creator can testify to that as being true. Any other blogger that has achieved success will testify that blogging is a long term endeavor.  Success  is acheived one post at a time, one comment at a time, and then it creates a loyal following over time. Al

Also the more you blog and the more you interact, your skills get better and better. Your posts become sharper and you truly become an expert and an authority in your niche. Ultimately that is the goal of any blogger to be the source that other bloggers go to to get information for their particular niche.

Once again I am happy to be involved in the community and I hope that I can offer some assistance for any new blogs or bloggers. Even if your site is not related to forex advice I still like to give advice related to blogging and building an online presence.

If your just joining our SEO Keyword Challenge it’s not to late to participate. This isn’t a Challenge that yields a winner this is a personal challenge for our members and a lesson to be learned about SEO and Keyword Marketing.

If you’re interested in catching up and following the challenge be sure to read the entire series.

Starting with Research and Analysis, moving to Article Creation, over to Building the Article and finally Publishing the Article.

In today’s article we will be discussing the importance of social bookmarking and how to do it properly ranking us as high as possible in Google and other Search Engines.

Similar to publishing your article the most important aspect to social bookmarking is creating relevant back links to your article.

Proper Category – Make sure the site has the proper category for you to submit your article. This is very important because any links going back to your article that are unrelated or not relevant is a waste of your time.

Proper Tags – Similar to what I said about your blog post you have to make sure you post relevant tags on your article. Please make note that you should change up your tags on every bookmark you make. So make sure they are all different and relevant. We want to avoid any type of duplicate content.

Unique Title – When submitting and book marketing your article make sure to use a unique but relevant title for you story. Do not copy and paste your information. Also ensue that every site you submit to is different. This is why I said do not be lazy make it count.

Unique Description – Similar to the title your description must be unique as well. Simply no copy and pasting your first paragraph. Make sure you sue simile and relevant keywords during this process but please do change it up for every bookmark you do.

What websites to use when bookmarking?

With web development becoming more and more available to almost every internet user and with the increasing number of platforms allowing virtually anyone to create his or her own website, it is expected that the competition for online traffic become tougher and tighter by the hour. With many businesses today basing their operations entirely on the internet, it should also come as no surprise if they do everything to make their page ranks higher to drive more visitors to their sites. This whole business of traffic-driving is called search engine optimization or SEO. The best thing about SEO is it creates so many online jobs that can be done from the comfort of one’s home.

One of these SEO jobs is link building. Basically, it is the creation of links in other websites that lead to the website being optimized. That may be quite a too simplistic definition but it explains in the simplest terms how link building is done.

Searching for link building freelance opportunities, I stumbled upon the following job post, which I found quite funny.

“I want as many as possible links to my site. I only need to be ‘famous’ for 10 days. After that, it doesn’t matter if I’m blacklisted or whatever. I need to be No 1 on Google on the 15th of May. Absolutely, positively. If I am toast by the end of May, doesn’t matter. So I want porn links, link farms, blog spam. Everything! I MUST be No. 1 on the 15th of May for at least 24 hours. Bid a low to win. If I am no. 1 on 15/05/10, I WILL pay $600 U.S. dollars as a bonus. Guaranteed. My regular employee rating is 9.985. I’m sorry, but I am undercover for this one as it is flying under the radar.”

This job ad was created on April 20 the same year. I found it funny because the buyer seems to be really desperate to rank number on Google’s search results in such a short time. And the poster even had a specific target date for it! Whose curiosity wouldn’t be piqued by that? What kind of site could it be?

Well, I never found out because I didn’t even think of applying for it. Obviously, the buyer was looking for a link building team. An individual couldn’t possibly deliver the results the buyer wants in a very short period of time. But even with a team of link builders, they would have to have a really, really good strategy to give the buyer’s website the highest possible page rank even for just a day.

Doing link building for search rankings is quite easy. You just need to post links in forums, comment threads, online site directories, blogs, etc. But getting good results, i.e. a boost in page ranking, isn’t as easy. Therefore, the practice of link building should be done with quality in mind. When we say link quality, we are talking of how creative links are.

Link building freelancers should be able to make their forum and blog posts more engaging and more credible-sounding so other people won’t think of them as mere spammers promoting their websites.

You’ve probably spent a huge amount of time working on search engine optimization to produce quality and compelling content, include targeted keywords on each page, get incoming links but never once spared a thought for generating a sitemap in your SEO campaign.

HTML Sitemap

In general, HTML Sitemaps can be very handy for your human visitors, and it’s a nice additional way to help search engines make sure that they know about all of your pages as well.

XML Sitemap

It’s always a good idea for your XML Sitemap file to include all pages which you want to have indexed. If you have pages such as tag or archive pages which you prefer not to have indexed, it’s recommended to add a “no index” robots meta tag to the pages (and of course, not to include them in the Sitemap file).

If your CMS or website doesn’t allow you to generate XML Sitemaps, there are lots of tools available online and here’s one of them

Win/win Situation

This is a win-win situation for you, your website visitors and the search engines. Put simply you’re nuts if you’ve not included a sitemap as part of your overall website promotion strategy.

The good news is that it’s never too late to start. You can create a sitemap page today but there are some rules to creating an effective sitemap that you need to follow.

General Guidelines for URLs in XML Sitemaps

  • A Sitemap can contain a list of URLs or a list of Sitemaps.
  • A Sitemap file can contain no more than 50,000 URLs and be no larger than 10MB when uncompressed. If your Sitemap is larger than this, break it into several smaller Sitemaps.
  • Specify all URLs using the same syntax. For instance, if you specify your site location as http://www.example.com/, your URL list should not contain URLs that begin with http://example.com/. And if you specify your site location as http://example.com/, your URL list should not contain URLs that begin with http://www.example.com/.
  • Do not include session IDs in URLs.
  • Do not include direct image URLs in Sitemaps.
  • The Sitemap URL must be encoded for readability by the webserver on which it is located.

More information can be found at Google Webmaster Central.
