Comments are a very important part of your blog.

Without comments, your blog would be so quiet until we can hear the crickets chirping.

*Chirp. Chirp*

*Chirp*

So, lets get rid of the chirping and build a good community, a good readership!

If you’ve got a good number of comments, it will make a good impression on your readers and your blog will be full of life. Yay!

So, here are some sure-fire ways that will get you more comments! =)

1. Network and make lots of friends

Networking is the key to getting more comments, which is one of the keys to building a successful blog.

Blogger friends like to help each other and comment on each other’s blogs.

Twitter is the easiest way to make friends with bloggers and other social media guys. I use Twitter and I have made a lot of friends there.

You can start a relationship by retweeting a tweep’s blog post, thanking the people who have retweeted you, and greeting them. :)

2. Comment a lot on other blogs

As the famous saying goes, “Give and you will receive.”

To get comments, you have to give comments.

When you make comments on other blogs, most bloggers will reciprocate and leave you a comment too.

It’s good to make it a habit to frequently comment on blog posts. When you comment on someone’s blog, you encourage them and brighten their day.  =)

A good start would be commenting on the blogs of the commentators of other blogs.

But, make sure you don’t make pointless, short, and unspecific comments like “Great post!” and all those. It sounds like spam and turns off people. Instead, write thoughtful comments.

And other than getting more comments, commenting on other blogs also helps you to build your brand on the Internet.

3. Reply to your commentators

When you reply to your commentators, they feel appreciated and happy because you care, and they are more likely to come back to your blog because of that.

It’s also a great way to build relationships with your readers.

When I started blogging, I didn’t reply to comments because I thought it wasn’t necessary.

But one day, I came across a blog post about the importance of replying to comments. So I started doing it, and I got to know my readers more personally and built many relationships! :)

This is one of the things I should have done when I started my blog!

4. Notify commentators of your reply using ReplyMe

I love the ReplyMe plugin! Thanks to Onibalusi for introducing this plugin to me. :)

When you start replying to comments, you should install this plugin. This plugin sends a notification email to the commentator when someone replies to his comment.

This allows the commentator to continue the conversation if he wants.

Also, I like blogs who have this plugin because I can know when a person replies to my comment without manually checking.

5. Reward your commentators: Install these great 3 plugins

One great way to encourage people to comment is to install these awesome wordpress plugins that reward your commentators.

Commentluv lets your readers leave a link to their latest blog post, giving them exposure and traffic.

Keywordluv lets your readers get backlinks – When you comment as yourname@keywords on a blog, it places a link to “keywords” instead of “yourname”. This helps you rank higher in search engines for your keyword.

Top Commentators puts a widget in your sidebar that displays your top commentators and also put a dofollow link to their blogs.

Do you know any other great comment-plugins?

6. Write a killer blog post

If you take time to write an impactful, well-crafted blog post, it will surely receive a lot more comments than usual.

The most common type of killer posts is mega list posts (like 16 Ways to Get More Blog Visitors, etc).

These kinds of blog posts also receive lots of traffic (which has a high chance of comments), and people tend to comment on killer posts too.

Besides getting more comments, writing an impactful blog post gets you more visitors, new readers, and subscribers, and helps to bring your blog to the next level. Yay!

7. Write a controversial blog post

Controversial blog posts get a lot of attention and comments.

Readers like to comment on these posts because they also want to express their opinion by disagreeing or agreeing.

For example, Ben Lang’s post on “10 Reasons Why Twitter is Bound to Fail” has received over 70 comments; and they’re not just simple comments, but quality comments!

Though, if you do want to write a controversial blog post, please remember to be respectful :) .

8. Write with more personality and style

You must write with personality and style, whether you’re writing a killer post or a controversial post!

Make sure you write passionately and expressively; be who you are.

In other words, don’t write like a robot or Wikipedia, which have no personality.

When a reader makes a comment, they are talking to you. But if you write like a robot, then you better express yourself. No reader likes talking to a robot.

Your readers want to talk to you. So, if you haven’t, write with more personality! And style! :)

9. Talk to your readers in your post

Don’t write as if there is no one reading your posts! Talk to your readers in your posts. Frequently use the word ”you” in your blog post.

You could also drop in questions like “What do you think?”, “Would you have done this?”, “…right?”, “Any advice?”, “What’s your experience?”, “Do you have more tips?” etc.

When you talk to your readers, they are more likely to answer. That’s logic.

10. Write a post to get to know your readers

When Daniel Scocco from DailyBlogTips wanted to get to know his readers, he made a blog post titled “Dear Reader, Who Are You?”. That blog post got 240 comments!

And when Chris Brogan wanted to get to know his readers, he wrote “Your First Comment on This Blog”, and that post has got over 1000 comments! Wow!

Maybe you should also write a post that lets your readers introduce themselves. Your readers like you to get to know them more personally.

11. Write a blog post just to ask questions

You could write a blog post just to ask your readers for answers through their comments.

A blog needs to have question posts once in a while. This tells your readers that you appreciate their opinions. It also fires up participation and community.

For example, Problogger’s question post titled Free WordPress Plugins – What are Your Favourites? got more than 150 comments!

You could also feature some of the best comments in your next post too!

By the way, here are some great tips for writing question posts.

12. Make commenting simple and easy

If you make commenting complicated, your readers are most probably not going to comment. So, make commenting easy breezy!

Get rid of all those mind-boggling captchas. And make sure you don’t make readers log in or register to comment.

Although doing this may cause more spam comments that you have to moderate, it’s a thing you should do to show your readers that you care, and your readers will come back again.

13. Hold a blog commenting competition

Another great way to get more comments is hold a contest (you can give away prizes like premium themes, ebooks, or cash) and make commenting a requirement.

One type of blog commenting contests is the “Top Commentator” contest; the commentator who has commentated the most in the contest period wins the prize.

Besides getting more comments, competitions are a great way to attract new readers to your blog too!

14. Comment on your commentator’s blogs

In life, we must always give more than we receive!

So when people comment on our blogs, we should return their favor and also leave a comment or two on their blog.

This helps you to build relationship with the blogger. You would probably become frequent commentators of each other’s blogs too!

15. Just ask!

If all else fails, just ask for comments! :)

This would help if you have just started a new blog and need comments.

Don’t be impolite when asking for comments though. Always remember to be polite and respectful when asking for comments.

And as the old saying goes, ask and you will receive!

___________

There! I hope you’ve enjoyed my blog post! =)

I hope you could also share your tips on how to get more comments in the comments below. I’ll really appreciate it! :)

    Gloson!

I finally read your post, love it!

It is obvious to get more commenters, you should make your blog dofollow.

I prefer to set my blog nofollow, so i can see who really wants to comment and who wants to spread links.

I honestly love to comments in dofollow blogs to spread links, but it doesn’t mean i comment to all blogs which have commentluv enabled, i don’t comments in low quality autoblog, for example.

Plus, i prefer having quality comments than, just “thanks for sharing” “great post, thanks” comments.

I hate those short comments which are obviously intended to spread “SEO” links.

Thanks for your awesome tips, young man :D

Hey Kimi! Thanks so much for the great comment!

I use the NOFF No Follow Free plugin for selective do-following.\

Yeah, I agree with you. I don’t like to comment on autoblogs too. Simply because they are robots :) .

And yeah, two-liner comments are too general and are usually submitted by spammer robots.

Thanks so much! I’m glad you like my post! =)

HI Gloson, what a well thought out piece. I think you’ve covered this topic very well.

My personal observation is that once you get the first one or two comments on a posts those comments attract more comments. So if I could piggy back off of one of your points the key is in writing posts in a way that is so genuine that to the reader it sounds as if you are talking to them and them alone.

    Hi Gloson!
All-in-all, another great post by the blogging protege, as the other commentators have all noted.
I will, however, in the spirit of improving our skills and learning from each other, say that blogging demands attention and focus. That is especially important when working on a long post. If we don’t pay attention to what we write, we might find ourselves repeating the same point: as you’ve done here, my man.
Points #2 and #14 are restatements of the same.
Other than that – great tips!

Thanks for the great comment! :)

I read that blog post about 7 times before I submitted it. Hmmm… yes, although those two points may seem overlapping, they actually have different results.

If you do point #2, you will receive a bunch of comments from different bloggers, most probably only for once.

But when you do point #14, you make good friends with the blogger and he will be a loyal commentator of your blog. :)

Thanks again Dan. I’m glad you like my post! =)

    Hi Gloson,

This is really a good article about how you can boost comments. Another thing that also encourage your comment is to make a commenting group or club that will syndicate your commenting routine.

This way, your new readers will encourage to comment on your post because there are already many people who talks about it. You can also do a comment by yourself.

Anyway, I thought of this technique before but this technique was also prove by John Chow’s Commenting Technique ebook. And this is really awesome book.

In my own experience, you can also comment on other niche’s blogs because the author of those blog will prioritized to comment back because of what you did into their blog.

Still, great content is still a great factor to gather more comment into your blog. I hope this post will get more comments.

    Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Gera!

Thank you so much Gera! Yeah, I always do my best to find pictures for my blog posts. I’d say they are like the seasoning for a blog post :)

And thank you very much for featuring my post in your weekly roundup! I really appreciate it! =)

      Cheers!

You are practicing what you preach, and I can definitely say your tips are most relevant and useful. For example, you always take the trouble to respond to the comments that you receive, and you do it in a most polite and sincere manner. I think people visiting your blog enjoy the stuff that is posted here.
By the way, your article on “confusing confusion” of the English Language, how do we know that you are not misleading us? I suggest that you provide a bibliography so that your readers know the source of your references. I mean no offence. In fact, I am most appreciative that you have come up with this article that is concise and useful to all learners of English in Malaysia.
May I have your permission to send this article to the Malaysian Text Book Bureau and ask them to include this in all the English Teaching textbooks! Of course, they must pay you a copyright fee!

Gaining friends is the best part of blogging. And this will all start by creating quality articles posted in your blog. When you create one, a lot will give good comments. Gaining friends and good comments is the most rewarding part of blogging.

Wow, I’m really impressed with this article. I have a blog to promote my t-shirt designs and it gets fair traffic but it seems that comments are rare so this article really makes me think that I need to be more personally involved in it and to try to build relationships through it. I’ve written the tips you shared down and look forward to applying each one.

    Thanks for a wonderful post!

What a brilliant post. You should do a series! :) I did a sort of blogging for dummies over
on one of the craft forums and I thought it was too simple for them, but the amount of
emails I got asking questions just like what you addressed was unbelievable. As young
people today we have grown up with computers, but it’s easy to forget that even people
just a few years older have not! Really good post! :)

My own observation is the fact that when you get the first or two comments on the posts individuals comments get more comments. Therefore if I possibly could back away of your points the bottom line is on paper posts in ways that’s so genuine that towards the readers it may sound just like you are speaking for them and them alone. Great posting!!!

This post is most helpful. I have been struggling to get more readers involved and commenting on my posts, not just reading them and clicking away. I can count a least 6-7 things from your list that I haven’t been utilizing. Thanks for the great info and keep up the excellent work. Be well.
